It's good advice to hold off reinstallation of the BS-170's until you verify you are getting the proper waveforms out of the Tx driver, IC5.

I'm ask him to buy you a new one as a replacement! I would insist,
you break it fix it or replace it.
Give the board a good scrub (get the soot off) and replace the act08 and

Re: Newbie question: Antenna Tuner
QRPGuys.com has one for $50, but the ATU-100 costs less and can handle up to 100W. Seach eBay and Amazon using "HF antenna tuner" or "HF antenna tuner kit" and you should see lots of options.

Newbie question: Antenna Tuner
Hi,
is there a QRP antenna tuner kit available?
If not at QRPLabs, then maybe anywhere else?

Personally I’d chock that up to experience about loaning such gear to “friends” and order one of the revision 4 units. If your “friend “ offers to pay for it, then he is and worth keeping.

Brian,
Impressive!
The current might have baked and flaked the PC traces where L14 connects. You'll know more after some of that carbon/resin compound gets removed.

Elevated radials 2-3' off the ground at 30-45 degree angles has always been the secret to high performance with verticals. Did some tests 5 years ago with an S9 and on -ground radials; then 3' off

My thanks to all valuable comments and thoughts. I will have to research Mel's PAC-12 vertical. My EFHW has done a Youmans job in the field. I just like to look at alternatives to throwing a line

Re: Success with QRP Labs kits
I'll second that, my 3S and QDX are working perfectly, did 13 colonies with just the QDX this year.
I received and finished a QCX mini yesterday and my only complaint is that it went to together TOO
