Multiple BS170 causing U3S instabilities?

I just finished building my second U3S. This one is to be used primarily on 630 meters and initial tests into a 50 Ohm load have been good. I decided to install 3 BS170 FETs not so much for higher power output but to keep them running cool during extended WSPR transmissions. I'm using a 5V 1A linear regulator power supply to feed the U3S and the PA section. With a 50 Ohm load I have the PA biased for 200 mW power out.

I wanted to try a brief test with an actual antenna to see how bad VSWR might be. I connected it to a 135' inverted "L" antenna through a 4:1 unun. But when going into "tune" using the right pushbutton I've seen some odd results. The first one was the U3S stayed in transmit even though I had released the pushbutton. At other times the display has started flickering or odd characters are displayed. I also tested this problem with no load connected to the U3S and got about the same results, more or less a lock up of the system.

But, none of this happens with the 50 Ohm termination; the system seems very stable and transmitted output is fine.

Before going back to the single BS170 PA I thought I'd ask here to see if this a known behavior and whether or not trying to spread the thermal load over 3 FETs is a good idea or not.

I see, so if I set frame time to 12 or 14, the unit should cycle through all 6 Bands?

 

I am into to dummy load and set to 02 00, and it only transmits on 1 band the last one I set.

What frame parameters have you set? Six bands is 12 minutes add an additional 2 minutes for calibration and you should end up with the first frame parameter set at 14.

Hope this is correct. Anyway would be interesting knowing what frame parameters you are actually using.

I am trying to build a transceiver using the U3S Tx as the LO. What is the difference between using the ‘RX’ mode (LO @4x displayed freq) and PARK mode set to 4x Rx freq ?

I will check them out, I having trouble getting the unit to cycle through all the 6 bands at the moment, 30,20,17,15,12,101!!! Seems stuck on 1, i.e. the last one I set.

 

I do not find the instructions clear at all!

Hi Andrew,
Don't worry too much about the wire gauge being different on the rewound toroids.
The LPF's are a tame design, for repeatability.

I replied before with a link to Han's page showing example plots of selected LPF's.
30Mtrs was one of them. I'm sure there are plots from other builders somewhere.
If you log in QRP-Labs IO groups with a web browser use the search function or have a look in 'Files' folder ?
Else the LPF is based on W3NQN / G-QRP designs. Somebody must have posted examples on the interweb...
Concentrate on getting the fundamental out, you have the gear to fine tune the cut off at a later date in any case.

It's three bit's of wire and four capacitors.
In your best Jeremy Clarkson voice,
ask your self. 'How hard can it be ?'  ;-)

As you have a pair of poor performing LPF's ,
You didn't wind 20M toroids for the 30M LPF & vice versa. That is a good point I will double check, I have re wound the 20M using new wire  0.36mm slightly fatter than what is supplied,16, 17 16
& I would still do the DC check on the poor performing LPF's as a quick check ? I have done the DC check, will check to see if less than 1 ohm.

2.      Have you seen some plots that other hams have done for 20 and 30 Metres?

I have just measured the 20meter LPF, see below:  insertion loss 2.466dB !! L, I am making the 17,15,12,and 10 today so will measure each on in turn. And post for those who are interested. Maybe I am crap at winding the coils.

 

I normalised out the connection cables, which are 0.5M each.

 

So my U3S is 125mW ( adding 2.466dB) which is nearer the mark, I will check what the loss is on other LPF.

I am trying to program a ATMEG168for the Ultimate2 the FW 2.07
In the programming guide is written.......
There are two files:
This is the hex file of the program:
Ultimate2.05.hex                                          (I will use 2.07)
This is the EEPROM file containing the
default configuration settings+
Ultimate2.05.eep
Be sure to select both files, in the location
where you store them on your computer,
in the “Flash” and “EEPROM” sections of
the “Program” tab.

I could finde under FILES the Ultimate2.07.hex but not a Ultimate2.07.eep
From where can i get it ?????

I don’t understand the 30 dB of return loss in the stopband. These filters should reflect energy back to the source away from the passband, and how come the reflected plots have the same shape regardless of which frequency band you are testing? If you spread the turns on the 20 m filter, does the passband response change? Use the reflected S11 plot to tune the filters (once they are correct) – much easier than using the S21 plots…

& I would still do the DC check on the poor performing LPF's as a quick check ? I have done the DC check, will check to see if less than 1 ohm.

I have just measured the 20meter LPF, see below:  insertion loss 2.466dB !! L, I am making the 17,15,12,and 10 today so will measure each on in turn. And post for those who are interested. Maybe I am crap at winding the coils.

 

I normalised out the connection cables, which are 0.5M each.

 

So my U3S is 125mW ( adding 2.466dB) which is nearer the mark, I will check what the loss is on other LPF.

I don’t understand the 30 dB of return loss in the stopband. These filters should reflect energy back to the source away from the passband, and how come the reflected plots have the same shape regardless of which frequency band you are testing? If you spread the turns on the 20 m filter, does the passband response change? Use the reflected S11 plot to tune the filters (once they are correct) – much easier than using the S21 plots…

Is it the same 20M LPF, you stated on the 11th Aug had a through loss of 0.3dB ?

Have you DC continuity through the filter & If you push & pull on the inductor leadouts does it change?  :-[

Hopefully trying to be 'being helpful & not abrupt.'

I have just measured the 20meter LPF, see below:  insertion loss 2.466dB !! L, I am making the 17,15,12,and 10 today so will measure each on in turn. And post for those who are interested. Maybe I am crap at winding the coils.

 

I normalised out the connection cables, which are 0.5M each.

 

So my U3S is 125mW ( adding 2.466dB) which is nearer the mark, I will check what the loss is on other LPF.

RIGHT:- 10 10 gives 10 minutes between transmissions.
How does that affect additional mode transmissions "stacked" afterwards?  None will transmit more than once every ten minutes and when the last is finished, everything will idle until the next ten-minute cycle starts again, right?
Yes, I was assuming just one mode setting.

Rather abrupt!

 

Return loss was not on the same scale I moved reference level.

 

I have corrected in later plots, S11 was not my concern, as through loss on 20M was high, so is 30m!
