QDX: CAT not working in WSJT-X
Keith (KO4SWB)
My QDX showed up earlier today, and I'm trying to get CAT working on WSJT-X. Unfortunately, I'm having no luck following the 1_08 firmware operating manual. Here are the settings and error message.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? |

Three things I see in your screen shots: - If you have Wsjtx 2.6.1 then select the QRPLabs QCX/QDX as the rig. Otherwise select the Kenwood TS-480. It is what the QDX in reality emulates. - Set Database, Stop Bits and Handshake all to Default. - Set Mode to USB and Split to Rig. Split is not so important, but the QDX sill do the split just fine so you might as well use it unless you have a reason you don't want to. Mode MUST be USB AFAIK. Then test CAT by clicking on the test button - should turn Green. The PTT should turn Red until you turn it off. If both those work you have rig control. 73, Cliff, AE5ZA

Thanks for the response, Cliff.
Tried your suggestions, but no dice, Still isn't working, Keith |

Keith - while I'm not using Windows (my computer is a Mac mini), the controls are mostly the same. Note that you have a COM port to point to; I have the Unix-type name of the device. Are you SURE your QDX is connected to COM13? Here is a screen shot from my setup that I just verified that works, with my QSO with KW7E...

Sorry the image is so small. Let me know if it is not readable.

I can see it just fine, Jim. Thanks. Will let you know how it goes once I've had a chance to try tomorrow.

Hmmm.... Strange. That is exactly my setup except not on Windows. Are you sure Com13 is the correct serial port?

That's definitely the right COM port. Verified it by unplugging the USB cable.

Tried it with your suggestions, Jim. Also downloaded the latest version of WJST-X with the QDX among the rig options. Still no dice.

Have you tried rebooting the PC? Something strange is going on in your system, but it should just work. Maybe an updated driver? 73, Cliff, AE5ZA

Cliff,
The PC's been rebooted at least twice since the radio arrived on Monday. It certainly wouldn't hurt to update drivers, but it's working on my X6100 and FT-710 just fine. Well, fine-ish. The 710 can be pretty fiddly. A couple times the radio's lost power while using FT8, and I've had to putz around in the software to get it working again afterwards. Still, it eventually works. Sink |

Well, not sure where to go from here. If you have a buddy close to you maybe trying running it on his system. Something to draw the line between a rig problem or a system problem. To me I'm beginning to think there maybe a rig problem. I don't remember if you have reset the rig in all this process. Just grasping at straws right now.

A rig reset certainly wouldn't hurt. I can also try using my home PC to see if it behaves any differently.
I'll let you know how I make out. |

Are you able to connect to the QDX with Putty or Hyperterm and access the Terminal applications menu?

Keith (KO4SWB)
Tried it with Putty earlier today. Didn't work, but I won't assume that was necessarily the radio's fault since that was my first attempt to use such a program since Telnet in the pre-WWW days.

When you selected serial mode did you change the port to 13?
I think it defaults to 0 |
|
Keith (KO4SWB)
I did. Afterwards I followed the instructions to press Enter in the terminal window once connected, but the home screen did not load.
Also tried it on a different PC with the same results. |

Cliff
When you selected Open in Putty do I understand correctly that a blank terminal window came up and when you hit Enter it did not show the menu screen? If so you have serious issues with the QDX.

This unit came as prebuilt, correct? What voltage is the QDX built for? What voltage are you supplying to the QDX? 73, Cliff, AE5ZA

One more thing to try. Download the latest firmware, 1_09 from https://qrp-labs.com/images/qdx/firmware/1_09.zip In the Operating Manual for Firmware 1.08 follow the procedure to update the firmware with 1_09. Does that work as described? If so now try Putty. 73, Cliff, AE5ZA
