Here is what the message is that I see every time I click on the program button:

avrdude.exe done.  Thank you.

I'm using an Arduino UNO new out of the package, the interface cable is exactly like described in the updating article and everything is set per the instructions in both the UNO and the AVRDUDESS program.  I've even tried another new UNO with the same results.  I was able to save the hex file to a folder on my computer and told the program to find it there.

I just found the problem......bad wire on my interface cable.  I just loaded the program in the QCX and it came up saying the revision level was 1.01a so it worked.

Thanks to everyone for helping with ideas on this problem.  Glad I was able to make this work and found out new uses for an Arduino UNO and a bit about AVRDUDESS also.

Gary,

Do you literally mean  "and using the http://qrp-labs.com/images/qcx/firmware/T1.01a.hex as the file location" in the AVR software?
You need to right click on the link and do a 'file save' to your local drive.  Typically somewhere where you know the file location.
Then use that path or move the file to the subdirectory where your AVR programming software is.  You won't be able to download it across the internet using the AVR* programming software.

If you have it downloaded locally and it doesn't work, I don't have a clue.

Lou, VK5EEE, built an early QCX and used the cardboard box. It appealed to me because I reasoned a $49 radio would not feel comfortable in an expensive box. I wanted a little more protection though so bent up some aluminum and acrylic I had around. I only moved/changed the power connector, and added the integral paddle. DL6OWT went too far into the Northern Hemisphere and is not getting enough sunlight to power the tracker from solar cells.
The cells appear to be producing too little power with the lower solar angles as the seasons change. We have seen this happen often where they appear weeks later when they drop lower into the South...never know.
Thanks for listening for the signal..was hoping it dropped back down around Alaska or even Canada somewhere.

I've been trying to update my QCX transceiver to the new 101a file but it just won't work.  I'm using the process for updating with an Arduino UNO and the AVRDUDESS program.  I have the interconnect cable exactly as shown in the instructions plus everything set up per the instruction, and using the http://qrp-labs.com/images/qcx/firmware/T1.01a.hex as the file location.

All I get is an error message at the end after clicking on the Program button.

I have no clue what else is going wrong.  Anyone else had success using this set of instructions?

with a dvm on receive pin 9 is not dead zero but its 0.005 to 0.039 v
& on transmit pin 9 is 0.123 v and on the scope you can see a slightly fuzzy tiny jump up barely above baseline
the pin 8 on transmit looks just like the other 5v square waves
its a 40MHz scope
i agree, if 9 is low then 8 should stay a constant flat 5 volts and not a square wave but i have two QCXs that have a 5v square wave on transmit
what could be causing this???
thanks

I'm building the QLG1 kit to use with the WSPR beacon kit with the QRPLabs enclosure so I have ordered a quality external GPS antenna.  The QLG1 docs state that if an external antenna is used then R10 should typically be 10 ohms and L3 is 27nH or a ferrite bead. I would greatly appreciate some guidance as to what others here have successfully used..... Current capacity of the 10 ohm resistor? , and size and mix of the ferrite??  Thanking everyone in advance. Has this mod progressed any this fall?

Has anyone tried data modes like FT8 or JS8CALL?

Re: Qcx firmware update questions.

Michael,

Can the firmware be updated with the chip in place and if so where do I find the yellow brick road that will tell me how?
I am surprised you need to ask! There have been a large number of posts about this in the last few days.
Look back, there should be something that covers your needs

If I cut the old chip out and just order a new updated chip, is there room enough to install a low profile socket so I dont have to perform that level of surgery again?
The kit normally includes this socket, the Atmel is not intended to be soldered directly. However, this would normally only be a problem if it should develop a fault. I think most people use the in-circuit programming method.

Readings on a DVM need to be considered carefully. The figures you give are zero if rounded to the second decimal place,

& on transmit pin 9 is 0.123 v and on the scope you can see a slightly
fuzzy tiny jump up barely above baseline

With RF around readings are suspect, you are expecting things to be perfect. You are not likely to get any better than what you see.

if 9 is low then 8 should stay a constant flat 5 volts and not a square wave but i have two QCXs that have a 5v square wave on transmit

thanks
Disregarding what you see on the scope are they both working correctly?
If so then I suspect all you are seeing is the result of high RF around this area. I think the scope can be a useful instrument but sometimes it may give misleading results.

An Arduino board and AVRdudess is my go-to for updating 328s; I can relate to your bad wire issue...I spent a couple hours a few weeks ago chasing an issue that turned out to be a certain someone having the 6 pin plug flipped on the Ardunio board....and since it still appeared to power the chip, didn't even think about that being the issue.

1/4 watt 10 ohm resistor I had on hand, and about 5 turns of scrap wire from another QRP-Labs build, wrapped around a T37 core. Did not even measure the choke to see how close I got to 27 nH, to be honest.

That's been the solution on 2 boards, has worked fine.

Hi David,

Yes! the mod has progressed quite a bit, and I hope to release any time soon, stay tuned.

The current QCX-SSB in GitHub handles FT8 pretty well and in transmit outputs a very clean carrier.
