100 Days of Gibberish - Trump has Weaponised Nonsense

The Guardian

With only a week left of his first 100 days in office traditionally a milestone for American presidents Donald Trump sat down with the Associated Press to reflect on his accomplishments (sic) and preemptively brag about future ones. This remarkable artefact, a transcript of which AP then released in full, captures, more than any other piece of media (except perhaps Trumps Twitter feed), the unifying ethos of the Trump White House: weaponised nonsense.

.

snip

.

Trump lies relentlessly about his achievements (claiming, for example, that hes mostly there on his 100-day plan, despite appearing not to know what it is), admits he never realised how big a job it is to be president, forgets how many missiles he fired at Syria, even though he got the number right only 17 words earlier, and compares his TV ratings favourably to those for 9/11. In my second favourite moment in the interview the first being when he inexplicably drops the word hamlets Trump describes a meeting with Democratic congressman Elijah Cummings:

.

Well he said, youll be the greatest president in the history of, but you know what, Ill take that also, but that you could be. But he said, will be the greatest president but I would also accept the other. In other words, if you do your job, but I accept that. Then I watched him interviewed and it was like he never even was here. Its incredible. I watched him interviewed a week later and its like he was never in my office. And you can even say that.

.

Cummings remembers the exchange differently, explaining that he told Trump he could be a great president if he stopped doing literally everything that he was doing and started doing other stuff that wasnt horrible instead.

.

snip

.

Whether or not Trump is capable of calculation (and, judging by his largely noun-free syntax in this interview, its debatable), his rhetorical style, untethered from both meaning and reality, serves his agenda well. Language is where we find common ground, where we define ourselves and teach others how to treat us, where we name problems so we can see and fight them. Theres a reason why social justice movements care about things such as pronouns and racial slurs and calling a Nazi a Nazi and saying abortion out loud its the same reason why rightwingers, Trumpists in particular, are so eager to cast language as a frivolous abstraction and any critique as political correctness.

.

Without language, there is no accountability, no standard of truth. If Trump never says anything concrete, he never has to do anything concrete. If Trump never makes a statement of commitment, Trump supporters never have to confront what they really voted for. If his promises are vague to the point of opacity, Trump cannot be criticised for breaking them. If every sloppy lie (ie: Just found out that Obama had my wires tapped in Trump Tower This is McCarthyism!) can be explained away as a generality or just a joke because of quotes, then he can literally say anything with impunity. Trump can rend immigrant families in the name of heart, destroy healthcare in the name of life, purge minority voters in the name of justice, and roll back womens autonomy in the name of freedom. The constitution? Probably sarcastic. There are quotes all over that thing!

Kellyanne Conway Uncorks Her Biggest Lie Yet In Effort To Make Trump Look
Successful

Donald Trump whisperer Kellyanne Conway told Katie Couric "this is the first time since 1881 that a President has had a #SCOTUS justice confirmed in first 100 days."

.

What do you do when your first 100 days are an unmitigated failure of such epic proportions that the media is congratulating you for learning how things work in baby steps?

.

You send Kellyanne out with some alternative facts.

.

And so Kellyanne Conway told Katie Couric this is the first time since 1881 that a President has had a #SCOTUS justice confirmed in first 100 days.

.

Of course Conway doesnt mention that Republicans had to use the nuclear option to get this very extreme Justice confirmed for a seat that Republicans stole from President Obama, after violating all precedent by obstructing his very moderate, non-partisan pick for almost a year for no reason other than they wanted a Republican to fill that seat.

.

Sure, thats not how this is supposed to work, and thats part of what makes Kellyanne Conways claim silly. But even worse is Republicans ruined the Senate, their own words, by using the nuclear option to give Trump this win, by changing the procedural rules so that they could get Gorsuch confirmed with a simple majority of votes (51), rather than the normal supermajority (60) used for a Supreme Court nominee.

.

Theres a reason a Supreme Court nominee is supposed to get 60 votes. If they cant, the President is supposed to nominate someone who can, not change the rules to get his new toy.

.

Getting Gorsuch confirmed in the first 100 days is actually Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnells (R-KY) accomplishment, for if he hadnt obstructed Merrick Garland for nearly 300 days, there wouldnt have been an open seat and if he hadnt changed the senate rules, Gorsuch wouldnt be confirmed.

