Bill OReilly Is Forced Out at Fox News

By EMILY STEEL and MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT

Bill OReillys reign as the top-rated host in cable news came to an abrupt and embarrassing end on Wednesday as Fox News forced him out after the disclosure of a series of sexual harassment allegations against him and an internal investigation that turned up even more.

.

Mr. OReilly and his employers came under intense pressure after an article by The New York Times on April 1 revealed how Fox News and its parent company, 21st Century Fox, had repeatedly stood by him even as he and the company reached settlements with five women who had complained about sexual harassment or other inappropriate behavior by him. The agreements totaled about $13 million.

.

Since then, more than 50 advertisers had abandoned his show, and womens rights groups had called for him to be fired. Inside the company, women expressed outrage and questioned whether top executives were serious about maintaining a culture based on trust and respect, as they had promised last summer when another sexual harassment scandal led to the ouster of Roger E. Ailes as chairman of Fox News.

.

That left Mr. OReillys fate in the hands of the Murdoch family, which controls 21st Century Fox. In the end, according to two people familiar with the decision, Rupert Murdoch and his sons, James and Lachlan, made their call after reviewing the results of an internal investigation that found that multiple women had reported inappropriate behavior by Mr. OReilly.

.

After a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the company and Bill OReilly have agreed that Bill OReilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel, 21st Century Fox said in a statement.

.

During an appearance at an event in New York on Wednesday evening, James Murdoch stopped to answer a question about the decision, saying: We did a thorough investigation, a thorough review, and we reached a conclusion. Everything that we said in our statement is all you need to know.

.

For a generation of conservative-leaning Fox News viewers, Mr. OReilly, 67, was a populist voice who railed against what they viewed as the politically correct message of a lecturing liberal media. Defiantly proclaiming his show a No Spin Zone, he produced programming infused with patriotism and a scorn for feminists and movements like The War on Christmas, which became one of his signature themes.

.

snip

.

In a statement later in the day, Mr. OReilly praised Fox News but said it was tremendously disheartening that we part ways due to completely unfounded claims.

.

But that is the unfortunate reality many of us in the public eye must live with today, he said. I will always look back on my time at Fox with great pride in the unprecedented success we achieved and with my deepest gratitude to all my dedicated viewers. I wish only the best for Fox News Channel.

.

Mr. OReillys departure is the latest development in a tumultuous nine months at Fox News. In the aftermath of Mr. Ailess dismissal in July, the Murdochs pledged to clean up the networks culture. But since then, it has been hit with new sexual harassment allegations, and female staff members said they remained fearful of reporting inappropriate behavior.

.

Mr. OReillys dismissal was hailed by womens rights activists and some inside the company as a sign that the network, and perhaps corporate culture at large, was finally taking the issue of sexual harassment seriously.

Controversy Has Always Hovered over O'Reilly's Career

Even before the latest sexual harassment charges ended his career at Fox News, Bill OReilly had always been a magnet for squabbles and distractions.

.

Over the years, hes faced charges of domestic abuse, accusations of numerous racist or racially insensitive statements, a custody battle, spats with colleagues over work credit and allegations of inaccuracies in reporting and tyrannical behavior on the job.

.

The fact that hes carved out a lucrative 21-year run at Fox News and honed his brand to become arguably the most influential right-wing pundit, despite the controversies, speaks to his appeal as a TV showman. His show, The O'Reilly Factor, garnered top ratings for his time slot on prime time and until the controversy, helped to contribute to Fox News' massive profit, said to about $1 billion a year.

.

But the 67-year-olds tenure with Fox came to an abrupt close Wednesday. In a brief statement, 21st Century Fox, the parent company of Fox News, said, After a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the Company and Bill OReilly have agreed that Bill OReilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel.

.

The confirmation comes hours after New York magazines Gabriel Sherman reported that top executives of 21st Century Fox had decided to fire OReilly, and were going over a list of replacements.

.

The discussions, likely including Rupert Murdoch, 21st Century Fox chairman, and his sons, James and Lachlan Murdoch, followed a blistering New York Times report this month that detailed allegations of OReillys inappropriate behavior toward female colleagues. Fox and OReilly paid five women about $13 million in total in exchange for agreements to not sue or speak about the allegations.

