Adding an on-off switch to my QCX

John

Good morning all. I have my QCX radio in an enclosure made by Mike-W$MHZ.
I was wonder if any of you have this enclosure and have you added the switch.

It has been a while since I posted here. Been busy with other things. But I got my QCX40 off the shelf and made another modification to it. I didn’t like the idea of it powering up just as soon as I plugged it in. So I found a switch in my junk box, did some wiring and then some cutting and filing on the QCX enclosure and now have a On/Off switch.  I have seen where others have done the same thing as me when it come to the button for the S1 switch so you can key the radio without having a straight key. The power switch has been something I have wanted to do ever since I got the radio last summer. Just now getting around to it, Field Day is coming up!! LOL Used it last year operating FD from my back deck and made 35 contacts before I called it quits.

Here is my QCX40 with the enclosure. First mod that was done to the QCX, well the enclosure, was add a bail stand on the bottom so it is tilted up when on a table. Second mod to the enclosure was to add a button to operate the S1 switch for keying. This is helpful for those time when you rush out and forgot the straight key to operate the rig. The third mod, which was to the QCX and the enclosure was to add the power on/off switch on the front.

A closer view of the QCX. The switch was just small enough to fit between the circuit board and the top, and the left side and the volume control. Made some measurements, drew the outline of the switch, crossed my fingers and took to the drill press to drill holes. Finished cutting out between the holes and then with needle file, filed everything smooth. Did have to remove the nylon screw from the post that holds the circuit board down, on only three nylon screws holds the board down.

Here is a close up of the switch. In the down position it supplies power to the QCX board. Of course in the up position it powers off the radio.

Well done, again!  I added the "key" button to mine months ago, the power switch will be next.  Like to see your "bail" mod; I made a little tilt up stand from wood, works, but something else to have to pack/carry.  Thanks again, 73, Karl, KO8S

You should at least try to adjust the contrast.

Yes, I added an on/off switch.  I have the German enclosure.  I added the switch just above the earphone jack.  Seems like a good place.
I drilled the enclosure with the right size drill.  The enclosure is aluminum so it was an easy drill.  Bolted on the switch.  Connected the switch in the RED (positive) wire. When it's off, it's completely off.

BTW, I now needed to re-align my unit.  In the NAQCC sprint last night, I was disapointed.  Turns out that the sensitivity was way down, and I could hear stations on my big rig that were silent on my QCX.  So this morning I went through the alignment process again.  Don't know why, but aligning R27 (I/Q) helped in aligning C1 for peak.  R24 and R17 (audio phase adjust) seems to like it best when I crank them down all the way - clockwise.  Is this expected?

Today I needed to re-align my unit. Because, in the NAQCC sprint last night, I was disappointed.  Turns out that the sensitivity was way down, and I could hear stations on my big rig that were silent on my QCX.  So this morning I went through the alignment process (page 63 in the manual) again.  Don't know why, but aligning R27 (I/Q) helped in aligning C1 for peak.  R24 and R17 (audio phase adjust) seems to like it best when I crank them down all the way - clockwise.  Is this expected?

Thanks for the reply Richard.

Contrast and backlight have been adjusted. Still only one row of blocks. All soldering of IC2, display header and Schottky diode mod checked under a microscope and look good. Continuity of display header to corresponding IC2 pins checked.

Next test is to borrow an ATMega328 with an older version of the firmware.

#qcx QCX Kit Upgraded Revision 2 From a Swap Meet - Ready for SOTA #qcx

Dan Pflugrath

I purchased an unbuilt QCX-30 Revision 2 kit at a swap meet and ordered the capacitors to make it a QCX-20.  It went together without much difficulty and worked well both receive and transmit with an output power of 3 watts.  Per the discussions it put out 3.5 watts after I removed a turn from L3.  I then proceeded to blow one of the BS170's (shorted) which blew Q6 after upping the supply voltage to 16 volts hoping to run it directly off of a 4 cell LiPo battery.   I replaced all three BS170's, Q6 and the 74ACT00N which may have been damaged when the BS170 shorted.  Once I put it back together it is now outputting 5 watts with a supply voltage ranging from 12.5 volts to 13.5 volts.

I plan to use the QCX-20 for SOTA so I made my chassis out of polycarbonate sheet as small as possible, 4.5 X 5 X 1.5 inches.  Included inside are an 850 mAh 4 cell LiPo battery and a regulator to keep the supply voltage to 13.5 volts or less.

In the picture all that is needed is my End Fed Half Wave antenna.  My first contact with the completed assembly was from the Seattle area to Alaska with a 589 report.

