Tony's Track, But Just for a Day

Speedway, IN -- What do you give as a farewell gift to an Indiana native son who's competed in five Indianapolis 500s, won the Brickyard 400 twice, and is the only driver to win IndyCar and Nascar championships? If he's Tony Stewart, you give him a dirt track in recognition of his final appearance at IMS in this year's July Nascar event.

IMS gives Stewart a special loud playground. photo: Fritz Frommeyer

"He really loves short-track racing," IMS president Doug Boles said of Stewart, "So it was a pretty easy decision for us."

More than 50 truckloads of dirt later, a 3/16ths flat track sprang up inside the big oval's turn three. Working with USAC, there were six midgets at IMS the evening of July 5 to run exhibition laps on the new surface, which held up well. Stewart, of course, had his turn at the wheel, along with former IndyCar driver Sarah Fisher, and Bryan Clauson, USAC champ and two-time "500" starter. Other USAC drivers also participated.

"Never in our lifetime," would Stewart have thought of seeing cars race on a dirt track inside the Speedway.

"My pavement career happened because of (competing on) dirt tracks," he said. "If you can control a car on a track like this, you can race anywhere."

The temporary track was built just for the day and is being removed, but Boles didn't hide the fact that this could lead to something permanent. If that would happen, "We would never do a weekly race here" like so many short tracks do, he said. "It would have to be something pretty special."

Don't count it out.

Penske Receives IMRRC's Argetsinger Award

Corning, NY -- A capacity crowd at the Corning Museum of Glass was treated to an evening of tributes, shout-outs, slide shows and interviews June 30 as the International Motor Racing Research Center presented the Cameron R. Argetsinger Award to racing icon Roger Penske.

Penske, whose Team Penske is celebrating 50 years in the sport this year, received the award from Argetsinger's sons J.C. and Duke, along with Bobby Rahal, four-time Indianapolis 500 winner and chairman of the IMRRC's Governing Council.

Later in the evening, Penske fielded questions about his personal life and career, along with the story of a $100 bet with fellow driver Augie Pabst that ended with a car in a hotel swimming pool.

This was the IMRRC's third consecutive presentation of the award recognizing outstanding contributions to motorsports in the name of the founder and organizer of the first races at Watkins Glen, NY. Multi-team owner and former driver Chip Ganassi was the first recipient of the Argetsinger Award in 2014. NASCAR icon Richard Petty was the 2015 honoree.

Golden Gate Ferrari Festival Cancelled

San Francisco CA -- Questions over the structural integrity of the Civic Center Plaza, site of the Sept. 10 Ferrari Festival in the planning for months, have prompted organizers to call off the event.

Safety concerns forced the Ferrari Festival's cancellation photo: Golden Gate Ferrari Festival

A statement from the Ferrari Owners Charitable Foundation cited the lack of adequate time for a structural engineering firm to explore concerns about the plaza's safety for attendees.

As VM noted in the June 23 eNews, the event plans called for a display of more than 400 Ferraris on the Civic Center Plaza, as well as a special appearance by 2016 Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi, as part of raising $500,000 for Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area.

Frank Moriarty, author of several books including Supercars: The Story of the Dodge Charger Daytona and the Plymouth Superbird, will be available to answer questions and sign copies of his book.

Demo Day is included as part of the museum's regular $12 general admission.

Roger,
Had similar problems. George Van Horn replaced the coil (it would get hot while driving) and the condenser and rotor.

Over the past year I’ve had four instances of the engine quitting while driving.  If I wait minute or so, it restarts and runs fine for weeks or months.  Attempting an immediate restart when coasting to a stop never works.

Typically quitting happens within a few miles from the beginning of the drive and has never happened after more than 10 or 15 miles.  The last time it happened within two miles.  Also, I thought I heard a small backfire when it quit.  When it quits there is no bucking or loss of power, just a clean stop.

Aside from removal of the air pump and most of the emissions stuff and addition of modern electronic ignition, long before the problem started, the engine is stock.

I recently refurbished the fuel vapor system and checked that all tubing was clear, tested the anti-run on value and tightened rubber tube claps.  The quitting predates this work and the most recent incident was after this work.

Does anyone have ideas on what needs fixing or how to diagnose?

I had heard (and it may be urban legend) that the manual the dealers used directed that the charcoal from the canister be dumped into a pan and ignited with a match. The gas would burn off and then the charcoal would be put back in the canister. Wonder how much they charged for that!

Steve,

Here's a blurb you may want to include.  Though, I think it's mostly for late model Bs.

I'm finishing up refurbing the fuel vapor capture system in my 1978 B.  It hasn't be cleaned or charcoal renewed since the car was new.
The reason I'm doing it is the car quit a couple weeks ago with symptoms of fuel starvation.  The fuel system is airtight and if any of the
tubing or electric valves are blocked the vacuum from consuming fuel can overpower the fuel pump.

The activated charcoal cannisters are $77 each (two needed) from Moss Motors.  But, there is a video on the Internet on how to easily refresh them.
I bought activated charcoal and filter material from a pet store's acquarium isle and it worked great.  Nice savings.

This little project also inspired me to start cleaning up the engine bay.
