71 killed as Flight 2933 crashes on way to Medellin

Plane was carrying 77 passengers and crew

Total was originally announced as 81, but four did not board

Passengers include Chapecoense football team from Brazil

Seven found alive, one has since died

Who are Chapecoense? A profile of the Brazilian football team

.

A chartered plane with a Brazilian first division football team crashed near Medellin while on its way to the finals of a regional tournament, killing 71 people, Colombian officials said. Six people survived.

.

The British Aerospace 146 short-haul plane, operated by a charter airline named LaMia, declared an emergency and lost radar contact just before 10pm on Monday (0300 GMT) because of an electrical failure, aviation authorities said.

.

The aircraft, which had departed from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, was transporting the Chapecoense team from southern Brazil for the first leg of a two-game Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional of Medellin, which was due to be played on Wednesday.

.

"What was supposed to be a celebration has turned into a tragedy," Medellin mayor Federico Gutierrez said from the search and rescue command centre.

.

The club said in a brief statement on its Facebook page that "may God accompany our athletes, officials, journalists and other guests travelling with our delegation".

.

Dozens of rescuers working through the night were initially heartened after pulling three passengers alive from the wreckage.

.

But as the hours passed, and heavy rainfall and low visibility grounded helicopters and complicated efforts to reach the mountainside crash site, the mood soured to the point that authorities had to freeze until dusk what was by then a body recovery operation.

.

Among the survivors was a Chapecoense defender named Alan Ruschel, who doctors said suffered spinal injuries. Two goalkeepers, Marcos Danilo and Jackson Follmann, as well as a member of the team's delegation and a Bolivian flight attendant, also survived the crash. However Danilo died a short time later.

.

Also killed was Tiago de Rocha Viera, a 22-year-old forward. A video spread online of Viera's thrilled reaction to learning one week before the crash that his wife Graziele was pregnant with their first child.

.

The plane was carrying 68 passengers and nine crew members. Four other people listed on the flight manifest did not board the plane. Twenty-one of the passengers were journalists, of whom just one survived.

.

Local radio said the same British-made aircraft transported Argentina's national squad for a match earlier this month in Brazil, and previously had transported Venezuela's national team.

.

The black boxes were found, and could play a crucial role as investigators try and determine what caused the crash.

.

Alfredo Bocanegra, the head of Colombia's aviation authority, said initial reports suggest the aircraft was suffering electrical problems although investigators were also looking into an account from one of the survivors that the plane had run out of fuel about five minutes from its expected landing at Jose Maria Cordova airport outside Medellin.

.

The team, from the small city of Chapeco, was in the middle of a fairy tale season. It joined Brazil's first division in 2014 for the first time since the 1970s and made it last week to the Copa Sudamericana final - the equivalent of the Uefa Europa League tournament - after defeating two of Argentina's fiercest squads, San Lorenzo and Independiente, as well as Colombia's Junior.

.

"This morning I said goodbye to them and they told me they were going after the dream, turning that dream into reality," a Chapecoense board member told TV Globo. "The dream was over early this morning."

.

The team is so modest that its 22,000-seat arena was ruled by tournament organizers too small to host the final match, which was instead moved to a stadium 300 miles (480 kilometers) to the north in the city of Curitiba.

.

"This is unbelievable, I am walking on the grass of the stadium and I feel like I am floating," Andrei Copetti, a team spokesman, told The Associated Press. "No one understands how a story that was so amazing could suffer such a devastating reversal. For many people here reality has still not struck."

Soccer Crash Survivors Undergo Operations in Colombia, Probe Begins

Doctors treated traumatized survivors and an investigation was to get underway on Wednesday into an air crash that killed 71 people and wiped out Brazil's Chapecoense soccer team en route to a cup final in Colombia.

.

Only six people - three players, a journalist and two crew members - survived the disaster on Monday night when Chapecoense's charter plane hit a mountain en route to their Copa Sudamericana showdown in Medellin city.

.

All were being treated at local hospitals.

.

Of the players, goalkeeper Jackson Follmann was recovering from the amputation of his right leg, doctors said.

.

Defender Helio Neto remained in intensive care with severe trauma to his skull, thorax and lungs.

.

Fellow defender Alan Ruschel had spine surgery.

.

Investigators from Brazil were flying in to join Colombian counterparts checking two black boxes from the crash site on a muddy hillside in wooded highlands near La Union town.

.

Soldiers guarded the wreckage overnight after rescuers left, and investigators were to start work at first light.

.

Bolivia, where the charter company LAMIA was based, and the United Kingdom, also sent in experts to help the probe.

.

Prior to crashing, the BAe 146 had radioed it was having electrical problems, and weather conditions were poor - but there was still no official word on the cause.

.

snip

.

It was an appalling twist to a fairy-tale story for Chapecoense, which rose since 2009 from Brazil's fourth to top division and was about to play the biggest match in its history in the first leg of the regional cup final in Medellin.

.

Distraught fans gathered around the team's Conda stadium in Chapeco, a town of about 200,000 people in south Brazil.

You don't see self-driving cars taking over American cities yet, but robotic tractors already roar through our corn and soybean farms, helping to plant and spray crops. They also gather huge troves of data, measuring moisture levels in the soil and tracking unruly weeds. Combine that with customized weather forecasts and satellite imagery, and farmers can now make complex decisions like when to harvestwithout ever stepping outside.

.

These tools are part of a new trend, known as "precision agriculture," that is transforming how we grow crops. Using everything from sensors on combines to drones equipped with infrared cameras that monitor plant health, service providersranging from Monsanto and DuPont to startupstake data from the fields, upload it to the cloud, crunch it, and provide farmers with advice on how to run their operations.

.

Precision agriculture has been around since the '90s, but it really took off when GPS technology became cheap and ubiquitous in the mid-2000s. It got another major boost in 2013, when Monsanto, a top producer of genetically modified seeds and pesticides, bought a Silicon Valley weather prediction startup called the Climate Corporation for $930 million. Monsanto now claims its digital-ag platform is used on nearly 45 percent of US corn and soybean acres. Even as seed and pesticide sales stagnate across the industry, revenue from farm data services reached $2.76 billion in 2015, and one market research firm estimates it'll grow to $4.8 billion by 2020.

.

Last year, Monsanto cut a deal with John Deere, owner of most of the US tractor market. Data pulled from Deere tractors will feed the Climate Corp.'s data-crunching services. As a result of these collaborations, Monsanto CEO Hugh Grant recently told investors, Monsanto aims to become the "integrating hub" for seeds, traits, and pesticides, delivering "data insights" straight to farmers.

.

And now, of course, Monsanto is in the process of being bought by German chemical giant Bayer, itself a large purveyor of pesticides and (to a lesser extent) seeds. If the Monsanto-Bayer deal passes regulatory muster in the United States and the European Union, the combined company will own a quarter of the globe's seed and pesticide markets. In the run-up to the deal, Bayer cited Monsanto's heft in the data market as one of its main motivations for subsuming its smaller US rival.

.

Meanwhile, Bayer and Monsanto's handful of competitors have jumped in. Dow and DuPont, also in the process of combining into one massive seed-and-agrichemical giant, have both launched precision-ag arms. Syngenta offers AgriEdge Excelsior, a "whole farm programacross digital platforms." In short, these globe-spanning companies are vying to become one-stop farm shops, selling seeds (often genetically modified), pesticides, data analysis, and ultimately advice on how to knit it all together.