My 40M Ammo can QCX and I have found a new home (Well a second home) . 1.6 Acres in the Western VA Mountains. Its for sure no perfect location, but I have trees TALL TALL SCARY trees that tower over what seems everything, and lots of land.. as well as some ambition, however I only have a 6' step ladder! DOE!!! (Homer voice) What are you fellas using to launch fishing line up high to string antennas? And by high I mean HIGH..60+ feet. I been QRV a bit signing N2JDQ/4 but its just a low cloud burning dipole ..its time for some height! I do love my QCX, but a full QRO rig is in my near future..but dont fret, Ill never part with my QCX I absolutely love the thing!

Joe,
Assuming no construction errors, and age & version of your kit / assembly manual.

If the belief is the QCX lacks sensitivity perhaps the first place to try is the C1 adjustment. This is the only one that effects the RF sensitivity.
The preset resistor adjustments, all operate in the I/Q circuitry and provides the opposite sideband rejection, as this is not a traditional superhet design.

C1 is the BPF alignment, Hans notes there can be more than one peak in the filter response, and to tune the one which shows the highest level.
Recent manuals advise making adjustment while connected to a dummy load as this better reflects real world use when connected to an aerial,
previously it was with an unloaded circuit.

From now on, the alignment is also dependent on the user AF gain setting, you need a high enough level to display a clear range between? min / maximum but not too high it overloads the detector.
See second paragraph of page 70

R27 I/Q Balance is adjusted for a minimum unbalance between the I/Q paths

R24 Phase Lo, is adjusted for minimum unwanted sideband response

R17 Phase Hi,
is again adjusted for minimum unwanted sideband response

You describe R24 & R17 show best performance when adjusted to their extreme clockwise limit.
If applicable to your age of kit see http://qrp-labs.com/qcx/qcxfaq.html#203
Alternatively, but only describing lack of ANTI-clockwise adjustment range of R24 due to component tolerances
is a component revision applied to the latest builds and is noted? at the bottom of page 7 of the current manual.

If problems are encountered perhaps:-

Large inductors in GPS supply and data lines ?

Last week I attempted to reduce some of the noise that can be emitted out of a U3S.

Nothing specific to the U3, but as we know, just about any electronic device puts out some crap on
incoming or outgoing cabling. (GPS is in a remote separate box).

So I added some 470mh (MILLI-HENRY) chokes in the 1pps, data and 5v supply lines coming out of the
U3S. DC resistance is 7 ohms per choke.

Everything appeared normal I thought, but I have now observed some odd behaviour.

Occasionally I see the heartbeat give odd beats, strange time settings, the calibration whizzing off in only a few seconds.

Is it the chokes messing with the 9K6 data, and 1 PPS ?

Surely DC stuff, it shouldn't matter - but then I  might be wrong.

Has anyone ever seen the effects of inductance with data at a measly 9K6, or a simple 1PPS line ?

At 9.6kHz 470mH is about 28k ohm.

THe tool I used is a modified WristRocket to include a spinning reel
full of 10 pound test and the weight is a 1-1.5oz sinker.

That has worked for stuff to 60ft (tall for here) with ease.
More often I'm shooting for crook or limb in a useful place
rather than just over the whole shrub.

Once over I use it to pull back a piece of .050 paracord which is
strong enough to pull heavy lines if needed.  The usual line is
5/16 or 1//4 inch dacron line.

I added a switch to my QCX-40 but I have a homebrew case where the controls are relocated.  So, I just got a volume control with an On/Off swtich.  Also relocated the "stock" straight key.

Thanks to those that replied to my on-off switch question. I am defiantly going to make this mod. I have a small rocker switch I’d like to use but will require a rectangular hole and not sure I can cut it in the plastic case. I’ll have to contact the builder if the case for his advice.

Have a great Field Day weekend.

First - congratulations!

Second - similar situation here, surrounded by 110' + trees.  I use a pneumatic launcher which is accurate ans easily puts lines over my trees.  This is the modle I use.

And it will slow the rise time of the data.
What made you think 9k6 data was DC?

Its anything but DC!

The 1PPS signal is slow but the edges are square so any large inductance
or capacitance will distort the signal.

At 9600 that would be a killer.

Keep the chokes under 10-20uH (that's microhenry).

The DC lines that's ok but only the +V.  Ground for RF and Data
must be a solid ground within the circuit.

How about a nice strong sling shot... Thin wire... small fishing weight... Never used one myself, but we had one of those two man long surgical tubing sling shots at a camp out once.... Awesome flight with eggs! Should send over a few trees!