.

OReilly and his lawyer have denied that he acted inappropriately.

.

In 2004, OReilly and a former producer of his show were involved in a heated legal battle, in which he alleged extortion. In seeking $60 million in damages, Andrea Mackris, the producer, claimed that OReilly had made lewd and offensive comments in phone conversations. They eventually settled the lawsuits later that year.

.

Last year, Fox News founder Roger Ailes was fired following a lawsuit by former Fox News broadcaster Gretchen Carlson. It was soon revealed that Fox News also settled a sexual harassment claim against O'Reilly made by former Fox broadcaster Juliet Huddy, who also alleged a lewd phone call made by OReilly.

.

Andrea Tantaros, another former Fox News broadcaster, also filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Fox News and said O'Reilly made sexually suggestive comments to her.

.

Still, OReilly seemed immune to the house-cleaning and changing-of-the-culture at Fox News, which was promised by the Murdoch family after Ailes departure. At least until the April report by the Times, few believed the company would kick out its most treasured asset who had come to embody the networks and for that matter, much of right-wing America's disdain for political correctness, full-throated promotion of traditional values and a feverish embrace of hawkish politics and the military.

Primary Sources on Copyright (1450-1900)

http://copy.law.cam.ac.uk/cam/index.php

"This is a digital archive of primary sources on copyright from the invention of the printing press
(c. 1450) to the Berne Convention (1886) and beyond. The UK Arts and Humanities Research Council
(AHRC) funded the initial phase (completed in 2008) focusing on key materials from Renaissance Italy
(Venice, Rome), France, the German speaking countries, Britain and the United States.

We are now adding materials from other countries. Primary sources from Spain were published in 2012,
and the Netherlands will follow in 2014. Using the archive for the first time? A possible starting point is here.

For each of the geographical zones/jurisdictions, a national editor has taken responsibility for selecting,
sourcing, transcribing, translating and commenting documents. These include privileges, statutes, judicial
decisions, contracts and materials relating to legislative history, but also contemporary letters, essays,
treatises and artefacts.

The national editors’ brief was to limit the selection to 50 core documents for Germany, France, Britain and
Spain, and to 20 core documents for Italy and the US (these covering only a shorter period). However, the
editors have sourced many more contextual documents which are fully catalogued, and linked to the core
materials. Document selection has been scrutinised by an international advisory board."

Bibliography of Typography and Printing

This is my personal list of recommended books on Typography and Printing,

chosen to help the student, amateur printer, and the professional graphic

artist learn more about type and design. I have selected these books

because I think they are the best books on Typography and Book design, the

most interesting books on Printing and Typography, and the most useful

books on Typography and Printing. I've thrown in my favorite books on

printing types and the history of printing, too. I've read all these books

and I'd be happy to answer questions about them if I can help.

Primary Sources on Copyright (1450-1900)

"This is a digital archive of primary sources on copyright from the invention of the printing press (c.

Primary sources from Spain were published in 2012, and the Netherlands will follow in 2014. Using the archive for the first time? A possible starting point is here.

For each of the geographical zones / jurisdictions, a national editor has taken responsibility for selecting, sourcing, transcribing, translating and commenting documents. These include privileges, statutes, judicial decisions, contracts and materials relating to legislative history, but also contemporary letters, essays,
treatises and artefacts.

The national editors’ brief was to limit the selection to 50 core documents for Germany, France, Britain and Spain, and to 20 core documents for Italy and the US (these covering only a shorter period). However, the editors have sourced many more contextual documents which are fully catalogued, and linked to the core
materials. Document selection has been scrutinised by an international advisory board."

Bibliography of Typography and Printing

This is my personal list of recommended books on Typography and Printing,
chosen to help the student, amateur printer, and the professional graphic

artist learn more about type and design. I have selected these books because I think they are the best books on Typography and Book design, the most interesting books on Printing and Typography, and the most useful books on Typography and Printing. I've thrown in my favorite books on printing types and the history of printing, too. I've read all these books and I'd be happy to answer questions about them if I can help.