Republicans Exempt Their Own Insurance
from their Latest Health Care Proposal

House Republicans appear to have included a provision that exempts members of Congress and their staff from their latest health care plan.

.

The new Republican amendment, introduced Tuesday night, would allow states to waive out of Obamacares ban on preexisting conditions. This means that insurers could once again, under certain circumstances, charge sick people higher premiums than healthy people.

.

Republican legislators liked this policy well enough to offer it in a new amendment. They do not, however, seem to like it enough to have it apply to themselves and their staff. A spokesperson for Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-NJ), who authored this amendment, confirmed this was the case: Members of Congress and their staff would get the guarantee of keeping these Obamacare regulations. Health law expert Tim Jost flagged this particular issue to me.

.

A bit of background is helpful here. Obamacare requires all members of Congress and their staff to purchase coverage through the health laws marketplace, just like Obamacare enrollees. The politics of that plank were simple enough, meant to demonstrate that if the coverage in this law were good enough for Americans, it should be good enough for their representatives in Washington.

.

Thats been happening for the past four years now. Fast-forward to this new amendment, which would allow states to waive out of key Obamacare protections like the ban on preexisting conditions or the requirement to cover things like maternity care and mental health services.

.

If congressional aides lived in a state that decided to waive these protections, the aides who were sick could presumably be vulnerable to higher premiums than the aides who are healthy. Their benefits package could get skimpier as Obamacares essential health benefits requirement may no longer apply either.

.

This apparently does not sound appealing, because the Republican amendment includes the members of Congress and their staff as a protected group who cannot be affected by this amendments terms.

I Know the Real Reason Bill O'Reilly was Fired.

Its not about sexual harassment. Its about finances.

Ive been following the news about Bill OReilly and his recent firing intently. The story of a serial harasser who leveraged his workplace power over the people around him is familiar to me.

.

So is the one where the culture of the company allows him to weather the storm around the multiple public lawsuits he was forced to settle, only to be fired when the financial pressure becomes too much to bear. Only in my situation, the accused was proud of what he did. Thats because I worked at American Apparel under its founder and CEO, Dov Charney.

.

Charneys sexual transgressions have been widely documented at this point. Weve all heard the stories of him sending explicit texts and emails to multiple employees, or about the trove of graphic videos and photos of Charney having sex with employees and models saved on a company computer. I can only confirm that these kinds of stories were traded by employees for a long time at the company.

.

But Charney cultivated this environment early on. Workers were vaguely told upfront to expect an unconventional work culture which largely translated to sexual in nature. In order to get hired, employees had to send headshots and full-body photos of ourselves to management. It was widely known that Charney had sexual relationships with plenty of women at the company.

.

In light of the recent news of the Canadian clothing company Gildan buying American Apparel and its decision to shutter every retail location, I sat down and thought about everything I went through. For most of it I was in my early 20s, new to New York, and working enough overtime to enjoy a pretty good life. I came away from my 18 months at American Apparel with plenty of stories, which I still tell today.

.

When I talk about them, my friends remember what the store and company represented. How brazen it was about almost everything. Weve spent nights Googling the most disgusting and offensive ads American Apparel ever put out. We talk about how the company was hit with harassment case after harassment case, but none of it mattered until Charney started to become a problem for the companys bottom line.

.

There are big differences between the American Apparel harassment accusations and what happened at Fox News with OReilly. For one, even though Charney was a fairly high-profile executive, he had nowhere near the fame and popularity OReilly enjoyed as a host on a national news network. Charney was also the CEO and completely in charge of the company until he was terminated in 2014.

.

Still, there are important similarities both men were high-powered figures with multiple harassment cases against them, and both men were not punished for it until they became financial liabilities. Both Fox and American Apparel had cultures of sexual harassment cultivated by powerful men at the top of the food chain. These cultures were widely reported and discussed as an open secret, yet the men at the center of the charges were protected.

.

When I look back at my time at American Apparel, I begin to understand how it was possible that this kind of behavior persisted it was created by the men at the top.

Physical Activity Helps to Counteract Weight Gain
    from Obesity-Causing Gene Variant

Study used meta-analyses that account for physical activity

    .

Physical activity can reduce the weight-gaining effects of the genetic variant that carries the greatest risk of obesity, report Mariaelisa Graff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Tuomas Kilpelnen of University of Copenhagen and colleagues April 27th, 2017 in PLOS Genetics.

