Using Pre existing text grids in Praat in FormantPro

Kathryn Daniels

I have already generated text grids in PHON, and can open them in Praat. But they are not available when I open the Sound file in FormantPro, so have to redo them.
Is there a way to bring the text grid information across?
I have 3 or 4 tiers in the PHON text grid. Will that be a problem?
thanks
Kathryn

You need to first start FormantPro and select Run. In the opening dialogue, change TextGrid extension from .label to the extension of your own TextGrid files, say .TextGrid, and press OK.

Thank you

I have put in the file type .TextGrid as below, but with no success. Does the text grid need to be saved to the same folder as the sound file?

Also
Now when I try to do repetitions of the same phrase by a single user I get an error message :

The variable mean_mean117 does not exist. You can only modify existing variables.
Script line 1023 not performed or completed:
<< mean_meanF1’n’ += meanF1>>
Please change something in the command window “Run script: Start’, or click cancel in that window.

Are you able to help me with this?

Thank you

Yes, they do need to be in the same folder as the sound files.

The repetition_list.txt file needs to be generated by yourself to allow unequal number of repetitions across conditions. If all your conditions have the same number of repetitions, there is no need to use this feature. Also the repetition information is needed only for the task "Get ensemble files”. It is not needed for interactive labeling.

These are all explained in the detailed instructions on the FormanPro web page.

Hi Yi
Thank you so much for your quick and helpful responses.
I have followed the website instructions as you suggested and the Econo part of my question has resolved. Thank you

However I cannot manage to move the textgrid file in Praat to the folder with FormantPro. In praat I select the text file, select Save from the ribbon menu. I’ve tried all the save options, and then run FormantPro. I change the txtGrid file to .TextGrid, but the file list is only recognising the sound file, and there is nothing showing in the first or second tier. My original text grid in Praat was 4 tiers, but when I remove tiers and only leave one, I still have no results. I am runnibg the programme on a PC.

And can I just check I am using the correct webpage
Thank you again for your help and programme

Hi Kathryn,

FormantPro cannot move files around. That needs to be done under your computer’s operation system.

Hi Kathryn,

There is no need to save it manually. When you press the Next button in the Pause window (see attached image), the TextGrid file is automatically saved by FormantPro, together with many other files generated by the script. Again, this is also explained on the web page.

Best,

Yi

Thanks again
I understand the textgrid is saved after I have created the script in Formant Pro. I was able to do this as you have explained
My request is about using text grids that have already been completed in Praat (or PHON2) before running FormantPro. I have already done them, and don’t want to redo them in Formant Pro. Is there a way to bring them into the programme, rather than do task 1 in Formant Pro?

Kathryn

This was explained in my very first reply to your initial inquiry: "You need to first start FormantPro and select Run. In the opening dialogue, change TextGrid extension from .label to the extension of your own TextGrid files, say .TextGrid, and press OK."

Of course, before doing that, you need to put all the TextGrid files you have already created into the same folder as the sound files. But this step needs to be done as a desktop operation, as FormantPro does not move files for you.

My request is about using text grids that have already been completed in Praat (or PHON2) before running FormantPro. I have already done them, and don’t want to redo them in Formant Pro. Is there a way to bring them into the programme, rather than do task 1 in Formant Pro?

However I cannot manage to move the textgrid file in Praat to the folder with FormantPro. In praat I select the text file, select Save from the ribbon menu. I’ve tried all the save options, and then run FormantPro. I change the txtGrid file to .TextGrid, but the file list is only recognising the sound file, and there is nothing showing in the first or second tier. My original text grid in Praat was 4 tiers, but when I remove tiers and only leave one, I still have no results. I am runnibg the programme on a PC.

And can I just check I am using the correct webpage
Thank you again for your help and programme

I have put in the file type .TextGrid as below, but with no success. Does the text grid need to be saved to the same folder as the sound file?

Yes, they do need to be in the same folder as the sound files.

Also
Now when I try to do repetitions of the same phrase by a single user I get an error message :

The variable mean_mean117 does not exist. You can only modify existing variables.

Kathryn Daniels

Hi again. And thank you so much for your patient explanations.
It seems my problem is getting the textgrid from praat to the desktop to put in the folder with FormantPro in a format that works.

The text grid file is in the praat list with the sound file
My options for saving it are as a text file, a short text file, a binary file or chronological text file.
I have tried all of them. They save to the Folder with FormantPro and the sound file .wav and .TextGrid.
I open and run FormantPro, and change the textgrid file to .textgrid as you have said.
But still no text grid information.
Where am I going wrong?
Kathryn

Although I know very little about FormantPro, I suspect that FormantPro can connect sound files to their TextGrid files only if their names correspond. Your sound file is called BB-sound.wav, and your TextGrid file is called default.TextGrid. I suspect, then, that you will have more success if you rename your TextGrid file to BB-sound.TextGrid.

I think Paul is right. FormantPro assumes that the TextGrid file name is the same as the sound name, and they differ only in their extensions. But I also suspect that you may encounter further problems as many other things about your operation are unclear to me. If you don’t want to bother too many other people on this list, you are welcome to write to me privately to resolve any further issues.
