Jack,
Keep in touch. My fishing boat belongs to my son. I bought it for him when he was 16 instead of a car. But I still keep and maintain it. My wife keeps wanting me to give it back to my son and get rid of it because of disuse. So you and another ham friend may help me keep it here in Traverse City. There are no lakes to speak of in Illinois where my son lives…. The boat would just sit in a storage garage…. So let’s use it.

I've been to Traverse City, MI...beautiful country. The bad news: I love to fish! I used to have a cabin on a lake about 25 miles north of North Bay, Ont:
It took me and my father-in-law 3 summers to build back in the '80's when I was teaching. (I'm standing on the dock for this picture.) Excluding the septic system which had to be put in by a licensed contractor, it cost me $6700 to build. We had a saw mill about 10 miles away, so materials cost were just above free. Deliveries were free, as one of the workers lived on the same lake and would just take a company truck home with my order.
I really miss the place and just take you up on your offer!!

Jack,
I live on a 600 acre lake and have thought of doing that many times using my 15’ fishing boat. It hardly gets used any more. In fact I spend more time cleaning it than I do fishing in it. Might get me out on the lake more. If anyone want to fish on Silver Lake in Grand Traverse County give me a call next summer. I’m always looking for a fishing partner. My wife is not a fisherwoman……
Dave K8WPE David J. Wilcox’s iPad All:
On my web site I asked the question: "Does a group for Lakes On The Air (LOTA) exist?" I got some cute answers, but none that answered what was meant to be a serious question. If it does not exist, I wonder why. With all of the "...OTA's" out these, why not? There would have to be some rules (e.g., the lake must be 100 acres or more, you must operate 50' or less from the water's edge, etc.), but it seems doable. The lake's ID might be its maiden head coordinates. It could be another way to get some hams active again and maybe even draw some new ones in. (If you do a POTA, take a small sign the says something like: "Ham radio in action!". People are interested.)
