COVID- 19
March 2020 - June 2020

As I write, we are nearing the end of our "Stay at Home Orders" and we are looking forward to going YELLOW this Friday June 5th and having our staff return in full force next week.

We have almost a two-month backlog of appointments and we are eager to get some work done while we manage our typical spring service appointments. Mike is ready to welcome our full staff back and he has been taking our employee's temperatures daily to remain safe while we all practice the CDC guidelines.

If you had a spring appointment, we will be in touch soon with a new date  We now can be reached directly on our main number 215.257.1202.  We can schedule a "NO CONTACT PICK-UP OR DELIVERY".  We are looking forward to driving soon and seeing you in the future!  See below for details about our first DRIVING EVENT on Flag Day!

Till then, like the sign says........

Ragtops & Roadsters Covered Bridge Run "DRIVING EVENT"

Many LBC owners can't wait to get out and DRIVE! To answer that need, Ragtops & Roadsters is hosting a driving event on Flag Day, June 14, 2020. Please join us for our first official local British Car driving event since the Covid-19 stay at home orders. We will observe all CDC Guidelines throughout this entire driving event.  We plan to meet where we can get coffee and breakfast and tour through many of the Covered Bridges. This guided tour will be a detailed historical presentation of many bridges. We are carefully planing comfort stops and an outside lunch stop. More details soon.

New Hope Auto Show
August 8th "One Day Only"

As of today, one of the oldest car shows in the country,  the New Hope Auto Show is working hard to keep their 63rd annual show on the 2020 calendar. The Board Secretary, Steve Williams, said that they are hoping to have a show that will be a one day format with less cars and possibly no judging. They are still working out the details and hope to have a viable plan by the middle of June.  If you want stay updated, sign up for their mailing list at the bottom of their homepage

America's British Reliability Run
October 17th or 18th?

SAVE THE DATE! The PA based ABRR is running again this fall on 10/17 or 10/18.  Due to Covid 19 we are still in the planning stages at this time and the ABRR;will be a shortened event this year as at this time;we do not have confidence in staying at hotels or eating inside restaurants.Stay tuned.  At this time, we are planning a single day run with a tour of a major car collection that you do not want to miss! We are still running for the kids at Shriners Hospitals for Children;again this year to support their efforts to treat kids with scoliosis. Keep an eye on our PA website for more details.  We now plan to open registration in late June 2020. Stay tuned.

Motorcars Delivered... Ready for Spring / Summer Driving!

by: Dave Hutchison

We evaluated this Mercedes Benz 280 at Ragtops & Roadsters and the owner had us replace the wood trim in the dash and replace the delaminating windshield. After a safety inspection and service, we delivered this car from our enclosed trailer with a "NO CONTACT DELIVERY" complying with all CDC recommendations!
Why is this man smiling? He just came back from a test drive of his rather spirited Sprite which has a freshly rebuilt and balanced engine with over-sized pistons. He reported that he now has more power and the engine has a much smoother top end.
We preformed a safety inspection on this MGB. We repaired the brakes, replaced the brake booster, flushed the brake and clutch lines, repaired the faulty oil pressure relief valve, replaced all the bad fuel lines, adjusted the carbs and resprayed the bonnet and performed a spring service. This MGB is on the road!
We have cared for this MGB GT for several years. It came to us for a spring service, and fluid change. We also replaced the LayCock de Normanville overdrive lock-out switches for third and fourth gears, replaced some old fuel hoses and fixed the windscreen washer. Look for this GT be out running in the Narbeth area soon.

Isolation Island Concours d Elegance
Four Rounds Completed... Round Five Entries Close on June 8th!

Reprinted with the expressed permission of Andy Reid of Classiccars.com
Our friend at Classiccars.com, Andy Reid, came up with an interesting idea just after the last great Concours of 2019, the "Amelia Island Concours" How about holding an online virtual Concours on Facebook? Thus was born the Isolation Island Concours d Elegance

From Andy, "In this time of no concours events in the car hobby, we thought it would be fun to be able to hold a classic car event virtually, where collectors from around the world can submit a car. These are not cars you trailer to a show but die-cast models of cars. We did this as everyone in the hobby seems to have a large number of these, often replicating their actual collections. The idea was to bring the fun of concours events back into our lives in the most simple and easily accessible way we could think of.
There are a few rules. We want to limit it to a single car submission per person to make it fair to all. In addition, do not submit the same make, model and color car as someone else has already submitted as the first submission of that make, model and color will be the car judged. In addition I have set a price limit of no more than $350 dollar cost for each car. This again opens it up to more people as many cannot afford a $5,000 die-cast. There will be a special class for these type of cars but the majority should be the more affordable variety. Your cars will be judged by class by the best concours judges gathered from around the world and are judges at the worlds finest concours. The idea of this is to create some fun at a time when all of us seem to be looking for it."
"When you submit we ask that you give a 5 dollar donation to a local community food bank or first responders charity in your area. We, like all concours, want to make this a give back in this time of need. It is important to know that, just like every concours event, the most expensive car is not in any way a sure winner. When submitting photos of your car please work to take the best photos you are able to and please limit it to 5 photographs. This is French judging because not every die-cast will have a bonnet that opens. Feel free to show the engine of your car as we will appreciate it, but it will not be a factor for judging. Finally, please work to present your car as clean as possible. A little quick detail and a microfiber go a long way."
I scanned through their Facebook page saw many fantastic models and even a few, but some very significant British Cars. So, I suggest you visit their Facebook Page and dust of your favorite LBC die-cast model and enter Round Five before noon on June 8th! Have fun. Dave

Aston Martin Building Retro DB5 Series
Complete with 007 Spy Gadgets!

