For the nearly indigent among us, there is this diy stereo microscope from a Hackaday article (just search Hackaday for "stereo microscope").  Two pairs of cheap, plastic toy binoculars and a bit of epoxy.  I like the clarity of Chuck's photo, but I don't have $500.00+ to spend for an iPad.  Another advantage of the stereo scope is that you can move your project around under the scope without having to change the focus - your eyes (or, at least, my eyes) will make up for the minor changes.