Trumps Koch Administration

Despite past clashes and looming policy disputes the Koch brothers operation has allies in key positions on Trumps team.

By KENNETH P. VOGEL and ELIANA JOHNSON

11/28/16 05:01 AM EST

Politico

http://www.politico.com/story/2016/11/trump-koch-brothers-231863

.

.

Charles Koch once likened the contest between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to being asked to choose cancer or a heart attack.

.

Now, Kochs allies are helping to launch Trumps administration, giving Charles and his brother David potential inroads with a president whose campaign they refused to support.

.

The president-elect, in filling out his transition team and administration, has drawn heavily from the vast network of donors and advocacy groups built by the billionaire industrialist brothers, who have sought to reshape American politics in their libertarian image.

.

From White House Counsel Don McGahn and transition team advisers Tom Pyle, Darin Selnick and Alan Cobb to Presidential Inaugural Committee member Diane Hendricks and transition-team executive committee members Rebekah Mercer and Anthony Scaramucci, Trump has surrounded himself with people tied to the Kochs.

.

In creating the Koch network, I dont think that we ever envisioned that we would be supplying staffers to this semi-free market, semi-populist president, said Frayda Levin, a donor to the network who chairs the board of its main voter mobilization group, Americans for Prosperity. But were happy that hes picking people who have that free market background, particularly because on many issues, he is a blank slate, so anybody with expertise is in an amazing position to shape his agenda.

.

And many more Koch-linked operatives are expected to join Trumps nascent administration in the coming weeks, according to Trump transition-team sources. Names being considered include Koch Industries lobbyist Brian Henneberry and former company spokesman Matt Lloyd, as well as Daniel Garza, who runs a Koch-backed nonprofit called the LIBRE Initiative that courts Latinos, not to mention a handful of veterans of the Koch networks advocacy groups who worked on the Trump campaign from top Pence adviser Marc Short and former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski to ex-campaign aides Stuart Jolly, Eli Miller, Scott Hagerstrom, Charles Munoz and Matt Ciepielowski.

.

Perhaps more surprisingly, despite some predictions of imminent policy clashes, theres already informal communication between the Trump team and the Koch network, and both camps are signaling a willingness to work together on issues of mutual interest. David Koch even attended Trumps election night victory party.

.

How long the comity lasts between Trump and the powerful Koch brothers could go far in determining whether Trump is able to take full advantage of the complete Republican control of Washington ushered in by his stunning victory over his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

.

Things werent so agreeable during the campaign, when the Koch operation blocked Trump from directly accessing its data or its candidate forums, while the brothers condemned the first-time candidate for his combative tone, his calls for a Muslim immigration ban and his opposition to the sorts of trade policies that facilitate the brothers vision of unfettered global capitalism. At one point, Charles Koch compared the choice between Trump and Clinton to choosing between cancer or heart attack, and the Koch network did not spend any money directly boosting Trump or attacking Clinton.

.

Trump in turn boasted that the Kochs could not influence him because he didnt want their money or anything else from them. And he blasted his rivals for the GOP nomination as puppets of the Kochs. A possible truce after Trump clinched the nomination broke down quickly, with the two sides clashing over who rejected a proposed meeting.

.

The Koch network, which some believed was discouraging its operatives from working with Trumps campaign, is now seen by insiders as welcoming the chance to have allies on the inside of Trumps administration.

I was born in the early 50's, spent 8 years in the Air Force, and had the chance to raise two great kids and enjoy a prosperous America before the right wing tentacles grabbed two thirds of our government. I've watched this happen in my lifetime as have many of you. Please take a few minutes and grab a fresh cup of coffee (or tea), sit back and review the timeline I've put together. Yes, it is lengthy, but our American government wasn't infiltrated over night. It was a calculated effort. This essay explains not only what happened, but chronicles the pre-determined sequence of events that allowed it to happen.

.

Conservatives reading this will immediately be on the defensive. And you should be. But all the evidence presented here is documented and undeniable. These are the facts. And denying facts is precisely what you have been systematically conditioned to do. If you read this through to the end, (which I challenge you to do) you'll know exactly what is meant by that statement.

.

Anyone who values and cherishes what our founding fathers built for us would call this treason - the intentional undermining of the United States Government to satisfy corporate goals, including the transfer of trillions of dollars in public funds. This essay details the most massive fraud perpetrated against a population in human history - the defrauding of every citizen of the United States of America, regardless of race, religion, political affiliation or lack thereof, with the ultimate prize being the United States Constitution.

.

This is an attempt to present a timeline sequence of events and activities, over the last 66 years, beginning with the McCarthy Era, a good time-frame to introduce the art of scapegoating, used with such success today. I believe we have evidence that the Republican Party of the United States of America colluded, then planned and executed heinous financial and social crimes against the people of the United States of America. The Republican Party has, with the intention of complete social upheaval, financial domination, and ultimate capture of the Constitution, undermined the very institution of the United States government. At its most basic level, this is a case of cause and effect. For the technically minded, consider this a root cause analysis. Evidence included.

Timelines

1950-1956 McCarthyism

Now to 2013 Is Senator Ted Cruz Our New McCarthy?

1958 Fred Koch (1900-1967)

1958-Present The John Birch Society

(JBS) is an American political advocacy group that supports anti-communism and limited government. It has been described as radical right. Businessman and founder Robert W. Welch Jr. (18991985) and oil tycoon co-founder Fred R. Koch developed an elaborate organizational infrastructure (consider today's right wing structure) in 1958 that enabled them to keep a very tight rein on the chapters. Its main activity in the 1960s, says Rick Perlstein, "comprised monthly meetings to watch a film by Welch, followed by writing postcards or letters to government officials linking specific policies to the Communist menace."

Fast forward; the 60's

The Blueprint - The Powell Memorandum In 1971

Letter from Syndor acknowledging receipt of Powell Memo.

1972 Birth of the Takeover

They teamed with the religious right.

1994-present Government is the Problem Next Stop: De-legitimizing the Body of Government.

The Target: Congressional Intelligence
This is the successful effort to dumb-down the body of Congress, with Newt Gingrich at the helm

And then there's ALEC American Legislative Executive Council - Conservative legislation pre-written to satisfy the pro-business/anti-citizen agenda, now adopted by states with conservative majorities. This legislation has little to no regard for human lives or environmental consequences.

1985 to 2008 Starving the Beast - the transfer of public wealth to private interests

The Scam 2008 to Present - Getting the Citizens on the Bandwagon

2009 to Present The Tea Party Funded and strengthened by Americans for Prosperity - Koch front group

2013 to Present Groundswell the 30 Front War Without a doubt, Groundswell is the most blatant conflict of interest in the history of the United States Supreme Court. Groundswell was (is) an effort to coordinate the messaging efforts of the right wing in a manner that would be accepted by progressives in this country. One of the coordinators of this effort is none other than the wife of Supreme Court Justice Thomas, Ginni Thomas. One could surmise that the demonization of Secretary Hillary Clinton was high on their to-do list for 2016. Believing they are losing the messaging war with progressives, a group of prominent conservatives in Washingtonincluding the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and journalists from Breitbart News and the Washington Examinerhas been meeting privately since early this year to concoct talking points, coordinate messaging, and hatch plans for "a 30 front war seeking to fundamentally transform the nation," according to documents obtained by Mother Jones.