    .

With people consuming more calories and being less physically active, the world has witnessed an obesity epidemic, but not everyone is gaining weight. Previous studies suggest that a person's susceptibility to becoming obese can be reduced by physical activity. To see how physical activity and genetic variants related to obesity interact to affect weight gain, Graff and colleagues performed genome-wide interaction meta-analyses using more than 200,000 individuals. They categorized individuals as active or inactive, screened them for about 2.5 million genetic variants and correlated that data with physical indicators of obesity, including body mass index, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio. The study finds that physical activity can reduce the weight-gaining effects of the strongest known genetic risk factor for obesity, the FTO gene, by about 30%. Accounting for physical activity also enabled the researchers to identify 11 novel genetic variants linked to obesity, suggesting that physical activity and other relevant environmental factors should be considered when looking for novel genes.

    .

The meta-analyses confirm previous findings that physical activity reduces the effect of the FTO gene, but the underlying cause of this interaction is still unknown.

(Reuters Health) - Even though heavy adults can be more prone to cardiac problems than their slimmer peers, exercise may lower the odds of heart damage for obese people, a recent study suggests.

    .

Researchers examined data on 9,427 middle-aged people without cardiovascular disease to see how their weight and exercise habits might influence levels of a protein thats a marker of heart damage.

    .

Overall, 7.2 percent of the participants had elevated levels of a protein known as high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT). Rising levels of this protein can be an early warning of future heart failure in people who dont have symptoms.

    .

Compared to non-obese people who got at least 75 minutes of vigorous exercise or 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity each week, sedentary obese people were about 2.5 times more likely to have high levels of this protein, the study found.

    .

But obese people who met the same recommended exercise targets as their non-obese counterparts were only 68 percent more likely to have elevated cardiac troponin T levels.

    .

This suggests that physical activity prevents at least some of the heart damage associated with obesity, said lead study author Dr. Roberta Florido, a cardiovascular health researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

    .

Although the mechanisms underlying this protection are incompletely understood, it is possible that at least part of it involves improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and other metabolic abnormalities that occur with obesity, Florido said by email.

    .

At the start of the study, participants were typically around 60 years old and they tended to be overweight, if not obese.

    .

Researchers counted people as meeting recommended exercise levels based on minimum weekly activity targets set by the American Heart Association: either 150 minutes of moderate or more vigorous activity or at least 75 minutes of intense activity.

Objectives This study sought to evaluate the association of physical activity with chronic myocardial damage, assessed by elevated high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT), in individuals with and without obesity.

Background Physical activity is associated with reduced risk of heart failure (HF), particularly among obese people. The role of chronic myocardial damage in this association is uncertain.

Conclusions Physical activity is inversely associated with chronic subclinical myocardial damage. Physical activity might lessen the association between obesity and subclinical myocardial damage, which could represent a mechanism by which physical activity reduces HF risk.

    The question

    .

Listing all the benefits of exercise takes a long sheet of paper. They include stronger bones and muscles, better weight control, improved mental health, mood enhancement and less risk for heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and some cancers. Do the benefits also include better cognitive functioning after middle age?

    .

    This study

    .

The researchers analyzed data from 39 studies of people 50 and older who had been randomly assigned to a supervised exercise program involving aerobic exercise, resistance training (such as working with weights), a combination of aerobic and resistance, tai chi or yoga, or to a program using a non-exercise alternative. No one was excluded based on cognitive status. All studies measured the effects of exercise on cognition, including attention, executive function (skills that help you get things done) and memory.

    .

Standardized neuropsychological tests showed that, compared with non-exercisers, cognitive functioning improved in those who did aerobic or resistance exercise, regardless of cognitive abilities at the start of the study and including those with mild cognitive impairment. Moderate to vigorous physical exercise for 45 to 60 minutes, no matter how frequent, yielded the greatest benefit. Tai chi also improved cognitive function.

    .

    Who may be affected?

    .

People 50 and older. Everyones brain changes with age, and shrinkage in some areas of the brain can result in memory lapses or difficulty multitasking. The effects vary greatly from person to person. However, research has shown that the brain is capable of regrowth and that an older brain can learn new things, especially with intellectual stimulation.

