Re: Too much QCX stuff

Let me just add that I REALLY like the way most put the kit name in the subject line - QCX, U3S, LPF, BPF, etc. With that as the first word in the subject, easy to filter out what is not of interest.

QCX not starting up - bad chips??

I am troubleshooting a 30M QCX for someone, and we have the 'dreaded' top row of boxes at power up. All physical checks have been done and all looks good. Also, the 20MHZ crystal signal is loud in my HF receiver at about 20.004 MHZ. All approved/recommended mods have been performed, with a new 22 uH inductor (L5) from Pin 7 to pin 20 on the uP.  Ignoring the N/C LCD pins 7-10 voltages at LCD pins, verified also on the main PCB, are normal until pins 12 and 13, which both are at zero V. There is no difference with LCD connected or disconnected. My assessment is the micro processor is not functioning. Anyone have other ideas or suggested tests to try?

There also seems to be a problem with the Si5351, as Clk 1 has no signal that I can measure or hear on the HF rig. Clk 0 is loud in the receiver, and shows 2.02 VRMS and my counter measures 27.00347 mhz. Should the 5351 start up with both outputs enabled and putting out a signal? Should Clk 0 be at the crystal frequency? .......Do we have a bad RF chip?

Thanks to all for all the tons of info that has been generated about this kit, esp on this subject. It has been a great help to get me this far.

Elecraft manuals are just as good or even better (color photos!) than the Heathkit ones were.

Re: Ahhhh wheres the board?

Looks like a stand-alone LPF bag. The one with my QCX kit did not have the two 4-pin SIL headers.

If that bag is part of a QCX kit, there is not supposed to be a board. Those parts go on the QCX board. The bag contains all the parts from the low pass filter EXCEPT the board.

If you bought a low pass filter kit, it looks like the shippers made a mistake and sent you a bag that was supposed to go into a QCX kit.

Dear Al,

That has all the indications that your power supply isn't giving you enough current for the transmitter.  Another hint is to glue a 4-40 Nut to the crystal can of the 27MHz Crystal.  What happens is the can temperature changes the crystal frequency abruptly.   The nut glued on the top of the can changes its temperature profile and it quits Jittering.   If you can find a better 5 Volt power supply that has about 2 amps regulated and glue the nut on the 27MHz crystal can in the oscillator board I think you too will have nice straight lines.   I have similar pictures on my grabber of your signal.  They were weak and with the noise and the wobble. I couldn't decode the call sign.   So you are getting out.  It is just very hard to read.

Good luck,   If I can help further, Just ask.

In the GPS instructions there is a statement that the interface cable between the GPS and QRSS/WSPR kit requires a shielded cable. Is a shielded cable also required on the GPS QCX interface ? There is no mention of it in the QCX manual that I can find.

Hi Jack,
Yes I agree and can remember the Heathkit manuals. I built a signal generator and a multi purpose electronics kit in the 60 '.  This spent most of the time as a radio listening to coastal marine radio stations on the East coast of UK. No surprises I ended up as a Marine Radio Officer at sea and later several jobs in electronics.

Hi Ken,
I take your point but I have most of the kits that Hans has produced and like to hear about them all on the forum. The QCX is a special case I suppose as it has proved to be so popular.
My own gripe is the number of postings asking questions that are already well covered in the truly excellent documentation, Hans must get frustrated by this having spent time and effort creating it!

Hi Roger
Indeed so!  In both the big and small things.
He starts by explaining where the simple name, QCX came from.
The paragraphs that are most telling are headed A modern oscillator.
" I always start a radio design with the oscillator. It's fundamental to everything that follows."
A truly excellent well informed, well communicated article
