U.N. To Pull Controversial Peacekeepers From Haiti

April 22, 20177:00 AM ET

Jason Beaubien

NPR

http://tinyurl.com/mmmuyuw

To say that the U.N.'s peacekeeping mission in Haiti has been controversial
is an understatement.

The peacekeepers are blamed for bringing cholera to the island nation for the first time.

They were accused of sexually abusing locals. Haitians have accused them
of being an occupying army.

But the peacekeepers also have been credited with bringing a measure of stability
to one of the most impoverished, unstable nations in the hemisphere.

And now, after 13 years, the end of the mission is in sight.

PogoFrog.com, a Medical Research Engine for Physicians, was launched after extensive
observation of physician web searching practices. Physicians use the internet regularly to
research varied healthcare subjects.

Studies have shown that physicians rarely find links to credible medical information on the
first few pages of a keyword search when using the popular consumer search engines.
In fact, they often must search through dozens of results pages before finding the credible
medical information they need.

The first several pages of results returned by consumer search engines often include links to
attorneys, personal blogs or alternative medicine sites. Physicians must evaluate the credibility
of these sites by a quick glance of the headings.

PogoFrog.com is a custom search engine that jumps over these layman-focused sites and returns
only credible medical site links on the first results page and on every results page.
This is done by specifically excluding consumer sites and specifically including only credible
healthcare sites such as FDA.gov, peer-review journal sites, association sites and others.

While it's no secret that the ice on Earth's poles is melting, scientists are still learning about how rapidly these changes are happening.

.

Now a new study of water across the surface of Antarctica finds that the melting is occurring to a greater degree than previously thought.

.

This study tells us theres already a lot more melting going on than we thought, co-author Robin Bell told Columbia University's Earth Institute last week in a press release about the study. When you turn up the temperature, its only going to increase.

.

Researchers from Columbias Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory conducted the study and published their findings in the journal Nature on Wednesday,

.

The scientists "found extensive drainages of meltwater" flowing in parts of Antarctica where they did not expect to find it, according to the Earth Institute's press release.

.

Video provided by the Earth Institute, shows a 400-foot-wide waterfall draining a steady flow of turquoise water off the Nansen ice shelf and into the ocean.

.

The Nansen ice shelf, which is on the southern side of the continent, is a mammoth glacier that stretches about 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, according to Geographic Names and Information Systems.

.

This is not in the future this is widespread now and has been for decades, glaciologist Jonathan Kingslake told the Earth Institute. I think most polar scientists have considered water moving across the surface of Antarctica to be extremely rare. But we found a lot of it, over very large areas.

Sean Hannity Accused Of Sexual Harassment

The Fox News host categorically denies the claim.

Sean Hannity is the latest Fox News star to be accused of sexual harassment.

.

In an interview with the Pat Campbell Show on Friday, former Fox News contributor Debbie Schlussel claimed that Hannity had invited her to his hotel room twice when they appeared together for one of his programs. But when she rebuffed him, Schlussel said that she was never asked back on the show.

.

Schlussel claimed the awkward incident began when Hannity invited her to a store where he was signing books. While there, she said Hannity asked her: Why dont you come back with me to my hotel? Schlussel said she responded: No, I have to get ready for the show.

.

Schlussel said Hannity pressed her again to come to his hotel room after the show taping, which did not go well. She refused.

.

I wasnt booked on his show again, and he called me and yelled at me, Schlussel said. It was made clear to me that I didnt go back to his hotel with him after. I got a very weird feeling about the whole thing, and I kind of knew I wouldnt be back on his show.

.

She added: This kind of stuff is all over the place at Fox News and anything that has to do with Sean Hannity.

.

Her comments were aired just days after Bill OReillys ouster by Fox News in the wake of revelations that he and the company had paid out some $13 million to women who accused him of sexual harassment.

.

Fox News provided a statement to The Huffington Post from Hannity who said that Schlussels claims were 100 percent false and a complete fabrication. He called her a serial harasser who has been lying about me for well over a decade, and threatened to sue her using a team of some of the finest and toughest lawyers in the country.

.

Hannity also characterized Schlussels comments as part of a coordinated effort afoot to now silence those with conservative views.

.

Schlussel, however, is a conservative. One sign of her politics was her repeated and false claim beginning in 2006 that President Barack Obama was a Muslim, insisting: Once a Muslim, always a Muslim.

State Department, U.S. Embassies Promoted Trump's Mar-A-Lago

President Donald Trump isnt the only one promoting his private Mar-a-Lago club as the winter White House. His foreign policy team has gotten in on it too.

