There is also 'Wavesurfer', which does some phonetic analysis (pitch,
waveform, spectra etc), and runs on Mac, PC, and Linux. I haven't used
it extensively, but one especially nice feature is that it will read .sd
sound files on a PC.

yeah, let's hear about them.
'SND' is a sound editor for Unix/Linux that is well worth looking into. It
is no replacement for Praat, though. (Not that Praat needs replacement!) It
is mainly an editor, but it has some analytic capabilities.