The Evolution of the Modern Book:
Understanding the Future of the Printed Word
in the Context of Fine Printing Presses and Artists Books
Elisabeth Schyberg
Sound Ideas

From the Abstract:

"In this digital age, it is easy to predict that print is dead and soon people will be reading nothing but e-books. I wanted to explore the world of fine printing presses and artists’ books, where print is still very much alive, to see what this sector thinks about the future of the physical book. I visited several fine presses and book artists in Northern California and England, as well as some libraries with unique examples of these kinds of books. I read books and articles about the place of the physical book in today’s society. My initial thought was that people who are involved in the process of making books that are works of art will feel very strongly about e-books and the encroachment of technology into the printed world. However, I found a much more varied response than I was expecting: after the press visits and reading relevant literature, there is no overwhelming outcry against e-books from those who love the physical book. Rather, some who spend their lives with books have realized the benefits of e-books and have embraced their possibilities, while others see fine press books and e-books coexisting side by side indefinitely because of their vast disparities."

Primary Sources on Copyright (1450-1900)

"This is a digital archive of primary sources on copyright from the invention of the printing press (c.

Rather, some who spend their lives with books have realized the benefits of e-books and have embraced their possibilities, while others see fine press books and e-books coexisting side by side indefinitely because of their vast disparities."

the same internet browser, one has already logged into a

Hawaiians to Jeff Sessions: 'We're Not Just Some Island'

By Samantha Schmidt

Five months later, on August 21, the collection of islands in the Pacific Ocean officially became the 50th state of the United States.

.

During the years of statehood that followed, thousands of Hawaii citizens served in the military, died and were wounded in wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, won countless decorations and spearheaded civil rights advancements. Others served with distinction in Congress, particularly the late Democratic Sen. Daniel Inouye, who had lost an arm fighting in World War II with the famed Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team, ultimately winning the Congressional Medal of Honor.

.

One Hawaii-born American rose to become the president of the United States.

.

But on Thursday, some felt as though the 50th state was being disrespected, relegated to five words: an island in the Pacific.

In an interview with The Mark Levin Show that was later uncovered by CNN, Attorney General Jeff Sessions implied that a judge from Hawaii which he called simply an island in the Pacific should not be able to strike down Trumps travel ban.

.

I really am amazed that a judge sitting on an island in the Pacific can issue an order that stops the president of the United States from what appears to be clearly his statutory and Constitutional power, Sessions said.

.

snip

.

The comments were not only demeaning, it was noted, but also geographically incorrect. The state of Hawaii is not, in fact, an island in the Pacific it is a stunningly beautiful collection of islands, an archipelago of eight major islands and many islets and atolls. Its wondrous beaches and mountains attract millions of visitors from the U.S. mainland, who dont need passports to visit, and bring in massive amounts of revenue to the U.S. from foreign countries, especially Japan.

.

One of its islands is indeed called Hawaii, but the federal judge that Sessions criticized is based in Honolulu on the island of Oahu.

.

The fact that Sessions didnt even say the states name in his initial remarks was most offensive for some, said Nadine Y. Ando, president of the Hawaii State Bar Association.

.

Excuse me? Ando said in an interview with The Washington Post. We have been a state for 58 years. Were not just some island.

.

The comments were also dismissive of Judge Derrick Watson, an appointed and confirmed federal judge, Ando said, not some outlier judge sitting in the middle of nowhere. While she understood Sessions desire to express his opinions regarding the judges decision, Ando said, its unfortunate that in the process of doing that, he demeaned the entire state.

.

The disparaging statement or as the Honolulu Star-Advertiser called it, Sessions diss of Hawaii, spurred lawmakers, politicians and others who call Hawaii home to defend the 50th state, latching onto the hashtag #IslandinthePacific.

.

Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin gave a subtle yet scathing response, tweeting a photo of the statute that established Hawaiis statehood.

JULIAN ASSANGE HAS made himself a difficult figure to love. The organization he created, WikiLeaks, has spilled secrets that infuriate the right and, more recently, the left side of the political aisle. He burns all bridges, alienates friends, and sees enemies everywhere. Mounting evidence suggests he even allowed his organization to serve as a leak-laundering service for Kremlin hackers seeking to swing a US election.

