My 1st QCX+ was a disaster, I destroyed several solder pads and created a short on the Front Panel PCB. But got through it. I had to added a couple jumper wires to replace missing-non-functioning pads

You should be fine. Hans' video on tweaking the LPF toroids shows him doing just what you describe (soldering on top of the board) when removing wire turns -- and this is for "factory" built radios he