.

The State Department and at least two U.S. embassies the United Kingdom and Albania earlier this month circulated a 400-word blog post detailing the long history of the presidents South Florida club, which has been open to dues-paying members since the mid-1990s and is now used by Trump for frequent weekend getaways. He has hosted foreign leaders there twice.

.

The blog post written by the State Department-managed site Share America described the dream deferred when Mar-a-Lagos original builder, Marjorie Merriweather Post, willed the property to the federal government upon her death in 1973, with the stipulation it be used as a winter retreat for the president.

.

Her plan didnt work, however, the posts author, Leigh Hartman, wrote, explaining how the government returned the property to Posts trust because it cost too much money to maintain. Trump bought the property and its furniture in 1985, and he opened it a decade later as a private club.

.

Posts dream of a winter White House came true with Trumps election in 2016, Hartman wrote.

.

Share America removed the post on Monday after the State Departments efforts to share the article originally published just before Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping at Mar-a-Lago drew criticism. "The intention of the article was to inform the public about where the President has been hosting world leaders. We regret any misperception and have removed the post," read a statement on the site in place of the post.

Mar-a-Lago: The Winter White House

Mar-a-Lago, President Trumps Florida estate, has become well known as the president frequently travels there to work or host foreign leaders.

.

The first meeting between Trump and President Xi Jinping of China will take place April 67 at Mar-a-Lago, which is located at the heart of Floridas Palm Beach community.

.

Trump is not the first president to have access to Mar-a-Lago as a Florida retreat, but he is the first one to use it. By visiting this winter White House, Trump is belatedly fulfilling the dream of Mar-a-Lagos original owner and designer.

.

When socialite and cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post built Mar-a-Lago Spanish for Sea to Lake in 1927, she spared no expense. The 114-room mansion sits on 8 hectares of land, with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and an inland waterway on the other.

.

The ornate Jazz Age house was designed with Old-World Spanish, Venetian and Portuguese influences and decorated with Posts personal collection of antiques.

A dream deferred

.

Mar-a-Lago was designated a National Historic Site in 1969 in recognition of its design and architecture. Three years later it was entered into the National Register of Historic Places, a list of sites the U.S. deems worthy of preservation.

.

But Post had even bigger plans for her Palm Beach home. Upon her death in 1973, she willed the estate to the U.S. government, intending it to be used as a winter White House for the U.S. president to entertain visiting foreign dignitaries.

.

.

After refurbishing the house and adding an events space, Trump opened the estate to dues-paying members of the public in 1995 as the Mar-a-Lago Club.

Judge Blocks Trump Effort to Withhold Money From Sanctuary Cities

By VIVIAN YEE

.

A judge in San Francisco on Tuesday temporarily blocked President Trumps efforts to starve localities of federal funds when they limit their cooperation with immigration enforcement, a stinging rejection of his threats to make so-called sanctuary cities fall in line.

.

The judge, William H. Orrick of United States District Court, wrote that the president had overstepped his powers with his January executive order on immigration by tying billions of dollars in federal funding to immigration enforcement. Judge Orrick said only Congress could place such conditions on spending.

.

The ruling, which applies nationwide, was another judicial setback for the Trump administration, which has now seen three immigration orders stopped by federal courts in its first 100 days. And as with the rulings halting his two temporary bans on travel from several predominantly Muslim countries, the presidents own words were used against him.

.

Though Justice Department lawyers argued in the case that the government did not intend to withhold significant amounts of money, the judge noted that the president and Attorney General Jeff Sessions had suggested the punishment could be far greater.

.

If there was doubt about the scope of the order, the president and attorney general have erased it with their public comments, Judge Orrick wrote.

.

While the order is only a temporary injunction until the judge issues a broader ruling on the executive orders constitutionality, he strongly signaled that San Francisco and Santa Clara County, the plaintiffs in the case, were likely to win a permanent victory. It was also an early verdict on the question of whether the White House can coerce cities and counties into helping federal immigration agents detain and deport immigrants who are not authorized to be in the country.

.

Mr. Trump has criticized judges who have ruled against him, and late Tuesday night the White House released a statement saying, Once again, a single district judge this time in San Francisco has ignored federal immigration law to set a new immigration policy for the entire country.

.

Exactly what makes a city or county a sanctuary is a matter of interpretation, but most that present themselves as sanctuaries, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Houston, limit how much they cooperate with federal immigration authorities, often by refusing to turn over unauthorized immigrants from local jails except under certain conditions or by preventing local police officers from asking about immigration status.