    Abstract

    Background

Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) results from cerebrovascular disease, and worldwide, it is the second most common type of cognitive dysfunction. While targeted aerobic training is a promising approach to delay the progression of VCI by reducing cardiometabolic risk factors, few randomised controlled trials to date have specifically assessed the efficacy of aerobic training on cognitive and brain outcomes in this group at risk for functional decline.

    Aim

To examine the effect of moderate-intensity aerobic training on executive functions and functional neural activity among older adults with mild subcortical ischaemic VCI (SIVCI).

Summary Aerobic training among older adults with mild SIVCI can improve executive functions and neural efficiency of associated brain areas. Future studies with greater sample size should be completed to replicate and extend these findings.

While targeted aerobic training is a promising approach to delay the progression of VCI by reducing cardiometabolic risk factors, few randomised controlled trials to date have specifically assessed the efficacy of aerobic training on cognitive and brain outcomes in this group at risk for functional decline. To examine the effect of moderate-intensity aerobic training on executive functions and functional neural activity among older adults with mild subcortical ischaemic VCI (SIVCI). Older adults with mild SIVCI were randomly assigned to: (1) 6-month, 3week aerobic training (n=10) or (2) usual care (control; n=11). Participants completed functional MRI (fMRI) at baseline and trial completion. During the fMRI sessions, behavioural performance on the Eriksen flanker task and task-evoked neural activity were assessed. At trial completion, after adjusting for baseline general cognition, total white matter lesion volume and flanker performance, compared with the control group, the aerobic training group significantly improved flanker task reaction time. Moreover, compared with the controls, the aerobic training group demonstrated reduced activation in the left lateral occipital cortex and right superior temporal gyrus. Reduced activity in these brain regions was significantly associated with improved (ie, faster) flanker task performance at trial completion. Aerobic training among older adults with mild SIVCI can improve executive functions and neural efficiency of associated brain areas. Future studies with greater sample size should be completed to replicate and extend these findings.

    Abstract

    Objective

To investigate the effect of FIFA injury prevention programmes in football (FIFA 11 and FIFA 11+).

    Design

    Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Eligibility criteria for selecting studies Randomised controlled trials comparing the FIFA injury prevention programmes with a control (no or sham intervention) among football players.

    Data sources

MEDLINE via PubMed, EMBASE via OVID, CINAHL via Ebsco, Web of Science, SportDiscus and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, from 2004 to 14 March 2016.

    Results

6 cluster-randomised controlled trials had assessed the effect of FIFA injury prevention programmes compared with controls on the overall football injury incidence in recreational/subelite football. These studies included 2 specific exercise-based injury prevention programmes: FIFA 11 (2 studies) and FIFA 11+ (4 studies). The primary analysis showed a reduction in the overall injury risk ratio of 0.75 (95% CI 0.57 to 0.98), p=0.04, in favour of the FIFA injury prevention programmes. Secondary analyses revealed that when pooling the 4 studies applying the FIFA 11+ prevention programme, a reduction in the overall injury risk ratio (incidence rate ratio (IRR) 0.61; 95% CI 0.48 to 0.77, p<0.001) was present in favour of the FIFA 11+ prevention programme. No reduction was present when pooling the 2 studies including the FIFA 11 prevention programme (IRR 0.99; 95% CI 0.80 to 1.23, p=0.940).

    Conclusions

An injury-preventing effect of the FIFA injury prevention programmes compared with controls was shown in football. This effect was induced by the FIFA 11+ prevention programme which has a substantial injury-preventing effect by reducing football injuries by 39%, whereas a preventive effect of the FIFA 11 prevention programme could not be documented.

    Trial registration number PROSPERO CRD42015024120.

The Kochs Have Already Spent Over $3 Millio
    Lobbying for Trump's Anti-Environmental Agenda

Fossil fuel spending swamps environmental efforts.

    Think Progress

    https://thinkprogress.org/fossil-fuel-q-1-2017-lobbying-b99a40461293

    .

    .

New filings indicate that Koch Industries, the primary company of petrochemical billionaires Charles and David Koch, spent $3.1 million on congressional lobbying efforts in the first quarter of 2017, according to its disclosure report. Much of that money went towards anti-environmental initiatives, where the Kochs have found an ally in the new president.
Lobbyists for Koch Industries worked on convincing congress to repeal the renewable fuel standard; to repeal requirements for vehicle efficiency, known as the CAFE standards; to repeal a Clean Air Act provision to decrease the risk of chemical accidents; to stymie the Clean Power Plan, an EPA rule to reduce carbon emissions from power plants; and on various budgetary allocations.

