Debugging QDX: No Receiver Audio #qdx

Doug Kaye (K6DRK)

Making progress on my QDX. I'm not getting any receiver audio output. In terminal mode, I can get audio when I run the audio sweep, RF sweep and image tests. I can configure WSJT-X (Mac OS) and Test CAT is successful. Obviously, for the receiver to generate output, all sorts of things have to be working properly, but I'm not sure what to test next. Any tips?

If it passes the tests then I'd be looking at the USB/computer interface.
You do not say why you think there is no audio? Nothing on WSJT-X?
Sorry no MAC experience here.

Thanks, Alan. I can hear (and see) the audio coming from the QDX without using WSJT-X. That is how I know I'm getting audio from the sweep tests. But in receive mode, there's no audio output. Since I do get audio from the sweeps, I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with the USB interface.

Doug,

Right, you hear just noise?
If the tests show good (and you hear the audio from those tests) then the only thing is C2 and the antenna connector.
Make sure it is soldered and no shorts to ground.
The test signal is introduced at the inner end of C2 so we'd expect some reception if an antenna is connected when a band is open.

Doug,

The default audio level in the QDX is about 50% so you may not hear it. You can boost the audio level through Putty and the config settings. Also the recent alpha versions of the software flrig will give you an interface that will enable you to adjust the audio level on the fly as needed.

Thanks, Cliff. That helped. I now can hear the audio from the QDX receiver. But connected to a good antenna, I don't hear any FT8 or other tones on any band. Just low-level static. And I'm sure there must be activity on at least one band! On 21.074MHz I do hear a tone about 2230Hz. (Thanks for the advice, oh2awg, Esa N.)

More hardware debugging required!

Doug,

Silly question did you try another USB Cable?

Terry

Doug Kaye (K6DRK)

Hi, Terry. Yes, Ive used different USB cables. At this point I managed to get audio from the QDX to WSJT-X. Now the problem is trying to receive a signal more than just the noise.

I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago and it turned out reflowing all the enameled wire solder joints fixed it. The antenna wasn't connected to the receiver!
