CQWWX Contes

I took out my QCXes into that contest. QCX multiband and QCX+160 m so 4 to 5 W out. Missed something for 10 m. Antennas GP on 20 m, EFHW 41 m and Inverted L on 160 (vertical for 10 rest sloping and not straight.)

699 QSOs US on 15,20 and 40, JA, Thailand, some Caribbean islands Brasil and all over EU. No US westcoast.

I was off the rig for some 15 h  ( I need my sleep and had to watch Germany Spain soccer) and my best hour was around 35 QSOs. Using N1MM and mostly operated with the keyboard. Run mode did not rally work, the bans were too crowded, my signal too weak and impossible to keep the QRG. So mostly "search and pounce"
160 worked surprisingly well and overall I did get a few new counties for my target to get an all QCX DXCC.

Have there been any other QCXes ?

Hi Martin

699 QSOs is pretty good :-)

I had very limited time but managed 111 QSOs with my 20m QCX+
Mainly Europe of course but quite a few USA and a few into Asia
30 countries and 9 zones in the log
Aerial is a EFHW just 5m high

All of mine were 'search and pounce'. I use the excellent N3FJP logging software.

Thanks for your report. I ran CQWW using a 20m QCX,
a 40m QCX and an MTR5B for 15m. Ended with
150 Qs for the two QCX rigs and 150 for the
MTR5B. Ant was an 80-10m EFHW up about
35 feet configured as a horizontal L. My QTH is
South Florida about 7 miles from the Atlantic.

Worked stations as far away as Japan, the tip of
Chile, Greece and Moscow. Although these rigs
performed well, I would not use them again in
such a major contest. Of course this is not
their main purpose. But it does show their
utility and flexibility.

My unofficial score was about 130,000 for about
24 hours op time. Fun and exhausting.

Anyone else?

You guys are all having too much fyn.  I ran my QCX-minis on 20m and 40m into an indoor zig zag 20m dipole.  I only managed 4 qso's on each band and gave up after the complete mash that existed on 40!  73 de K9TR

I had a blast running my QCX-mini on 21Mhz. I participated only for 9 hours and with 4W output connected to a piece of wire (EndFed) I managed to complete 121 QSOs, mostly DX (to include 3B8M, LP1H, XE2X, V47T, V26K, PR2E, ZP5CO ...) and heard many, many other cool DX. I can just imagine a log with a directional antenna ...

My 15m QCX-mini rocks! It is becoming my favorite rig within my home-mode QRP arsenal (mcHF, OVI-40, uSDX, (tr)uSDX, QCX classic - for 20m)! It seems that I will soon reach my fourth QRP DXCC (so far I worked 141 countries from S5, 117 from PA (Maastricht), 102 from from K4 (Tampa, Florida) and progressing nicely in my current location in Belgium).

Kind regards

Hi Jim,

what did you miss most with your QCXes in the contest ? A sharper filter would have been nice and mine shows the other sideband for strong stations which inreases QRM and eventually makes me call on the wrong sideband. (Yes I did the alignment) Thats all I see at my level of skills. Actually the potential for a better result sits in front of the rig.  I am working on that using the morserunner software within N1MM.  Its hard to copy the calls of the quick ones. great relief in that contest is, that you only have to copy the zone nr. Especially in QRP it is sometimes difficult for the others to get my serial nr. right.

Martin: I mainly ran my QCX rigs in the CQWW CW because my KX3 was not available. Running the QCX rigs in a demanding contest like CQWW is a real challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. In my case, I had no rig control as I used a Macbook Pro and SkookumLogger for logging (btw, that’s a really neat program). As for filtering, the only time I missed it was Sunday evening on 40m, which was absolute bedlam. I just gave up trying and QSYd to 15&20. And I agree that better results are sitting right in front of the rig. I was very satisfied with my results. I think the only way I would have significantly boosted my score would be to have worked 80 & 10 meters. 10m was really jumping. For the most part I compete against myself although I do check to see how I fared against other SOAB QRP unassisted ops. Here is a shot of my operating position for this contest. That’s my MTR5B perched on my lap in this case for 15m. (Note my 3 QCX rigs partially obscured on the right.) So you can see how simple (primitive?) my setup was. The ergonomics were not great. But, again, when I think how well I did for a 24-hour effort with a very simple setup I feel proud.

Hi Jim,

not having the Cat Control is indded a disadvantage.WithN1MM and the function keys it is really comfortable. I am sometimes not quick enough on the keyboard and on reading callsigns. Some of them are dam quick.