    .

In addition, the company lobbied senators to confirm former Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt as head of the Environmental Protection Agency. Pruitt is just one of several cabinet members with ties to fossil fuels.

    .

The dirtiest corporate polluters in the country spent big to get a cabinet that puts their profits before the health of the public, and they are getting what they paid for, the Sierra Clubs Adam Beitman told ThinkProgress.

    .

The Koch brothers declined to back now-President Trump during the election, but it seems that now they are finding significant overlap between Trumps anti-environmental agenda, including getting rid of the Clean Power Plan and rolling back regulations, and the Koch brothers top agenda items.

    .

Koch Industries wasnt the only fossil fuel company to spend significantly on lobbyists in the first quarter of the year. The American Petroleum Institute, which represents the oil and natural gas industries, spent an additional $2.7 million in the first quarter of the year. ExxonMobil spent $3.4 million; Shell Oil Company spent $2.3 million; Chevron spent $3.3 million; and BP spent $1.7 million. In contrast, the Sierra Club spent $290,000, the most out of any of the Big Green groups.

    .

Overall, the interests of the environment are significantly less represented than the interests of the fossil fuel industries. The Outdoor Industry Association, whose members depend on a healthy environment, spent only $80,000, while the American Wind Energy Association spent $170,000 during the same time period. SolarCity, the biggest residential solar installer in the United States, spent $190,000.

    .

But the fossil fuel industry is notorious for its outsized??and effective??lobbying efforts. According to analysis by Oil Change International, the oil and gas industry gets $119 in tax breaks and other benefits for every $1 it spends on Congress.

    the e-mail newsletter accompanying the
Resources for the Teaching of Social Psychology website at
    http://jfmueller.faculty.noctrl.edu/crow

Monthly or Weekly?  Monthly it will remain.  More than two-thirds of respondents to the survey said they preferred that I
continue to send out the Newsletter on a monthly schedule.  Thanks for all who responded.

Excellent new video resource!  Subscriber Steven Ross has created a YouTube channel in which he has organized an already
large number of video clips from TV shows, movies, ads, and other sources for many of areas of psychology.  Social
psychology is well represented.  If you select a video clip on a topic such as fear appeal, as I did, not only does that
first ad using fear appeal play, but the other fear appeal ads play right after it in succession, which is very convenient
in the classroom.  Go to Playlists to see the different categories of videos. Check out the resource and suggest additional
videos at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM_2SK06o4LrNTconbSUUkw   Thanks, Steven.  Oh, and enjoy the introductory song!

Corruption In Action: Koch Brothers Position Themselves
    For Mar-a-Lago Chat With Trump

This Makes a Mockery of Trumps Pledge to Drain the Washington Swamp.

Politico reports that on Saturday night Donald Trump had a friendly chat at his Mar-a-Lago resort with conservative mega-donor David Koch and his brother William Koch, both heirs to the giant Koch Industries chemical and fossil fuel conglomerate.

    .

It seems the Koch boys just happened to be having dinner at Trumps club with conservative publisher Christopher Ruddy, who, as numerous media reports have documented, is very friendly with Trump and often provides reporters with insights into the new POTUSs thinking.

    .

The incident illustrates perfectly the extreme strain of kleptocratic corruption that Trump has brought to the White House, making a mockery of his pledge to drain the Washington swamp.

    .

David Koch surely realizes that if he spends his time and money at Trumps club, enriching Trump, he becomes like Lana Turner at the Hollywood malt shop, primed to be discovered. If he pals around with his estranged brother William, a Mar-a-Lago member ($200,000 annual fee), and with a Trump associate like Ruddy, he gets an even better chance of face time with the president; David learned his lesson in December, when he tried to play golf on Trumps West Palm Beach course with an undesirable, Trump biographer Harry Hurt, and Trump had Hurt ejected.

    .

    snip

    .

But so far the Kochs are doing well with the Trump administration, getting what they want on the issues that matter most to them: rolling back the efforts of previous administrations to protect our country against toxic pollution, chemical plant dangers, and global warming. With fossil fuel industry lackey and Koch fan Scott Pruitt in charge of the EPA, no doubt the Kochs are salivating over the opportunity to destroy environmental regulation for the rest of their lives

'This Is Exactly What We Mean When We Talk About Oligarchy'

    EcoWatch

    http://www.ecowatch.com/koch-pruitt-epa-lobbying-2379773655.html

    .

