BS170 MOSFETS

Paul Christensen

Fairchild/OnSemi BS170 MOSFETs are back in stock at Mouser.  49,189 as of this morning.  I placed an order for 100 over the weekend and got a 50% price break over small quantities.  USPS First Class shipping for U.S. orders is only USD $3.49.  Unlike some Asian product, these are real BS170 MOSFETs with a managed chain-of-custody from time of manufacture to the point of sale.

Paul, how do you get the $3.49 shipping rate? Cheapest for me shows $7.99 UPS ground?

Thanks,
Roy

At the final invoicing phase, just before submitting the order, more shipping options appear.  I just tried it and it does indeed show a USPS First Class option of $3.49.

That is really weird, I click on the more options and I don't get that. I'm just ordering a 100 BS170s and I'm here in the USA? Oh well. 🤷

Roy,

I did notice that I do not get the low USPS pricing until fully logged in.  I’m a high volume purchaser and often get free 2-day UPS shipping with notice after the order.  So, it’s possible that the First Class rate only shows up for some users.  I’d like to hear from others if they also see the lower priced First Class mail option.

It’s not all wonderful though.  Choosing that option sometimes results waiting several weeks for an order to arrive with in-stock items.   So, it’s been a good solution until a part is needed quickly.

I'm a low-volume purchaser with an account, and my options (from initial 'add to cart' all the way thru logging in and making all the selections) were $7.99 for UPS or (click on more options, scroll all the way down) $7.99 for USPS, but the only option was "Priority Mail With Delivery Confirmation". Go figure.

Total was $30.25 for 100 of them, so probably a lifetime supply. 8*)

See attachment of my Mouser shipping options.  It shows the USPS Economy option.

I just ordered 20 of them and when checking out, I clicked on "More shipping options" at the bottom, and I was able to select $3.49 for 7-10 day shipping.
I did log into the account though.

I bought 100 today (to obtain the large discount on the per device cost), and I did see multiple options for $6.99 shipping, so I selected one for 2nd day delivery.  Tracking indicates it will indeed arrive July 28.

I wonder if it has to do with the quantity, once you get past a certain weight on USPS you can no longer get the regular first class rate.

Why would any one person need 100 of those?

What is this ‘need’ of which you speak? 🤓

Need, want....whatever. What single ham would ever use 100 of them and make the supply problem even worse for others? That's my point.

Jim Strohm

I got 200 pcs.

Since they came from a semi-Tier 1 vendor, it won't substantially
decrease the supply for the rest of us, but it will greatly increase
the number of freebies I can share. IIRC Jameco (my vendor) had like
8000 pcs at the time of my order.

Plus, now I have plenty to play with.

I kind of wish I'd picked up a bunch of popular but now obsolete parts
like MPF102 and IRF510 back in the day.

When the shipping cost is way more than the cost of the parts I often order more than I need at that moment.  100 pcs of a jellybean FET isn't going to materially impact the supply problem.
As for that particular BS170 part, it looks like the 2N7002 is a pretty close replacement.  I use the '7002 for HF amplifiers in the 1W range (running Class-E), and also for general switching applications.

The distributor invokes the incentive to purchase in quantities.  When I see a 52% discount at 100 pieces, and the same $3.49 U.S. shipping whether it’s a quantity of 10 or 100, then I’ll get 100 and have an additional hedge on the leaded TO-92 case style going obsolete.  Not if, but when.

Paul, W9AC

Jim Strohm

Interesting about the 2N7002.

Like you, when shipping is a large component of the cost of landing a
box of parts on my doorstep, I usually look to the biggest price break
point -- usually 100 pieces, or else what a case lot costs. As you
can guess, I have more spare parts here than Radio Shack ever had for
in-store stock.

I peeked at datasheets a little, and the 2N7002 seems to be pretty
close to the 2N7000, of which I have a whole bunch. So when I find
them, I may stick them into my QDX and see what happens. Or I may do
the right thing and build up a few oscillators and amplifiers, and
view them on a spectrum analyzer. Back before I retired, I collected
a lot of semi-obsolete test gear. Now I have time to play with it.

I'll share my results, including how the BS170 performs. If I were
getting paid to do it, I'd do a compare-and-contrast datasheet
compilation between the TO-92 versions of the 2N7000, 2N7002, and
BS170. I might even toss in the MPF102 ... but I generally need some
motivation to perform semi-clerical tech writing like that. A decent
hourly rate for Motorola, Freescale, Dell, IBM, and a few others used
to motivate me. Without that, nowadays sometimes I just like to sit
in my back yard in the morning, listen to the birds chirp, read my
paper, and watch my bunnies frolic.

Retirement is good. And as they say, every day is a Saturday except
for Saturday.

P.S. I may have tracked down a Raspberry Pi 4 without the 999-week lead time.