The Rise of Alternative Media and the Alt Right The Great Conditioning With respect to Groundswell, it cannot be denied that it found success in Right Wing media.

Automation The Rise of Chatbots An automated army of pro-Donald J. Trump chatbots overwhelmed similar programs supporting Hillary Clinton five to one in the days leading up to the presidential election, according to a report published Thursday by researchers at Oxford University. The chatbots basic software programs with a bit of artificial intelligence and rudimentary communication skills would send messages on Twitter based on a topic, usually defined on the social network by a word preceded by a hashtag symbol, like #Clinton. Their purpose: to rant, confuse people on facts, or simply muddy discussions, said Philip N. Howard, a sociologist at the Oxford Internet Institute and one of the authors of the report. If you were looking for a real debate of the issues, you werent going to find it with a chatbot.

Americans shouldnt be fretting about voter fraud: The Brennan Center for Justice recently released a briefing filled with resources and links to studies showing the rarity of the supposed phenomena; a longer report details an overall documented electoral fraud rate of 0.000009% in 2004-2005; and a Washington Post article titled Comprehensive investigation of voter impersonation finds 31 credible incidents out of one billion ballots cast pretty much sums up the fact that its a non-issue. So why is voter fraud being talked about so much this election cycleand why do so many intelligent, well-meaning people seem to believe its a real problem?

.

I liken voter fraud to the famous Hans Christian Andersen fable The Emperors New Clothes. In this tale, a vain Emperor hires two smooth-talking weavers who promise to make him the finest suit made out of a fabric that is invisible to anyone unfit for his position or hopelessly stupid. Everyone around himfrom his closest advisors to the towns peasantsplays along, as they dont want to admit to themselves or each other that theyre not intelligent or worthy enough to see the suit. Finally, a child who is too young to abide by societys pack mentality cries out that the Emperor isnt actually wearing any clotheshes butt naked.

.

Similarly, voter fraud isnt real. But people act as if its a factual reality because they dont want to be called out as being stupid or as not being in on the farce. The blind follow the blind, and soon enough, the repeated falsehood becomes so real that you forget that you were only playing along in the first place.

.

Lets call our version of the story The Voters New Woes. The cabal of reactionary forces known as the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) are the two weavers who make the Emperor his invisible suit. The ALEC is basically a nasty concoction of folk that includes the Republican Party, the alt-right, the Tea Party, and the Chambers of Commerce. It has been around for 45 years and is the backbone of the conservative movement in this country. If you trace back any news story over the past ten years about voter fraud, youll eventually run into ALEC.

.

snip

.

The answer has a lot to do with the fact that racial and ethnic minorities, along with queer people and women, are gaining increasing power in the US. With that change comes the possibility of a more progressive, inclusive, and liberated Americamaybe even a more socialist America. When those pesky people participate in elections and other civic activities, they start to demand accountability and fairness in our society. They start to ask why so few have so much, and so many have so little. This is bad for ALEC and their corporate backers.

.

For the past 10 years, ALEC has been introducing legislation to restrict voting laws in nearly every state across the US. Many of the bills are copycat bills with the exact same language from state to state. These laws include everything from voter-ID laws to shortening early-voting periods. These voter-suppression laws are the real problem that the news media and presidential candidates should be talking aboutnot voter fraud.

.

If you are under 40 or over 70, brown or a woman, these folks dont want you to vote. They dont want a democracy, because it stands in the way of their profit margin. Thats whats really behind the myth of voter fraud: money. The only voter fraud being committed on Nov. 8 will be the people turned away at the polls because they forgot their ID at home or dont have one, and the people who cant vote because they work all day Tuesday and have no options for early voting.

WASHINGTON President-elect Donald J. Trump said on Sunday that he had fallen short in the popular vote in the general election only because millions of people had voted illegally, leveling the baseless claim as part of a daylong storm of Twitter posts voicing anger about a three-state recount push.

.

In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally, Mr. Trump wrote Sunday afternoon.

.

The series of posts came one day after Hillary Clintons campaign said it would participate in a recount effort being undertaken in Wisconsin, and potentially in similar pushes in Michigan and Pennsylvania, by Jill Stein, who was the Green Party candidate. Mr. Trumps statements revived claims he made during the campaign, as polls suggested he was losing to Mrs. Clinton, about a rigged and corrupt system.

.

The Twitter outburst also came as Mr. Trump is laboring to fill crucial positions in his cabinet, with his advisers enmeshed in a rift over whom he should select as secretary of state. On Sunday morning, Kellyanne Conway, a top adviser, extended a public campaign to undermine one contender, Mitt Romney a remarkable display by a member of a president-elects team. In television appearances, she accused Mr. Romney of having gone out of his way to hurt Mr. Trump during the Republican primary contests.

.

Claims of wide-scale voter fraud have been advanced for years by Republicans, though virtually no evidence of such improprieties has been discovered especially on the scale of millions that Mr. Trump claimed.

.

Late on Sunday, again without providing evidence, he referred in a Twitter post to serious voter fraud in Virginia, New Hampshire and California.

.

A day earlier, Mr. Trumps transition team ridiculed the idea that recounts were needed. This is a scam by the Green Party for an election that has already been conceded, it said in a statement, and the results of this election should be respected instead of being challenged and abused.

.

That message runs counter to the one Mr. Trump sent on Sunday with his fraud claims if millions of people voted illegally, presumably officials across the country would want to pursue large-scale ballot recounts and fraud investigations.

.

But the Twitter posts could energize some of his supporters, who have claimed online that Mrs. Clintons two million-vote lead in the popular vote has been faked. Mr. Trump at times promoted other conspiracy theories during the campaign, including claiming that Senator Ted Cruzs father was somehow tied to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

.

Many of Mrs. Clintons supporters have been galvanized by the notion that vote recounts in the three states where Mr. Trump leads by a combined total of about 100,000 votes could somehow overturn Mr. Trumps commanding Electoral College victory. By announcing, three weeks after Mrs. Clinton conceded, that it would participate in the Wisconsin recount, her team has helped reignite the contentious atmosphere of the campaign, of which Mr. Trumps Twitter barrages were a fixture. (By all accounts, Mr. Trump types out many, though not all, of his own Twitter posts.)

.

After spending almost five days in Palm Beach, Fla., where he celebrated Thanksgiving at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Mr. Trump made no public statements on Sunday other than those via Twitter. He returned in the afternoon to Trump Tower in Manhattan.

A shady website that claims Russia is Manipulating US Opinion Through Online Propaganda has compiled a blacklist of websites its anonymous authors accuse of pushing fake news and Russian propaganda. The blacklist includes over 200 outlets, from the right-wing Drudge Report and Russian government-funded Russia Today, to Wikileaks and an array of marginal conspiracy and far-right sites. The blacklist also includes some of the flagship publications of the progressive left, including Truthdig, Counterpunch, Truthout, Naked Capitalism, and the Black Agenda Report, a leftist African-American opinion hub that is critical of the liberal black political establishment.