.

In San Franciscos case, the city argued that the executive order violated the Constitution by essentially trying to commandeer state and local officials to enforce federal immigration law. In practical terms, San Franciscos filing said, forcing the city to cooperate with federal immigration agents would threaten public safety by breaking trust between local authorities and immigrants, who the city argued would become less likely to report crimes or serve as witnesses.

.

The city estimated that it stood to lose more than $1 billion in federal funding as a result of the executive order. Santa Clara said about $1.7 billion, or more than a third of its revenue, was at risk.

100 Days of Gibberish - Trump has Weaponised Nonsense

Lindy West

Tuesday 25 April 2017 08.09 EDT

The Guardian

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/apr/25/ trump-100-days-gibberish-weaponised-white-house-language-presidency

.

.

.

With only a week left of his first 100 days in office traditionally a milestone for American presidents Donald Trump sat down with the Associated Press to reflect on his accomplishments (sic) and preemptively brag about future ones. This remarkable artefact, a transcript of which AP then released in full, captures, more than any other piece of media (except perhaps Trumps Twitter feed), the unifying ethos of the Trump White House: weaponised nonsense.

.

snip

.

Trump lies relentlessly about his achievements (claiming, for example, that hes mostly there on his 100-day plan, despite appearing not to know what it is), admits he never realised how big a job it is to be president, forgets how many missiles he fired at Syria, even though he got the number right only 17 words earlier, and compares his TV ratings favourably to those for 9/11. In my second favourite moment in the interview the first being when he inexplicably drops the word hamlets Trump describes a meeting with Democratic congressman Elijah Cummings:

.

Well he said, youll be the greatest president in the history of, but you know what, Ill take that also, but that you could be. But he said, will be the greatest president but I would also accept the other. In other words, if you do your job, but I accept that. Then I watched him interviewed and it was like he never even was here. Its incredible. I watched him interviewed a week later and its like he was never in my office. And you can even say that.

.

Cummings remembers the exchange differently, explaining that he told Trump he could be a great president if he stopped doing literally everything that he was doing and started doing other stuff that wasnt horrible instead.

.

snip

.

Whether or not Trump is capable of calculation (and, judging by his largely noun-free syntax in this interview, its debatable), his rhetorical style, untethered from both meaning and reality, serves his agenda well. Language is where we find common ground, where we define ourselves and teach others how to treat us, where we name problems so we can see and fight them. Theres a reason why social justice movements care about things such as pronouns and racial slurs and calling a Nazi a Nazi and saying abortion out loud its the same reason why rightwingers, Trumpists in particular, are so eager to cast language as a frivolous abstraction and any critique as political correctness.

.

Without language, there is no accountability, no standard of truth. If Trump never says anything concrete, he never has to do anything concrete. If Trump never makes a statement of commitment, Trump supporters never have to confront what they really voted for. If his promises are vague to the point of opacity, Trump cannot be criticised for breaking them. If every sloppy lie (ie: Just found out that Obama had my wires tapped in Trump Tower This is McCarthyism!) can be explained away as a generality or just a joke because of quotes, then he can literally say anything with impunity. Trump can rend immigrant families in the name of heart, destroy healthcare in the name of life, purge minority voters in the name of justice, and roll back womens autonomy in the name of freedom. The constitution? Probably sarcastic. There are quotes all over that thing!

Kellyanne Conway Uncorks Her Biggest Lie Yet In Effort To Make Trump Look
Successful

Donald Trump whisperer Kellyanne Conway told Katie Couric "this is the first time since 1881 that a President has had a #SCOTUS justice confirmed in first 100 days."

.

What do you do when your first 100 days are an unmitigated failure of such epic proportions that the media is congratulating you for learning how things work in baby steps?

.

You send Kellyanne out with some alternative facts.

.

And so Kellyanne Conway told Katie Couric this is the first time since 1881 that a President has had a #SCOTUS justice confirmed in first 100 days.

.

Of course Conway doesnt mention that Republicans had to use the nuclear option to get this very extreme Justice confirmed for a seat that Republicans stole from President Obama, after violating all precedent by obstructing his very moderate, non-partisan pick for almost a year for no reason other than they wanted a Republican to fill that seat.

.

Sure, thats not how this is supposed to work, and thats part of what makes Kellyanne Conways claim silly. But even worse is Republicans ruined the Senate, their own words, by using the nuclear option to give Trump this win, by changing the procedural rules so that they could get Gorsuch confirmed with a simple majority of votes (51), rather than the normal supermajority (60) used for a Supreme Court nominee.

