Question about using firmware 3.12a with the Ultimate 3 (PCB 4)
Phil N6WKZ
All,
I have a Ultimate 3 currently running firmware 3.09f. I'm using the Si5351A Synthesiser module. Can I up grade to the latest firmware 3.12a ? 73 Phil N6WKZ |

Hi Phil No. V3.09f was the last firmware version that supported both the AD9850 DDS and the Si5351A synthesizer chip. After that, AD9850 DDS code was removed from the firmware to make space for other enhancements. So for a while the same firmware was compatible with U3 and U3S but in the end the U3S firmware dropped U3 compatibility. That end, was v3.09f. If you want to use v3.12a you have to upgrade your hardware too, by replacing the AD9850 DDS with the Si5351A Synth board http://qrp-labs.com/synth That is straightforward plug-in replacement. However your output power will be cut in half. If that bothers you then you need to make a few other changes as documented here: http://qrp-labs.com/ultimate3/u3mods/u3tou3s.html So in summary - to use v3.12a you will need to install a Si5351A Synth http://qrp-labs.com/synth and make a few other wiring changes to make your U3 equivalent to U3S. 73 Hans G0UPL http://qrp-labs.com On Mon, Nov 9, 2020, 02:43 Phil N6WKZ <n6wkz@...> wrote: All, |

Hans, I am using the Si5351A and I believe that I cut off one pin. Would that be my problem? Phil PS The 3S software (3.12a) seems to be a lot faster, that is why I wanted to up grade. Why does the the QCX output so much more power in the wspr mode? Great projects, great support. Thank you! 73 Phil N6WKZ On 11/8/2020 10:21 PM, Hans Summers

Hi Phil
If you cut off the recommended pin for the situation where using the Si5351A Synth in an old U3 Board, then it would be no problem. If you cut off a different pin then it could be your problem, depending on which pin you cut off. Actually that's hard to answer in any event because this is the first time you have mentioned having any problem - in your original post I was under the impression you have a U3... I suppose I missed the fact that you said already you have a Si5351A... sorry about that - I blame junior lab tech inflicted sleep deprivation here
QCX has a 5W Class-E PA running at 12V. The U3S is a single transistor in class C at 5V... 73 Hans G0UPL http://qrp-labs.com |