Called PropOrNot, the blacklisting organization was described by the Washington Posts Craig Timberg as a nonpartisan collection of researchers with foreign policy, military and technology backgrounds. The Washington Post agreed to preserve the anonymity of the groups director on the grounds that exposure could result in their being targeted by Russias legions of skilled hackers. The Post failed to explain what methods PropOrNot relied on to conclude that stories planted or promoted by the Russian disinformation campaign were viewed more than 213 million times." (Timberg also cited a report co-authored by Aaron Weisburg, founder of the one-man anti-Palestinian Internet Haganah operation, who has been accused of interfering in federal investigations, stealing the personal information of anarchists, online harassment, and fabricating information to smear his targets.)

.

Despite the Washington Posts charitable description of PropOrNot as a group of independent-minded researchers dedicated to protecting the integrity of American democracy, the shadowy group bears many of the qualities of the red enemies it claims to be battling. In addition to its blacklist of Russian dupes, it lists a collection of outlets funded by the U.S. State Department, NATO and assorted tech and weapons companies as allies. PropOrNots methodology is so shabby it is able to peg widely read outlets like Naked Capitalism, a leading left-wing financial news blog, as Russian propaganda operations.

.

Though the supposed experts behind PropOrNot remain unknown, the site has been granted a veneer of credibility thanks to the Washington Post, and journalists from the New York Times, including deputy Washington editor Jonathan Weissman to former Obama senior advisor Dan Pfeiffer, are hailing Timbergs story as Pulitzer-level journalism. Russia appears to have successfully hacked American democracy, declared Sahil Kapur, the senior political reporter for Bloomberg. The dead-enders of Hillary Clintons campaign for president have also seized on PropOrNots claims as proof that the election was rigged, with Clinton confidant and Center For American Progress president Neera Tanden declaring, Wake up people, as she blasted out the Washington Post article on Russian black ops.

.

PropOrNots malicious agenda is clearly spelled out on its website. While denying McCarthyite intentions, the group is openly attempting to compel formal investigations by the U.S. government, because the kind of folks who make propaganda for brutal authoritarian oligarchies are often involved in a wide range of bad business.

The Rise Of The 'Alt Right' And Religious Right Are Chillingly Similar

It wasnt over on November 8.

.

Of course it wasnt. This race, with its roiling of our electoral landscape, is the kind that leaves legacieseven if Trump had lost, the stain of what Trump has made possible would be with us.

.

Trump has reinvigorated white nationalism; his nomination of Steve Bannon as White House chief strategist makes that clear enough. While many across the political spectrum have reacted with horror at Trumps bigotry, all too many Republicans and conservatives may instead be taking lessons from him on how to exploit the newly-invigorated alt-right, the trendy name given to people who are mostly unreconstructed white nationalists and neo-Nazis. (Theres even been a push to disavow this term altogether, for the way it obscures and normalizes the bigotry and hatred that fuels this movement, with media figures taking pledges to never use the term alt-right at all.)
For a party that has shown itself to be chronically allergic to expanding its base, finding ways to ratchet up the rage of angry white men may seem to be the only hope. Worse, the self-identified alt-rights internet-savvy gloss provides Republicans with the illusory sense that young voters are turned on by this fundamentally paleoconservative message.

.

It could work, for a time at least. With Faustian grace, the Republicans have shown themselves to be adept at buying a moments vigor and wealth at the cost of their souls. The last time the GOP made such a deal was in the late 1970s, awakening the politically quietist constituency of Evangelical Christians and giving birth to the Religious Righta force that would imbue the Republicans with immense power, even providing the margin of victory in the painfully tight 2004 presidential race. But it would also consume the party, drowning it in ever more stringent purity pledges, infighting, and indulgence of extremismdragging the country in its undertow by saddling us with draconian abortion restrictions, bathroom bills, and other self-satirizing absurdities at every level of government.

.

The racists Trump has courted will destroy the Republican Party as we know it, but that slow, violent death will catch us all in its wake, with potentially devastating consequences for American democracyand what may rise in its place should comfort no one.

.

We can glean a lot about whats ahead by studying the legacy of the Religious Right.

.

snip

.

Republicans found their wedge issue in religiously inspired segregation._
Throughout the 1970s, the Christian college, Bob Jones University, had been fighting the Internal Revenue Service to keep its tax-exempt status despite its prohibition on interracial dating and marriage; for many white Christians, the IRS rule and successive court rulings against Bob Jones University were unforgivable intrusions on their religious liberty. In 1984, at long last, the matter was settled by the Supreme Court, which ruled that the IRSs revocation of tax exempt status did not violate the free exercise clause of the First Amendment. But during the cases many years wending its way through the courts, Republican doyen andHeritage Foundation co-founder Paul Weyrich used the issue to galvanize white Evangelicals angry about political correctness. More than even abortion, this issue began getting the nascent moral majority to pull the lever for Republicans and eventually, for Ronald Reagan himself.

.

Just six years after Nixons historic resignation, Republicans were back on their way to the White House with a thumping mandate from the electorate. But the moral majority wanted more than occasional meetings with the Gipper and God Bless America.

.

The history of the Republican Party these last 30 years is the tale of a flesh-eating virus. Though many politicized Evangelical Christians will speak fondly of Reagan, to speak to them in private is to hear their quiet laments about his overall inaction on issues like abortion and divorce. Indeed, Reagans administration, though thoroughly right-wing, was more consumed with neoconservative foreign policy and Friedmanite Monetarism than the soft social issues that so animated the Religious Right. They wanted more, and demanded it quite loudly at the 1992 convention when they booed Massachusetts Governor William Weld off the stage for making a pro-choice speech (his political fate was to be Gary Johnsons running mate this year).

.

snip

.

This is the party Trump now commands, clothed in terrifying power at the federal and state level, leading an ongoing revolution against itself and the nations women and minorities. The deal made with the religious right was one built on the idea that Platonic Republican leaders could use the noble lie of Evangelical Christianity as a circus for a new bloc of voters. It consumed them and came to dominate the party with terrifying sincerity.

.

Now the Republican President will be a man who, despite his bombastic repudiation of piety, is taking his party in a new direction with the blessing of those religious voters. Over the years, these voters have been convinced to reverse their prioritization of religion over politics, giving in to ever more worldly political causes. Its made way for their heirs. There is a very real possibility that Trumps white nationalist voters will be the next cancer to metastasize on the GOP.

.

Trump has tapped into what we might think of as the KKKs David Duke wing of the Republican Party, feeding racist resentment in ways so blatant that dog whistles are just whistles now. The energy Trump has generated, riding to a convincing primary victory through cultivating a cult of personality around his bigoted tell it like it is bombast, is doubtlessly attractive to Republicans.

.

Weve been here before; the Faustian temptations abound. Even if Trump had led his party to a historic defeat, the forces that hes summoned up would not have gone away; as things stand, things are just more blatant now.
Trumps victory was excruciatingly narrow, and hes poised to lose the popular vote by millions. This is cause for some cold comfort, but it carries its own warning. Barry Goldwater and his fiery far right conservatism lost in a nationwide rout in 1964 while giving Nixon ideas for how to win big just four years later, and set the stage for a young Ronald Reagan to begin making the case for his own brand of right-wing ideology, cultivating a new base for the party.

.

We should not doubt that there are many Republicans in the wings now looking at how Trump made white nationalism respectable again, trying to figure out how best to exploit that. They see that voter suppression has worked, and that Trumps appeals excite rural whites (of all classes) who had been turned off by mainstream Republicanism. They, undoubtedly, feel they have a formula now, which will be deployed at every electoral opportunity.

