I just checked, a simple USB meter says 0.07A/0.08A, not sure how near this might be but not inconsiderable. This includes the LED of a 4 line display, a significant saving could be made by switching

Bob, I do not know but if I I'd think it would probably not get damaged by 6V from 4 new alkaline AAs but for more safety I'd use a series silicon diode. It would then drop 0.6V and act as a polarity