    .

Despite the numerous controversies and vocal opposition swirling around President Donald Trump's pick to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Senators voted 52 to 46, largely along party lines, in February to confirm Oklahoma Republican Scott Pruitt as EPA administrator.

    .

It now appears that Koch Industriesthe oil and gas conglomerate owned by billionaire brothers Charles and David Kochdirectly lobbied Congress to confirm Pruitt and spent millions to influence anti-environmental initiatives, a disclosure report shows.

    .

    As The Intercept reported:

    .

"The firm's latest disclosure form reports that its in-house corporate lobbying team spent $3.1 million to influence lawmakers over the first three months of the year on a variety of issues affecting its bottom line, including the EPA's Clean Power Rule on carbon emissions, carbon pricing, the Clean Air Act and 'nominations for various positions at the Department of Energy.'"

    .

"This is exactly what we mean when we talk about oligarchy. Multi-billionaires and corporations should not have the power to pick and choose who is in charge of our federal agencies," Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said in response to The Intercept's report. "But that is exactly what happenedKoch Industries spent millions on lobbying Congress to confirm Scott Pruitt, our head of the Environmental Protection Agency who doesn't believe in environmental protection."

    .

Koch Industries has contributed $38.5 million to federal candidates over the last 25 years and spent another $117 million since 1998 on lobbying. DeSmog reported in February that the company's deep pockets are contributing campaign funds to four GOP representatives who have introduced legislation to completely abolish the EPA.

    .

Sanders, who grilled Pruitt during the confirmation hearings, has been outspoken in his criticism of Pruitt as well as the Trump administration's generally dismissive attitude towards climate change.

    .

"It's clear that Trump doesn't represent working families. His agenda benefits the Koch brothers and their billionaire [friends]. Our job is to stand together to defeat the drift toward oligarchy and create a vibrant democracynot one controlled by corporate interests," Sanders said.

    .

Pruitt has reported ties to the fossil fuel industry and he repeatedly sued the EPA when he was Oklahoma Attorney General.

Donald Trump's Environmental Agenda at 100 Days: Lazy and Plutocratic

No serious accomplishments or coherent philosophy,
    just favors for fossil fuels.

Donald Trump has been in office long enough now to make his leadership style clear. Theres the chaos and daily mini scandals, the rumors and intrigues, the bewildering fire hose of clickbait, yes. But in terms of actual governance, what Trump has done so far can be summed up in two words: lazy and plutocratic.

    .

Trump has always been a performer above all, hungry for approval and ratings. He was performing throughout his candidacy and seems interested mostly in performing the presidency. That is very, very different from being a good president.

    .

Effective presidential leadership often involves working behind the scenes and allowing others (deputies, members of Congress, interested constituencies) to take the credit. But there is no scene Trump wants to be behind. He wants to be in front, getting the credit, unless something goes wrong, in which case he gropes immediately for a scapegoat. Not surprisingly, he has thus far proven abysmal at accomplishing anything that requires trust, cooperation, or consensus witness health care. Trump is (oh, the irony) a truly terrible negotiator.

    .

Thats why the section on legislation in Trumps much-touted list of accomplishments is devoid of significant achievements, full of joint resolutions and reversals (through the Congressional Review Act) of minor Obama regulations.

    .

Major legislation requires patience and persistence. Trump has none of those. So instead, the vast bulk of his action has come in the form of executive orders, which amount to declarations that his administration intends to do something. As Jonathan Chait says, this amounts to making America great again by signing pieces of paper asking people who work for him whether they have any ideas how to make America great again.

    .

All these EOs may one day result in serious damage, but in terms of substantive changes, so far theres much more Trump sizzle than Trump steak.

    .

The other theme of the Trump presidency is the utter collapse of any remaining intellectual infrastructure on the right. There is no apparent governing philosophy at work in economic and environmental policy, just a careening and unpredictable combination of populist theater and naked plutocracy. For Trumps supporters in industry, it is wish-list time literally, the administration is asking industry groups for lists of regulations they want reversed. If Trump has an overarching take on government, its that government is a tool that allows him to dispense favors to loyal constituencies in exchange for good ratings.

    .

Lets take a look at how these themes have played out in environmental policy.
