Hi Dan

We were originally told they were dishwasher safe. After it became clear that fading could occur I added a note to the shop page that it should be washed by hand. And we exchanged some harsh words with the local producer here. He started supplying mugs which he claims are printed with a more permanent method. True? I have no idea. But I haven't heard of any problems on the new ones.

At least my mugs had a quick death, rather than gradually slipping away with each trip through the dishwasher. Fedex broke my first one and Hans immediately sent another, which survived the trip. Then I managed to break the replacement the SECOND TIME I used it.

The universe is trying to tell me something...no QRP-Labs mug for me. ☕😔 I did manage to glue the first one back together and have repurposed it as a pen/pencil jar in my shack.

Hi Lars

Glad to hear the 2nd one survived the trip though not it's premature fate. At least you got a second use from the 1st, good idea!

FYI I remember telling you I'd out in a compensation claim at FedEx. Since this was the first time I'd heard of, that a mug was broken in transit, it appears to me to indicate that my colleagues here to a good enough job of wrapping them up safely enough. Well eventually I had a somewhat irritatingly worded ruling from the FedEx overlords, to the effect that they bear no responsibility at all for the breakage in transit of delicate breakable items therefore I'm entitled to nothing at all. Which does beg the question where you draw the line on what's breakable or not. Anything is, with enough force. (Possible exception, my obstinate determination to keep going despite the universe being against me most of the time). FedEx have proven this themselves several times. I do recall one occasion a QCX-mini enclosure was literally flattened like a pancake. You've probably seen how sturdy they are. I don't think running over it with a truck would be sufficient, you'd need a freight train. Come to think of it now... I never heard back from FedEx on that claim...

Hopefully the attached video survived the trip, since Fedex was not involved in it's delivery. I checked my cameras for the day of delivery, this clip shows the driver reaching up high to drop the package as hard as possible to the concrete below, complete with a sickening thud when it lands. I'd have sent it earlier but I couldn't imagine Fedex rejecting your claim. Wish I had.

Meanwhile, I continue to enjoy my QRP-Labs pencil holder.

Lars,

I don't consider it a death- the fade is a feature!

On FedEx, they once left a package right in front of my garage door- just where I couldn't see it. I ended up backing over the package! Fortunately the contents were 'bulletproof' and no damage to the contents.

Hi Lars

Thanks, certainly the video gave me a good chuckle! It looks like he is stretching up to place it somewhere, do you have a shelf or something up there? But yes it appears there is a tell-tale thud...

Just for the laugh, I shall send that to FedEx as a reply to their "claim rejected" email. But I'll bet you TWO beautifully-wrapped coffee mugs including reliable secure shipping (FedEx) that it doesn't make a shred of difference to my claim :-D

I wish Hans and others would sell a thick mug like the military mugs my son brought home from each ship or occasionally an old fashioned restaurant has.  Once they get hot the coffee stays warm for quite a while (I put hot water in the cup first).  Those new stainless steel mugs just don’t work as well, not even a $30 YETI. I would buy one then as those (the thick military ones, NOT the YETI.) are my favorite mugs. They’re all made in China as far as I can see from their labels, even the US Military ones. But they are indestructible except one I had for years.  Heating it in the microwave caused fine cracks over 20 years and it eventually started leaking.  Ha!

An old ham like me has favorites and hot coffee in the morning is one of them.  I tell McDonalds if the coffee doesn’t burn the first layer off my mouth it isn’t hot enough.  And if you really want to get my ire up (even in a restaurant) you NEVER put good hot coffee in a cold cup. No tip if in a restaurant.  The local waitresses know me and love my generous tipping so they listen to this old ham.  In fact our local ham club is noted for its high tipping and they take good care of us. We go to one particular restaurant (J&S Airport) because they keep a cooler filled with free meals for the young and underprivileged in Traverse City. They have passed out over 100,000 meals since they started when they bought out the restaurant and Covid started.  And their free meal tipping jar is always full at the cash register….  The meal cooler outside is open 24/7/365.  Free meal in a sack to anyone in need.

Check out Traverse City, Michigan on your way north in Michigan… a great town to live and work in (or retire in).  And a great ham club, Cherryland Amateur Radio Club.

Hi Dave

How thick are those military mugs, I wonder?

QRP Labs ones aren't stainless steel... I just measured a QRP Labs wall thickness with my micrometer, it's about 5.5mm (just under 1/4-inch).

I am not home now (traveling back from Florida) but I have one sitting beside me and it eyeballs at a little thicker than 1/4” and this is a mug from a well known Florida watering hole, the Metro.  The military ones are slightly thicker. Thicker is better and I pay more for that.  And if the logo is painted on before the final glazing it will be dishwater proof.  This one has the logo painted on top of the glazing but it is thick paint and has been through the dishwasher many times in the 5 years I have had it. They used to sell at $5.00 but I would pay much more for thick ham radio mugs.  My kids like to have a list of my requested radio stuff for birthdays and Christmas.

The ARRL mugs and other radio mugs friends have given me are pen holders as they are no different from the standard coffee mugs most places use. And I like the feel of a thick hefty mug, reminds me of what is left of my “manhood” at age 78….. ha!

Will be home soon and will measure a couple of my mugs and let you know after all the unpacking is done….

I've had this one for about 15 years. It keeps the coffee (and tea) warm for several hours. Better than the Yeti I think. And a little less spillable. The guys in my lab where I worked bought me a Tommy Tippee cup once for Christmas.

I agree with Dave. I like thick mugs. Both of these the wall thickness is 1/4 inch. Maybe a little more on the bigger one. The little one is an old diner mug the big one is from the old Car Talk radio show.

One place you might find a thick mug is here. They're making a replica of the old watch mug. Look at the price.

But then look at what originals cost on ebay.

We are back home in Michigan now and here are the promised thickness dimensions of the favorite military mugs that my son provided to me while he was in the navy.

0.325 " or 8.6 mm side wall thickness
3.52 " diameter at the top
3.85" high

Made by Mil-Art China    www.Milart.com

My military mugs hold about 9 oz liquid.

Most of the less expensive mugs and ones offered by the various ham radio groups are much thinner walled.  My ARRL 2018 Field Day mug is

0.21" thick at the top
3.30" diameter
3.86" high

The above is about right for all the mugs we have that I don't use.  I like the thicker mugs as once I get them hot and then add the hot coffee the coffee stays hot to warm for a much longer time.

That is why I would pay more for ham radio mugs if they were thicker like the military mugs.

I am the exception here.  I don't like HOT coffee or pretty much anything HOT.  I like iced coffee and cold brew, but when I drink hot, I put some ice cubes (oh many I can HEAR your eyes rolling all the way in TX!) to cool it down.  I may get some dredemtion for my mug.  I prefer a German style ceramic .5 liter mug... Were I to heat it and put hot coffee, I am sure it would keep it hot fairly long...  Hard to measure the thickness due to a rouded upper edge but it looks to be about 13mm thick!