Just 25 of the hand-built $3.4 million Goldfinger Continuation cars are planned.

The following article is reprinted with the expressed permission of the author
 Bob Golfen from Classiccars.com May 27, 2020
Hand-building each DB5 Goldfinger takes about 4,500 hours, Aston Martin says | Aston Martin photos

James Bond‚Äôs Aston Martin DB5, dubbed ‚Äúthe most-famous car¬†in the world‚ÄĚ after its appearance in the 1964 film¬†Goldfinger, springs back to life as Aston Martin creates a limited run of DB5 Goldfinger Continuation cars.

Just 25 of the iconic DB5 coupes will be built, the company says, all in Silver Birch like the original 007 car, and also festooned with working replicas of the spy gadgets that so excited movie audiences of the 1960s.

An aluminum DB5 body under construction

According to Aston Martin, the James Bond equipment includes:

Exterior:
‚Äʬ†Rear smokescreen delivery system.
‚Äʬ†Rear simulated oil-slick delivery system.
‚Äʬ†Revolving number plates front and rear (triple plates).
‚Äʬ†Simulated twin front machine guns.
‚Äʬ†Bullet-resistant rear shield.
‚Äʬ†Battering rams front and rear.
‚Äʬ†Simulated tire slasher.
‚Äʬ†Removable passenger seat roof panel (optional equipment).

Interior:
‚Äʬ†Simulated radar-screen tracker map.
‚Äʬ†Telephone in driver‚Äôs door.
‚Äʬ†Gear knob actuator button.
‚Äʬ†Armrest and center console-mounted switchgear.
‚Äʬ†Under-seat hidden weapons/storage tray.
‚Äʬ†Remote control for gadget activation.

Some of these gadgets will be illegal in many places around the world, with police most likely frowning on such antics as creating smoke screens or firing fake machine guns in traffic.  But still, Bond fans should get plenty of kicks showing them off in the driveway.
‚ÄúEach of the 25 new cars is being built to the highest possible quality¬†using a blend of Sir David Brown-era old world craftsmanship,‚ÄĚ Aston Martin said in a news release, ‚Äúwith the sympathetic application of modern engineering advancements and performance enhancements, alongside the integration of cutting-edge gadgets developed in association with Chris Corbould OBE, the special-effects supervisor who has worked on more than a dozen Bond films.‚ÄĚ

Aston Martin recently began production of the Continuation cars

The DB5 Goldfinger series is part of Aston Martin’s Continuation program that began with the DB4 GT Continuation in 2017, with limited-edition cars hand-built at the premium automaker’s factory in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire.

Most of the DB5 Goldfinger cars have been sold pre-production, with a price tag of around $3.4 million. First deliveries are scheduled for later this year.

There was no word in the news release about one of the most-famous of 007 gadgets, the passenger ejection seat that sent bad guys soaring through the roof.  After the recent management turmoil within the company, that might have been an unwelcome addition.

We are here to help out with summer projects. Now is the time to take care of the deferred maintenance, restoration, preservation, and upgrade needs that are on your car's 'To Do' list! Click here to send an e-mail to dave@...;or just call us;215-257-1202;to schedule an appointment. We expect to be up to full speed next week and we are currently scheduling appointments in late July, It's not too late to plan for repair or restoration work soon, so that you can be enjoying your classic in this summer & fall.

Looks like an oil pressure sending unit to me... either for a gauge or a light.  I don't recall what MGB's had on them, but it looks the part.

Yep.  Seen it before.  It's becoming more and more common as newer-but-inferior (non-Girling/non-Lochkheed) parts are increasingly added to our older cars. Modern rubber bits deteriorate MUCH faster than the older stuff did.  Not sure why, but they definitely do.  Motor mounts, suspension bushings, steering rack gaiters, etc... they're all perishing earlier than the old stuff did.

Jim, I'd take a really hard look at the rubber brake hose going to the caliper that's see-sawing.  You reported brakes pulling to one side, and your report of see-sawing tend to make me think that the brake hose on that see-saw side is plugged.  This happens on older brake hoses where the rubber on the inside of the hose degrades and swells up, effectively plugging itself.  This would prevent proper operation of the caliper on that side (resulting in pulling to one side on braking) and also would prevent fluid from going back to the master cylinder, hence the see-sawing of the pistons.

Kevin McLemore

I’m in need of some help as well....  am attempting to replace brake pads, having never done this before. When braking, the Gimlet was pulling to the left....

When I try to retract the pistons in the calipers with reservoir open, the left caliper allows both pistons to retract but the right caliper see-saws the pistons- retract the inside piston, the outside pistons extends and vice versa. How should a correctly functioning caliper react?  Should I just replace both calipers???

Thanks,

Hi Kevin, thanks for offering to help. I would like to give you a call tomorrow if that's okay.

Jerry, we don’t have a tech forum per se, but a number of folks have skills. If you like, give me a call and we can talk through your issue. My cell is 272, then dial 3320, preceded by area code 215, of course. (Text first, though, so I answer it - I generally ignore unknown calls.)

Hi Steve. I am a newish member to the club and I am wondering if the group has any forums for discussing technical issues. My 77 MGB isn't going into gear and I think it's the clutch master cylinder but it would be helpful to get some expert advice. Thanks! -Jerry