.

Goldwaters radical credoextremism in defense of liberty is no vicehas been the rallying cry for those dragging the Republican Party further and further to the right.

Jane Mayer on The Koch Brothers' Plan to 'in Effect, Buy America'

By Eric Black

In her journalistic work for The New Yorker magazine, and in her most recent book, Dark Money, Mayer has assembled the various sightings of a tentacle here and there into a story about the Kochs plan to in effect, buy America, and to do it without attracting too much attention. She spoke about it yesterday at a forum hosted by the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

.

The Koch Bros. are not so much Republicans as ultraconservative libertarians. (David Koch was actually the vice-presidential nominee on the Libertarian Party ticket in 1980 the year Ronald Reagan was elected. The younger Koch ran on a platform that called for the abolition or at least privatization of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.) Mayer said the Kochs come from a far-right element that derives from the John Birch Society of the 1950s and '60s.

.

That Libertarian ticket ran a distant fourth, with 1 percent of the popular vote. And, since then, the Kochs have worked, assiduously and pretty effectively, to develop and implement what Mayer called a strategy for, in effect, buying America.

.

By buying America, Mayer seems to mean buying elections and buying them on behalf of candidates representing the right wing of the Republican Party much further right than Reagan, the defining conservative of his era, was and believing more radically than Reagan did in a very small government and a very large role for the wants and needs and power of the wealthy.

.

The politically astute portion of the population has heard and read a bit about the Koch brothers, but the Kochs generally stay out of the spotlight and they have developed ways and means of operating in the dark, which is why Mayers book is called Dark Money.

.

'An invitation to corruption'

.

One of their favorite methods, she said, is what she calls weaponizing philanthropy. This is a method, which Im sure youve heard about, of exploiting loopholes in the campaign finance laws to set up organizations with names that sound like philanthropies but which have ways of injecting huge sums of money into political advertising. These methods, aided by Supreme Court rulings, have exploded just since 2013, to the point where Mayer estimates that for about two-thirds of all the money spent on political messaging, you cant tell whos behind the spending.

.

Secret money in politics, she added, is an invitation to corruption.

.

Over recent years, Mayer said, you can see the influence that these weaponized

.

Over recent years, Mayer said, you can see the influence that these weaponized philanthropies are having in, for example, a growing number of Americans who say that human-caused global warming is not happening.

.

The Kochs are big-time players in the oil industry (they own a big refinery in Rosemount). Mayer stipulated that the Kochs may be very sincere in their policy goal, but the effect of many of their policy crusades definitely helps them financially as well.

.

One of the big money-in-politics stories in the mainstream press this year was that the Koch brothers were not active in the presidential race. Donald Trump disagrees with their view on many issues, and Trump found ways to win with a much lower level of actual campaign spending than Hillary Clinton spent or than Republican nominee Mitt Romney spent in 2008. Mayer said the fact that Trump won while spending substantially less than his opponent has caused some to wonder whether money is really as big a deal in politics as weve been told. Its a good, but complicated question. Part of the answer is that tweets are free and TV commercials are expensive. But, anyway, we were talking about the Koch Bros.

.

When they decided not to play in the presidential race, the Kochs focused on down-ballot races and, Mayer believes, Koch-influenced spending is a big part of the reason that so many houses of so many legislatures flipped from Democratic to Republican control over recent cycles, including this year.

·  Digital scholarship FROM Wikipedia

Digital scholarship is the use of digital evidence, methods of inquiry, research, publication and preservation to achieve scholarly and research goals.[1] Digital scholarship can encompass both scholarly communication using digital media and research on digital media. An important aspect of digital scholarship is the effort to establish digital media and social media as credible, professional and legitimate means of research and communication.[2] Digital scholarship has a close association with digital humanities, though the relationship between these terms is unclear.
"Digital scholarship may also include born-digital means of scholarly communication that are more traditional, like online journals and databases, e-mail correspondence and the digital or digitized collections of research and academic libraries. Since digital scholarship is concerned with the production and distribution of digital media, discussions about copyright, fair use and digital rights management (DRM) frequently accompany academic analysis of the topic. Combined with open access, digital scholarship is offered as a more affordable and open model for scholarly communication.[3]"

The University Library as Incubator for Digital Scholarship by Bryan Sinclair Published on Monday, June 30, 2014 FROM Educause Review

The University Library as Incubator for Digital Scholarship (EDUCAUSE Review) The University Library as Incubator for Digital Scholarship by Bryan Sinclair Published on Monday, June 30, 2014 FROM Educause Review

"With origins in the digital humanities, digital scholarship in recent years has seen investigators from other disciplines — including the sciences and social sciences — embrace its tools and possibilities. New hybrid communities of inquiry are increasingly visual, collaborative, and spatial, or simply seek to make new connections possible in a digital world. Much of this is owed to advances and convergences in data visualization, mapping applications, and web development"

·  Does Digital Scholarship Have a Future?
Published on Monday, August 5, 2013
FROM Educause Review
BY Edward L. Ayers

"As we try to foster digital scholarship in the years ahead, we need to begin by understanding the cultural, economic, personal, and institutional world in which the new scholarship will live. That scholarly world defines a problem within a meaningful conversation, it arrays evidence to address the problem, it makes the clearest case for a solution to the problem, and it conveys that case to every relevant audience. Digital scholarship must assume all of those responsibilities if it is to take its place as academic scholarship and if it is to align the core purpose of higher education with the possibilities of our time."

·  The Productive Unease of 21st-century Digital Scholarship
BY Julia Flanders FROM Brown University

"Despite prevailingly progressive narratives surrounding the impact of digital technology on modern academic culture, the field of digital humanities is characterized at a deeper level by a more critical engagement with technology. This engagement, which I characterize as a kind of "productive unease", is focused around issues of representation, medium, and structures of scholarly communication."

Technological Progressivism
Productive Unease
1. Digital scholarship is uneasy about the significance of medium.
2. Digital scholarship is uneasy about the institutional structures of scholarly communication.
3. Digital scholarship is uneasy about the significance of representation in forming models of the world.

That's one of the main takeaways from a newly released CDC study that documents sports- and recreation-related injuries. Every year, there are about 8.6 million of these injuries requiring medical attention in the US. About half are treated at doctor's offices or clinics instead of emergency rooms or hospitals.

.

More than a quarter of those injuries, 27.9%, are caused by falls. Other common injury causes include overexertion, "being struck by or against a person or object," and injuries sustained in transportation related to sports or recreation. These are each responsible for somewhere between 12% and 17% of sports injuries.

.

The most common actual injuries are strains or sprains (41%), broken bones (20%), and bruises or superficial injuries (19%). Brain injuries like concussions represent only about 4.5% of the total.

Abstract

Objective

Much of the research on sports- and recreation-related injuries
focuses on a specific population, activity, or type of injury, and national estimates
of the total burden of sports- and recreation-related injuries are limited. This study
provides national estimates of the injury burden and examines the distribution of
sports- and recreation-related injuries across demographic groups, activities, and injury
circumstances.

Methods

Information on medically attended injury episodes for persons aged 5 years and over were obtained from the 20112014 National Health Interview Survey.

