NOOBS

Wayne Johnson

Hi All,

Let me say at the outset that I am new to this group and New to Raspberry Pi.

As I understand it a Noob is a prewritten file of code that can be loaded into a Pi to control your project.

So is there a Noob for this (PHSNA) project. Being a bit of a slacker, the code that I would need to type in is a bit of a concern to me as I know it would be full of typos in my case.

I understand that a RP is platform intended for S/W writing and experimentation however in my case being an old fashioned Hardware type my interest lies in the construction end of the game.

This looks like an excellent project and one I'm looking forward to getting into.

Thanks in advance

Hi Wayne,

There is very little connection between this project and a Rpi.   Noobs is the basic how to set up an operating system for the Rpi, either Raspian, a version of the main Debian Linux. or other special versions of Linux operating systems mostly aimed at Multimedia. RISC is the odd one out in that it is not derived from Linux.

They have to be special versions to run on the Rpi which uses the Arm processor rather than an Intel or AMD processor of the type used in most computers.

The PHSNA uses an Arduino which is an even smaller processor and board.

The only use of a Desktop or laptop computer is in programming the Arduino at the start and in collecting readings when it does a scan.  There is no special Operating system required for that purpose just an operating system that can run the Arduino IDE (Integrated Development Interface).

A Rpi could be  used to perform the initial programming of the Arduino and to collect readings but it would need to run one of the standard Noobs installed operating systems.

Hope that helps..

Cheers,
Will

There is no typing in of code required, just download and have the Arduino IDE send it to the Arduino.

There are actually two varieties - one runs on the Arduino alone and interfaces to the PC (or other computer, including the RasPi, I suppose) via any serial communications terminal software you choose.

The other variation runs some software on the Arduino but has most of the computing done on a PC Windows application.  Again, no typing of code required.

Yes thanks Will, my mistake, I have been browsing and found other RPi controlled SNA projects and hence the messed up content of my post.
I have the Arduino UNO ( also a Nano) on order along with a AD9850 and I'm on the list for set of boards from Jim, I've built several AD8307 PM so that is not a problem.
Thanks for the reply Will, I'll get my nose into the many posts on here and see if I can get some of it to soak in.

Regards
Wayne

Cheers Nick, yeah this is all starting to fall into place now that I read the notes, I'm looking forward to getting the modules here and get started,
Thanks for your help fellas, much appreciated

You should venture over to the rpi-wobbulator group where we have a project that has been running in parallel with this PHSNA group.  The DDS generator and AD rf detector are driven directly by the RPi,  so no intermediate Arduino.
