I use a $3.98 soldering iron from Home Depot Stores.  When plugged
into a $2.49 light dimmer socket it is controllable from cold to over 700
degrees, measured with a non-contact thermometer, also from Harbor
Freight.  The iron comes with 2 spare tips.  The knob on the light
dimmer can be calibrated by observing measured temperature versus
knob position.

Many thanks to all who replied to my question about soldering irons.  I think I now know which of my existing options I will use.  Unfortunately, any thought of further expense for a tool to build the kit I just got permission to buy would be a hanging offense.  Can't risk it.