Sports- and recreation-related injuries are categorized by the associated activity using a classification scheme based on the International Classification of External Causes of Injury.

Results

An average annual estimate of 8.6 million sports- and recreation-related injury episodes was reported, with an age-adjusted rate of 34.1 per 1,000 population. Males (61.3%) and persons aged 524 years (64.9%) accounted for more than one-half of injury episodes. Injury rates were higher among males, children aged 514 years, and non-Hispanic white persons than for their counterparts. One-half of the sports- and recreation-related injury episodes (50.0%) resulted in treatment at a doctors office or other health clinic without an emergency department visit or hospitalization. Overall, general exercise was the most frequently mentioned activity associated with sports- and recreation-related injuries, but types of activities varied across sex and age groups. Body regions injured while engaging in sports and recreation activities included the lower extremity (42.0%), upper extremity (30.3%), and head and neck (16.4%). ConclusionAs the nation continues to recognize the importance of physical activity to maintain health, more research efforts are needed to examine sport and recreation injury across various activities, demographic groups, and health care settings, especially settings other than emergency departments and hospitals.

Introduction

Clinicians and public health advocates frequently promote physical activity to maintain health and reduce the risk of obesity. Recent estimates show that 213 million Americans aged 6 years and over took part in sports and fitness activities in 2015, up from 209 million in 2014 (1). As more people engage in sports and recreation activities, injuries resulting from these activities pose an increasingly important public health concern (25).

Many epidemiological studies of sports- and recreation-related injuries focus on specific populations, activities, and outcomes. For example, multiple studies have looked at sports injuries among pediatric patients and athletes in organized sports (6). Football, soccer, and basketball are among the most frequently studied sports, and knee injuries, ankle sprains, and concussions are common outcomes in studies identifying risk factors for sports-related injuries (6). A limited number of studies provide national estimates on sports- and recreation-related injuries among all populations. These studies generally focus on emergency department (ED) visits using data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) (5,79), or the Consumer Product Safety Commissions National Electronic Injury Surveillance SystemAll Injury Program (2,1012). Using NHAMCS data, researchers have provided several national estimates of sports- and recreation-related injury visits to the ED. For example, during 1997 1998, an estimated 3.7 million visits were made annually, and among them, 2.6 million involved persons aged 524 years (7). Sports and recreation activities were also the most frequently reported cause of injury-related ED visits among pediatric patients, representing approximately 1 in 5 injury-related ED visits among patients aged 19 and under (8,9). One study using data from 1999 2008 showed that sports accounted for 14% of all ED visits for life-threatening injuries, with a higher proportion seen for children aged 18 and under (32%) than for adults aged 19 and over (9%) (5). Because they tend to include more severe injuries, studies using ED data may underestimate the overall burden of injury from sports and recreation activities. For a more comprehensive look, researchers have used NCHS National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) to obtain estimates on all medically attended injuries, not just those resulting in an ED visit or hospitalization. A study using NHIS data from 19971999 estimated that 7 million Americans received medical attention for sportsand recreation-related injuries each year, and found that men, persons aged 524 years, and white persons reported higher rates than their counterparts (13). With increased participation in sports and recreation activities in recent years, updated estimates of the burden of sports- and recreation-related injuries in the United States are needed. In this study, the overall sex- and age-specific estimated numbers, percentages, and rates of medically attended sports- and recreation-related injuries are described across various demographic groups, sport activities, and injury circumstances using NHIS data from 20112014.

Overall estimates

From 2011 through 2014, Americans aged 5 years and over sustained an average 8.6 million sports- and recreation-related injury episodes per year, or 34.1 episodes per 1,000 persons (Table 1). Sixty-five percent of these injury episodes involved persons aged 524 years, with the highest rate observed among children aged 514 years (76.6 per 1,000 persons). Males accounted for 61% of the sports- and recreation-related injury episodes, with a rate of 41.2 per 1,000 persons. In both sexes, the highest rate was seen for children aged 514, with rates of 86.0 episodes per 1,000 persons for boys and 66.8 episodes per 1,000 persons for girls. Among racial and ethnic groups, non-Hispanic white persons had the highest age-adjusted sports- and recreation-related injury rate (42.5 per 1,000 persons).

Among place of injury occurrence, approximately one-third of the sportsand recreation-related injury episodes occurred at a sport facility, athletic field, or playground, representing about 2.9 million episodes annually. One-half of the sports- and recreation-related injury episodes (or 4.3 million annually) resulted in treatment at a doctors office or other health clinic without an ED visit or hospitalization, and more than onethird (36.6% or 3.2 million) resulted in an ED visit without further hospitalization. Approximately 230,000 sports- and recreation-related injury episodes (2.7%) resulted in hospitalization. Activity-specific estimates, by sex

Table 2 shows the estimated annual number, percentage, and rate of sportsand recreation-related injury episodes by type of activity. General exercise was the most frequently mentioned activity in injury episodes for all persons (16.3%) and for females (18.6%). For males, the most frequently mentioned activities were general exercise (14.9%), football (12.4%), and basketball (12.2%) (estimates were not significantly different), followed by pedal cycling (7.1%) and recreational sports (6.5%). General exercise was further categorized into Aerobics, exercising or weighttraining, Running or jogging, and School related (non-specific) activity such as recess or a physical education class without a specific sport mentioned. For all persons and for males, injury episodes resulting from aerobics, exercising, or weight training were more common than episodes resulting from running or jogging or nonspecific school-related activities. For females, the proportion of injuries that involved aerobics, exercising, or weight training (8.2%) was similar to the proportion involving running or jogging (7.2%). Activity-specific estimates, by age group

The sports and recreation activity at the time of injury also differed by age group. Table 3 shows the top five activities among age groups 514 years, 1524, and 25 and over. General exercise was frequently mentioned in all three age groups, accounting for 13.1%, 14.3%, and 21.9% of the injury episodes for age groups 514 years, 1524, and 25 and over, respectively. While gymnastics/ cheerleading and football were frequently identified in the age groups 514 and 1524, basketball was most common in age groups 1524 and 25 and over.

Pedal cycling was among the top five activities for age groups 514 years and 25 and over, but not for teenagers and younger adults aged 1524. Injuries from playground activity were frequently seen for age group 514 years, and injuries from recreational sports and water-related activities were frequently seen for those aged 25 and over.

Estimates of injury by external cause, nature of injury, and body part injured More than one-quarter of sports- and recreation-related injury episodes (27.9%) resulted from falls. Other causes such as overexertion, being struck by or against a person or object, or transportation each accounted for 12%17% of the injury episodes (Table 4). The majority of the injury diagnoses involved strains and sprains (41.4%), fractures (20.0%), and superficial injuries and contusions (19.0%). Sports-related TBI, which has received increasing public and research attention, accounted for 4.5% of the total injury diagnoses. The parts of the body most frequently injured while engaging in sports and recreation activities were lower extremity (42.0%), upper extremity (30.3%), and head and neck (16.4%).

Discussion

Research efforts to understand the patterns, risk factors, and physiology of sport injuries provide insights that can help inform prevention and treatment approaches. While many studies have focused on specific sport activities, particularly organized sports, the patterns of injury associated with individual sports, especially those engaged in by nonathletes, have not been welldescribed. The narratives from NHIS injury data not only provide an in-depth understanding of the circumstances surrounding the injury event, but also enable researchers to better estimate the burden of sports- and recreation-related injuries for both organized and individual activities. In addition, the inclusion of all medically attended injury episodes in NHIS provides estimates on injury episodes beyond traditional ED visits and hospitalizations.

