Train Encyclopedia
csxconrailns@aol.com <csxconrailns@...>
Does anyone have a number one recommendation of a train or locomotive encyclopedia? It can obviously be one out of print, but preferably in print due to the fact that an obsolete one that comes highly recommended will be pricey. Thanks! Andrew

The Car and Locomotive Cyclopedia of American Practice, a specific volume of that year, depending on what locomotive era.

Kalmbach Publishing did a reprint of the 1943 cyclopedia many years ago. I don't know if any are available or not. Perhaps on Ebay.

Steam's Finest Hour by David P Morgan, 1959 is my all-time favorite railroad book. It showcases the best 1, 2 oe 3 (4 for N&W) locomotives of most of the major US, Canadian and Mexican lines. Its focus is on "modern" steam power. Therefore roads like SOU don't make the cut because their steam power was very old compared to others. For each locomotive there is a builder's photo and an action photo. There also is a list of stats for each engine, things such as driver diameter, boiler pressure, cylinder size and tender capacity.