.

Theres a reason a Supreme Court nominee is supposed to get 60 votes. If they cant, the President is supposed to nominate someone who can, not change the rules to get his new toy.

.

Getting Gorsuch confirmed in the first 100 days is actually Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnells (R-KY) accomplishment, for if he hadnt obstructed Merrick Garland for nearly 300 days, there wouldnt have been an open seat and if he hadnt changed the senate rules, Gorsuch wouldnt be confirmed.

Republicans Exempt Their Own Insurance
from their Latest Health Care Proposal

House Republicans appear to have included a provision that exempts members of Congress and their staff from their latest health care plan.

.

The new Republican amendment, introduced Tuesday night, would allow states to waive out of Obamacares ban on preexisting conditions. This means that insurers could once again, under certain circumstances, charge sick people higher premiums than healthy people.

.

Republican legislators liked this policy well enough to offer it in a new amendment. They do not, however, seem to like it enough to have it apply to themselves and their staff. A spokesperson for Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-NJ), who authored this amendment, confirmed this was the case: Members of Congress and their staff would get the guarantee of keeping these Obamacare regulations. Health law expert Tim Jost flagged this particular issue to me.

.

A bit of background is helpful here. Obamacare requires all members of Congress and their staff to purchase coverage through the health laws marketplace, just like Obamacare enrollees. The politics of that plank were simple enough, meant to demonstrate that if the coverage in this law were good enough for Americans, it should be good enough for their representatives in Washington.

.

Thats been happening for the past four years now. Fast-forward to this new amendment, which would allow states to waive out of key Obamacare protections like the ban on preexisting conditions or the requirement to cover things like maternity care and mental health services.

.

If congressional aides lived in a state that decided to waive these protections, the aides who were sick could presumably be vulnerable to higher premiums than the aides who are healthy. Their benefits package could get skimpier as Obamacares essential health benefits requirement may no longer apply either.

.

This apparently does not sound appealing, because the Republican amendment includes the members of Congress and their staff as a protected group who cannot be affected by this amendments terms.

I Worked under a Serial Sexual Harasser.
I Know the Real Reason Bill O'Reilly was Fired.

Its not about sexual harassment. Its about finances.

Ive been following the news about Bill OReilly and his recent firing intently. The story of a serial harasser who leveraged his workplace power over the people around him is familiar to me.

.

So is the one where the culture of the company allows him to weather the storm around the multiple public lawsuits he was forced to settle, only to be fired when the financial pressure becomes too much to bear. Only in my situation, the accused was proud of what he did. Thats because I worked at American Apparel under its founder and CEO, Dov Charney.

.

Charneys sexual transgressions have been widely documented at this point. Weve all heard the stories of him sending explicit texts and emails to multiple employees, or about the trove of graphic videos and photos of Charney having sex with employees and models saved on a company computer. I can only confirm that these kinds of stories were traded by employees for a long time at the company.

.

But Charney cultivated this environment early on. Workers were vaguely told upfront to expect an unconventional work culture which largely translated to sexual in nature. In order to get hired, employees had to send headshots and full-body photos of ourselves to management. It was widely known that Charney had sexual relationships with plenty of women at the company.

.

In light of the recent news of the Canadian clothing company Gildan buying American Apparel and its decision to shutter every retail location, I sat down and thought about everything I went through. For most of it I was in my early 20s, new to New York, and working enough overtime to enjoy a pretty good life. I came away from my 18 months at American Apparel with plenty of stories, which I still tell today.

.

When I talk about them, my friends remember what the store and company represented. How brazen it was about almost everything. Weve spent nights Googling the most disgusting and offensive ads American Apparel ever put out. We talk about how the company was hit with harassment case after harassment case, but none of it mattered until Charney started to become a problem for the companys bottom line.

.

There are big differences between the American Apparel harassment accusations and what happened at Fox News with OReilly. For one, even though Charney was a fairly high-profile executive, he had nowhere near the fame and popularity OReilly enjoyed as a host on a national news network. Charney was also the CEO and completely in charge of the company until he was terminated in 2014.

.

Still, there are important similarities both men were high-powered figures with multiple harassment cases against them, and both men were not punished for it until they became financial liabilities. Both Fox and American Apparel had cultures of sexual harassment cultivated by powerful men at the top of the food chain. These cultures were widely reported and discussed as an open secret, yet the men at the center of the charges were protected.

.

When I look back at my time at American Apparel, I begin to understand how it was possible that this kind of behavior persisted it was created by the men at the top.