This study presents updated estimates on nonfatal medically attended sports- and recreation-related injuries across various demographic groups, activities, and injury circumstances in the United States. From 2011 through 2014, an estimated 8.6 million sportsand recreation-related injury episodes occurred annually, with a rate of 34.1 episodes per 1,000 persons for persons aged 5 years and over. Although the 20112014 estimate was greater than that reported in 19971999 (6.8 million episodes, 27.2 per 1,000 persons) (13), suggestion of an increase in the sportsand recreation-related injuries in the past 15 years should be considered with caution. Differences in survey design, duration of reference (recall) period, and classification of certain sport and recreation activities may hinder direct comparison. However, this studys findings of higher proportions and rates of sports- and recreation-related injuries for males, non-Hispanic white persons, and persons aged 24 and under were consistent with the earlier NHIS study (13).

Although differences in methodology limit the direct comparison of estimates between 19971999 and 20112014, distribution of the injury episodes by activity provides insight into the patterns of these injuries in recent years. In 20112014, general exercise (16.3% of sports- and recreation-related injury episodes), basketball (9.9%), and football (8.3%) were among common activities resulting in sports- and recreation-related injury. In contrast, during 19971999, the most common activities identified were basketball (14.4%), pedal cycling (9.6%), and recreational sports (9.5%).

Results from this study also indicate that the activities at the time of sportsand recreation-related injuries differ by sex and age group. In contrast to males, none of the three most frequently mentioned activities for females included team sports. While injuries related to general exercise, playground equipment, and gymnastics were more common for children aged 514, injuries from organized sports such as basketball, soccer, and football were frequently seen among those aged 1524. For adults aged 25 and over incurring injuries, individual activities such as general exercise, recreational sports, pedal cycling, and water sports were more common.

The differences in the distribution of activities among sports- and recreationrelated injury episodes by sex and age group may be partially explained by the level of participation in these sports. According to the Sport and Fitness Industry Association (19), from 2009 through 2012, the U.S. population aged 6 years and over showed a trend in higher participation rates in exercise and fitness activities, particularly in aerobic activities (including use of stationary exercise machines), running and jogging, strengthtraining activities, and gymnastics than in organized sports. Among organized sports, more Americans participated in basketball than any other team sports, while participation rates from 2009 through 2012 decreased for baseball and football (19). In addition, according to a 2015 telephone poll developed by Harvard Opinion Research Program (20) and the 20032010 American Time Use Survey (21), males are more likely to participate in sports and exercise than females. Compared with males, females also had a lower participation rate in team sports but a higher participation rate in aerobics, yoga, and dancing (21).

In terms of the cause or mechanism of injury, this study found that falls, overexertion, and being struck by or against an object or a person accounted for more than one-half of the injury episodes (60.1%), with falls being the most common cause. This finding was similar to that reported in a study using NHIS data, which identified the most common mechanisms involved in recreational injury (22). In the body regions injured and the type of anatomical injury that occurred, the upper and lower extremities were the most common body regions associated with sports and recreation injuries. Similar to other studies, the most common injury diagnoses were sprains and strains, fractures, superficial injuries, contusions, and open wounds (7,9,13).

National Health Statistics Reports ? Number 99 ? November 18, 2016 Page 5 One-half of the sports- and recreation-related injury episodes were presented to a doctors office or other health clinic without a further ED visit or hospitalization (4.3 million episodes). This supports earlier observations from the Netherlands that one-half of all sports- and recreation-related injuries were seen by general practitioners (23). The current study estimates that 2.2 million sports- and recreation-related injury episodes among children aged 519 years were presented to a doctors office annually, which is similar to estimates from a study using National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey data from 19971998 (2.7 million injury visits to a primary care office) (24). Although sports- and recreation-related injuries presenting to a doctors office are likely to be less severe than ones presenting to EDs, the findings suggest a need for more injury research in alternative non-ED and nonhospitalization settings.

Several study limitations should be noted. NHIS injury data may be subject to recall bias due to the retrospective reporting method and use of proxy. Although NHIS interviews are conducted year-round and weights are used for annualized estimates, the 5-week recall period used in this study may still introduce seasonal effects. In addition, the narratives for approximately 10% of the sports- and recreation-related injury episodes lacked essential details for categorizing the sport activity involved.

It is unknown how the appropriate categorization of these episodes would affect the overall distribution across the sport activity categories. Compared with episodes that mention specific sports and recreation activities, episodes that could not be categorized had a similar demographic distribution but were less likely to occur at school or on a river, lake, stream, or ocean, or to result from transportation-related events (data not shown).

Finally, the lack of data on participation rates for different sports and recreation activities prevents evaluation of the risk of injury for individual sports. The findings from this study provide updated information on the demographics, types of activity, and injury diagnoses associated with sports- and recreation-related injuries.

These findings can be used to develop recommendations for prevention strategies and further research. Results from this study also suggest that a substantial proportion of sports- and recreation-related injuries are treated in health care facilities other than a hospital or ED. As the nation continues to recognize the importance of physical activity, more research efforts are needed to address the complexity of these injuries across various activities, demographic groups, and medical settings.

British children are among the least active in the world, and fitness levels are plummeting, a damning international study has found.

.

Experts said the results were alarming, showing that movement was being stripped out of modern lifestyles, with children weaned on screen-time and starved of outdoor activity.

.

On Sunday night Simon Stevens, head of the NHS, called for radical changes in family routines, describing exercise as a magic pill which would be a pharmaceutical blockbuster if only it could be bottled.

.

Research comparing 38 counties across the globe placed England, Scotland and Wales among the worst for physical activity.

.

Overall, England and Wales were both scored D minus, the third worst grade in the rankings, while Scotland was joint worst, with a grade of F.

.

The rankings, produced by a global alliance of health experts, show the UK lagging far behind a host of countries, including Poland, Slovenia, and Venezuela, when it comes to childrens fitness.

.

Government advice says children should do at least an hour of moderate intensity physical activity per day.

.

But just 15 per cent of girls aged 11 to 15 in England manage this, along with 22 per cent of boys, the report shows. And only one in three children of this age are taking part in any organised sport outside school, according to the figures, presented to the International Congress on Physical Activity and Public Health.

.

The report shows that the fitness of children in England has deteriorated badly since the first such global research was published two years ago, despite repeated pledges by the Government to tackle childhood obesity and couch potato lifestyles.

.

In 2014, England was given an overall grade of C-D, in the first Global Matrix of Grades examining fitness. Since then, of nine different measures used to rank activity levels and government strategies, four have worsened while the rest are unchanged, bringing its overall grade down to D minus.

.

Latest figures show childhood obesity has reached record levels, with one in 10 children obese when they start primary school, and one in five reaching that level by the end of it.

.

snip

.

Researchers said the typical modern lifestyle of spending a day in front of a computer, followed by an evening slumped in front of the television was proving fatal.

.

They also called for radical changes in government policies, to encourage healthier habits.

The war on fat is back, thanks to an aggressive campaign by food pundits related to sugar, GMOs and corporations.

