QDX: Section 2.16 “replace 47uH inductors”

Jason K7JWN

Folks at home,
I built the QDX kit over the weekend. Enjoyed every moment of this build.

The error occurred when I got to section 2.16. I was fitting the wired axial inductor in place as per the instructions, when I crushed, or cracked the C2 component. (I was still able to solder the wire to the bottom of C2) Should I replace the item, or will it not affect the device?

The QDX connects to my Windows 10 pc with no issues. I can see received signals on the FT8 & JS8 waterfall. I have not  transmitted yet.

If i need to replace C2, could one of you link me to where I can order this piece?

Best,
Jason K7JWN

It's toast.  Replace it.  If you can fit a leaded component in there... That will work too.

To augment Fred's comment: C2 is absolutely necessary: it's inline with the antenna, so without it the QDX is completely dumb and deaf. I'm not sure how you're getting any signal; maybe it isn't completely destroyed?

It's possible that some coupling is happening even with the cracked chip cap but it's not going to be anywhere near its designed value.

Jason, here's a link to one supplier:

The schematic and parts list don't indicate the voltage of this capacitor. I think the 50v one should work fine but others may comment. It certainly looks like the right physical size you are looking for..... Ron

Yes, the 50V is the part used: it's in an 0805 package.

This seems to happen quite often while building the kits. And really it is a problem very common. Don't bend the PCB!

And don't behead the surface mount devices while snipping the leads of the through hole parts!

Update:
Replaced the damaged surface mount capacitor today. Powered up this awesome QDX. My first contact was Completed while hunting POTA!
Before the bands closed I made a contact with Japan.

Thanks again to The awesome hams that commented and left links.

Jason,

That is exciting.  When I first built my QRP Guys FT8 rig I had turned it on, then turned around to look for something on the other side of the shack and VOILA when I turned back I had already made a contact.  It was exciting but after a while the excitement and fun wore off and so it and the Midnight Designs Phaser I built later sit there unused.  Too many other fun aspects to this great radio hobby.