.

But if the US Department of Justice prosecutes Assange, as it reportedly may soon, he could become something else: the first journalist in modern history to be criminally charged by American courts for publishing classified information. WikiLeaks may not look like a traditional journalism outlet, but it shares the same endspublishing true information from its sources. And that means legal action against Assange could threaten the freedom of the press as a whole.

.

Any prosecution would be incredibly dangerous for the First Amendment and pretty much every reporter in the United States, says Trevor Timm, executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation. You can hate WikiLeaks all you want, but if theyre prosecuted, that precedent can be turned around and used on all the reporters you do like.

.

Dangerous Precedent

.

On Thursday afternoon, the Washington Post and CNN separately reported that the Department of Justice is considering charges against Assange or other members of the small, secret-spilling group that constitutes WikiLeaks. Those charges would reportedly stem not only from WikiLeaks recent publications of classified CIA materials that include highly secret hacking tools and techniques, but also the seven-year-old publication of 250,000 State Department communications, known as Cablegate, that WikiLeaks received from now-pardoned Army private Chelsea Manning. In remarks just last week, CIA director Mike Pompeo decried WikiLeaks as a non-state, hostile intelligence agency.

.

But as controversial as its publications have been, WikiLeaks and its defenders have argued they were also the work of journalistsalbeit ones with a radical adherence to principles of transparency, and new tools for soliciting material from sensitive sources. That journalistic work, in theory, qualifies for protection under the free speech guarantees of the First Amendment.

.

For decades, the US Justice Department has restrained itself from testing that protection. Instead, it has limited its prosecutions to the presss sources, charging manyincluding Manningas spies under the Espionage Act.

.

If the Trump administration prosecutes Assange and WikiLeaks under that same hundred-year-old law, it could represent a new and serious crack in the governments de facto policy of respecting reporters First Amendment protections.

.

Never in the history of this country has a publisher been prosecuted for presenting truthful information to the public, ACLU attorney Ben Wizner, who has defended NSA leaker Edward Snowden, writes in a statement to WIRED. Any prosecution of WikiLeaks for publishing government secrets would set a dangerous precedent that the Trump administration would surely use to target other news organizations.

Children and Families FROM National Association of Social Workers

"Fortunately, social workers have a wide array of tools to

help children and families to better cope with the normal

stresses of life and to deal with systemic problems such as

child abuse and homelessness. Through assessment,

support, counseling, resource coordination and advocacy,

social workers:

Counsel families to find better solutions to their problems;

    Place abused children in loving homes;

    Find employment and housing for homeless families;

Help pregnant women, adoptive parents and adopted

children navigate the adoption system; and,

Help children and families make best use of the welfare system.

In all of these arenas, social workers use a systems and

family-oriented approach to helping families cope.

The adoption system is a good example. Social workers

counsel pregnant women, conduct home studies of

potential adoptive parents, find suitable matches of

adoptive parents and children and help adoptive parents

deal with the struggles unique to adopted children.

Increasingly, they also provide post-adoption counseling

to help older adoptees deal with issues of self-identity,

loss and self esteem as well as medical problems that may

have a genetic component."

JOURNAL: Advances in Social Work

"Advances in Social Work is committed to enhancing

the linkage among social work practice, research, and

education. Accordingly, the journal addresses current

issues, challenges, and responses facing social work

practice and education. The journal invites discussion

and development of innovations in social work practice

and their implications for social work research and

education. Advances in Social Work seeks to publish

empirical, conceptual, and theoretical articles that make

substantial contributions to the field in all areas of social

work including clinical practice, community organization,

social administration, social policy, planning, and program

evaluation. The journal provides a forum for scholarly

exchange of research findings and ideas that advance

knowledge and inform social work practice. All relevant

methods of inquiry are welcome. Advances in Social Work

is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes original work.

Articles are accepted on the basis of appropriateness,

clarity, sound methodology, and utility for social work

practice, research, and education. Articles are indexed or

abstracted in Social Work Abstracts and Social Service

Abstracts."