.

For a while, it looked like all thin people were going to be placed into mandatory body image counseling, the Kardashians had made plump the new natural, but doctors have overruled activists like Michael Pollan and Marion Nestle and their beliefs about nutrition and affirmed that it's calories that matter, not the scary story of the week.

.

A new survey by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and NORC at the University of Chicago finds that 81 percent of Americans consider obesity to be the most serious health problem facing the nation, tying cancer as the top issue, ahead of diabetes (72 percent), heart disease (72 percent), mental illness (65 percent), and HIV/AIDS (46 percent). In 2011- 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports the prevalence of obesity was more than 36 percent in adults, a number that has grown significantly in the last 10 years.

.

The nationally representative survey of 1,509 adults was funded by ASMBS and used AmeriSpeak, the probability-based panel of NORC at the University of Chicago. It included oversamples of African Americans and Hispanics and was conducted between August 11 and September 21, 2016. The survey was done online as well as with landlines and cell phones with high rates of participation. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3.5 percentage points, though if you are skeptical of the science behind polling, you know in recent years how right you are.

.

Nearly everyone (94 percent) agrees that obesity itself increases the risk for an early death, even if no other health problems are present, according to the new poll. Yet, despite the seriousness with which they take the threat, the vast majority of Americans incorrectly perceive diet and exercise alone to be the most effective long-term weight loss method, and 1 in 3 of those struggling with obesity, report that they have never spoken with a doctor or health professional about their weight. Only 12 percent of those with severe obesity, for whom weight-loss surgery may be an option, say a doctor has ever suggested they consider surgery.

.

"This survey reveals that Americans understand the risks of obesity better than ever, but hold major misperceptions about the causes of the disease, the effectiveness of the different treatments and the importance of involving the medical community in their care," said Raul J. Rosenthal, MD, President, ASMBS and Chairman, Department of General Surgery, Cleveland Clinic Florida. "I think obesity may be the only life-threatening disease where more than a third of the patients do not consult a doctor for treatment, and where the vast majority do not explore other treatment options that may yield better long-term success rates."

Donald Trump is branded with all manner of unflattering labels, but one that hasnt seemed to much bother him is climate pariah.

.

The president-elect is unabashed in his disdain for Americas global warming policy. He has placed a staunch climate-change doubter and antagonist of mainstream science in charge of reshaping or as Trump has suggested, dismantling the Environmental Protection Agency. He has talked frequently about reneging on the historic Paris global climate treaty the U.S. took a lead in drafting. And he has said he wants every federal green-energy program eliminated.

.

Environmentalists take little comfort in Trumps recent comments that he accepts there is some connectivity between human activity and climate change and that he has an open mind about it, as what hes said elsewhere and done so far suggests otherwise.

.

And even those comments gave scientists cause for alarm. You can make a lot of cases for different views, Trump told the New York Times, casting doubt on the finding by more than 90% of climate scientists that emissions are accelerating global warming. Im not sure anybody is ever going to really know.

.

Yet few things on Trumps confrontational agenda put him more quickly on a collision course with the rest of the world, much of his own country and even some in his own party than his stated desire to abandon the fight against global warming. The looming assault on environmental regulation will test the resilience of Californias leadership role in the world, which is defined in large part by aggressive action on climate change that became a blueprint for the Obama administration.

.

Donald Trump will be about the only head of state who does not believe in climate science or the responsibility of his government to act, said Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, which signed up more members in the week after Trump won the election than during the rest of 2016 combined. This makes the Bush-Cheney administration look like it came from an environmental training camp.

.

But Trump may be picking a tougher fight than he knows. The last time the White House made the kind of retreat Trump envisions when President Bush walked away from the Kyoto protocol in 2001 the policy landscape of climate change was drastically different.

.

Much of the action on climate change in this country no longer plays out in federal agencies but at local commissions enforcing laws in 29 states that push public utilities to go green. Their mandates are to encourage investment in cleaner plants and technology development.

.

Major U.S. trading partners that signed on to the nearly 200-nation accord reached in Paris last year are already signaling that they will retaliate if the United States backs out, possibly by slapping environmental trade tariffs onto some American products.

.

Bailing on the deal could also increase the influence of China, itself once a chief climate pariah and now a green-energy powerhouse and lead instigator of international climate agreements. Trump is poised to create a leadership vacuum in the fight against climate change that would only expand Beijings reach, Chinese officials say.

.

None of those potential consequences faze the free-market think tanks urging Trump to go rogue. Just weeks ago, these groups were on the lonely fringe, pursuing an agenda written off as wacky by the mainstream science community, but now find themselves helping drive policy at the highest levels.

ANKARA (Reuters) - Forty-four people were killed and 103 injured when one Iranian passenger train collided with another at a station about 150 miles (250 km) east of the capital Tehran, state media reported.

I was sleeping when the crash happened. I thought it was an air strike ... When I opened my eyes, there was blood everywhere, a hospitalized passenger told state television.

State television footage showed four derailed carriages, two of them on fire and a spokesman forIrans Red Crescent, Mostafa Mortazavi, told the semi-official Fars news agency that firefighters were trying to control the blaze.

Senior Health Ministry official later announced via Tasnim news agency that rescue operations had been completed and the final death toll was 44.

The initial investigation suggests that a mechanical failure, possibly caused by cold weather, forced the express train, operating between the cities of Tabriz and Mashhad, to stop (at Haft-Khan), Khabbaz said.

.

Tabriz state governor Rahim Shohratifar told Tasnim that the moving train had 400 passengers. It was not clear how many passengers were on the stationary train. Fars earlier reported that 100 passengers had been rescued.

Four carriages derailed and two caught fire when a train that had broken down was hit by another train.

.

The accident happened in freezing temperatures early on Friday, 250km (150 miles) east of the capital Tehran.

.

The rescue effort is being hampered by the remote location, officials say. President Hassan Rouhani has ordered an inquiry into the cause of the crash.

.

The crash occurred in Iran's northern province of Semnan, on the main line between Tehran and Mashhad in the north-east.

Dylann Roof Found Competent for Trial in Charleston Church Killings

Dylann S. Roof, the self-avowed white supremacist who is accused of killing nine black parishioners at a Charleston, S.C., church in June 2015, is competent to stand trial, a federal judge ruled Friday.

.

Judge Richard M. Gergel of Federal District Court in Charleston did not explain his decision beyond writing that he had considered the record before the court, the relevant legal standards and the arguments of counsel. The judge did not release a transcript of a two-day closed hearing this week about Mr. Roofs condition, and he issued his factual findings under seal.

.

The ruling means that individual questioning of prospective jurors a process that was scheduled to start on Nov. 7 but was delayed when Mr. Roofs defense lawyers raised questions about his mental status will begin Monday.

.

The Justice Department is seeking the death penalty against Mr. Roof, 22, in the massacre on the night of June 17, 2015, during a Bible study session at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Roof, through his defense lawyers, has offered to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence, but prosecutors have refused to accept that deal, which would avert a trial on the 33-count federal indictment.

.

A lawyer for Mr. Roof, David I. Bruck, did not respond to a request for comment on Friday. He has refused to discuss his concerns about Mr. Roofs competency outside the closed proceedings, which Judge Gergel said were necessary to protect the defendants right to a fair trial by an impartial jury.
