Excuse the brain fog, but...

Mel Snyder

…I totally forgotten how to enter and save messages into my QCX-Minis.

Please don’t suggest I “red the manual” because I have it open in front of me — and still can’t figure it out. I did it successfully for my 20 meter mini more than a month ago. Now I can’t for my 30 and 40 meter minis.

When I have the decoder enabled, and the display reads “2.3 Message 1” — how do I actually enter the text of the message I want into memory 1?

I have the paddles plugged in, and have tried keying very short messages. But no characters show up on the screen as I do, and when I exit via “save settings” the memory bank is empty.

When you’re 80 years, you’ll possibly develop embarrassing brain fog like I have.

Mel,

I use the menus 2.3 thru 2.14 to enter the memories. I don't use the
paddles to enter the memories. Instead, use the select button and
rotary knob.

Using the operating manual found here:
https://www.qrp-labs.com/images/qcxp/firmware/1.08/OpMan108.pdf

Start in section 4.9 for entering keyer memories. You may need to
refer to section 4.7 to refresh what options are available on the
rotary knob during text entry.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Mike. I really love “your” 20 meter Mini.

I think I programmed the message memories in the 20 meter mini using my paddles — which I cannot seem to recall how I did it. I saw that character-by-character method, but I was trying to do it as I thought I recalled it.

BTW — my 30 meter mini is +1.5KHz off and my 40 mini is +0.9 KHz off. Dare I try to move them? — and how might I do that without risking making 2 bricks?

Thanks again! The 20 meter mini is AWESOME! It’s less than 3db below my KX3 at 15 watts most days. And today, I worked a POTA station just 0.3KHz away from a really strong other POTA station — and while a 559 isn’t a rock-crushing report, the station ),3 KHz was a solid S9.

  1. 2)  Key in the desired text on the straight Morse key on the board, or using your external paddle. The CW decoder must be enabled for menu editing (see “Enable edit” parameter).

Mel,

Glad you like the 20m mini. I'm down to a 40m myself. Pondering on
getting a 20m to pair with it.

Hmmm, then make sure that menu "5.6 Enable Edit: enable CW decoding
during menu editing (useful!)" is enabled?

Mel.  I guess you are not using the TCXO option, otherwise you'd be much closer on frequency.  You need to adjust the 27MHz reference frequency using a terminal program to connect to the QCX.  The manual tells you how to do that.  I use the "Putty" terminal program which is simple to set up and use.  You would be hard pushed to "brick" a QCX doing this - just make a note of the starting frequency of the 27MHz crystal so you can go back to it if necessary.  The amount you need to shift the reference depends on how far off you are and what band you are operating on.  If you are 1kHz off on 10MHz, it means you are 2.7kHz off at 27MHz - it's in proportion.

Actually the Reference frequency is accessed via menu item 8.5 on the QCX. There is no USB connector on a QCX. I think you’re confusing it with a QDX. Use the left button to move to the digit to change and turn the rotary control to change it. 73….Ron

Ron. You are quite correct.  I was mixing up QDX and QCX.  But I do remember you could change the ref frequency appropriately.  Been a while since I did that though on a QCX!
