BANGOR, Maine No peace til Cleveland? Just when some thought the infighting was over, Donald Trump once again is taking on former Republican rivals and traditionally conservative allies.

.

The GOP presumptive nominee, less than three weeks from the party's convention, told a crowd on Wednesday that he isn't happy that some of his former rivals aren't endorsing him and the way he sees it, there should be consequences.

.

Without naming specific politicians, Trump called those 2016 candidates who have yet to endorse him in accordance with the RNC pledge "sore losers" who "should never be allowed to run for public office again." Among those names yet to officially and explicitly endorse Trump are Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. Names that could, come next election cycle, be back in play once again.

.

For his part, Trump says he "would have honored the pledge" if the roles were reversed. "I wouldn't have gone crazy, I wouldn't have had 'Let's yell it from the loudest building,' but you know what, I would have honored the pledge."

.

Sources from both Kasich and Cruz camps told NBC last month that they aren't expecting to speak at the July convention in Kasich's home state of Ohio.

.

But Trump's fights with fellow conservatives didn't end there.

.

Taking on the traditionally GOP-friendly Chamber of Commerce, Trump repeatedly attacked the group, calling them "totally controlled by the special interest groups" and "various groups of people that don't care about you whatsoever." The chamber tweeted against Trump's anti-NAFTA message in the aftermath of his first major trade policy speech, saying that "NAFTA has NOT been a disaster for the United States."

Move Over, 'Trump U,'the New Scandal is the 'Trump Institute'

The scandal surrounding Trump University is already an albatross for Donald Trumps presidential campaign. The entire enterprise has been accused of being a con job, ripping off students who trusted the developers name.

.

But as it turns out, theres a new, related controversy surrounding the Trump Institute, which is something else. The New York Times reports today that the Republican candidate lent his name, and his credibility to this seminar business, which offered Trumps wealth-creating secrets and strategies for up to $2,000.

.

The truth was something else altogether.

.

As with Trump University, the Trump Institute promised falsely that its teachers would be handpicked by Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump did little, interviews show, besides appear in an infomercial one that promised customers access to his vast accumulated knowledge. I put all of my concepts that have worked so well for me, new and old, into our seminar, he said in the 2005 video, adding, Im teaching what Ive learned.

.

Reality fell far short. In fact, the institute was run by a couple who had run afoul of regulators in dozens of states and been dogged by accusations of deceptive business practices and fraud for decades. Similar complaints soon emerged about the Trump Institute.

.

Yet there was an even more fundamental deceit to the business, unreported until now: Extensive portions of the materials that students received after forking over their seminar fees, supposedly containing Mr. Trumps special wisdom, had been plagiarized from an obscure real estate manual published a decade earlier.

.

snip

.

Consider the revelations from recent weeks:

.

* Those who ran Trump University have faced credible allegations of stuffing their own pockets by preying on the vulnerable, selling unsuspecting students snake oil at indefensible prices and through misleading claims.

.

* Trump has boasted at great length about the millions of dollars hes given away through charitable donations though many of these donations dont appear to exist and many of the promises he made publicly went unfulfilled.

.

* A considerable chunk of Trumps campaign fundraising went to Trump corporate products and services, giving rise to a new word for the political lexicon: scampaign.

.

* And now the Trump Institute is facing allegations of being yet another fraudulent operation, complete with bogus claims, shady characters, and the theft of intellectual property at the ventures heart.

ISTANBUL Turkish police staged raids in at least two cities Thursday, detaining at least 13 suspects in connection with triple suicide bombings at an Istanbul airport that killed 42 people and raised fears of expanded Islamic State reach into Turkey.

.

Even as the country reeled from the violence, the assault on one of the worlds busiest airports and a symbol of Turkeys modern economy threatened to propel the country into a wider war with the Islamic State.

.

Counterterrorism units raided 16 addresses in Istanbul and launched operations in the coastal city of Izmir, the state-run Anadolu news agency said.

.

Three of those arrested in Istanbul are foreign nationals, according to the report. Another nine suspects were detained in Izmir for providing logistical support to the Islamic State, but it was unclear if they are directly tied to the attack.

.

There has been no claim of responsibility for Tuesday nights attack at Ataturk airport. But Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said in a televised speech late Wednesday that the government's assertion that the Islamic State is responsible "continues to gain weight."

.

Turkey's Interior Minister Efkan Ala also said there was no conclusive evidence, but early reports suggested the Sunni extremists were behind the bloodshed.

.

The identities of the three attackers, who opened fire on passengers at the international terminal before detonating suicide vests, are still unknown.

.

Every connection is being evaluated carefully, the Associated Press quoted Ala as saying.

.

Late Wednesday, 22-year-old Merve Yigit, a catering employee at the airport, died of her injuries to raise the death toll to 42, the AP reported. More than 230 people were injured.

.

On Wednesday, a senior Turkish official gave a timeline of the attack: First, a militant detonated explosives in the arrivals area on the ground floor of the international terminal. A second attacker exploded a bomb minutes later in the departures area upstairs. Finally, a third bomber detonated explosives in the parking area amid the chaos as people fled to escape the attacks inside.

Brexit Has Thrown the UK's Two Major Parties into Civil War

Updated by Zack Beauchamp

Vox

http://www.vox.com/2016/6/30/12064972/brexit-labour-tories-corbyn-johnson

.

.

In the past two days, both major political parties in the UK have fallen into complete and total chaos. You can blame Brexit.

.

On Tuesday, members of Parliament for the center-left Labour Party held a vote of no-confidence against their party leader, Jeremy Corbyn. The vote passed by an overwhelming 172-40 margin. While the vote doesnt topple Corbyn automatically, it shows that the Labour Party is currently in a state of civil war the anti-Corbyn faction is staging a coup, and Corbyn is fighting desperately to fend them off.

.

Then, on Thursday morning, Conservative Party firebrand and chief Brexit supporter Boris Johnson announced that he wouldnt be running for leadership of the party. The Conservatives currently have a majority in Parliament and run the UK government, so the party leader is also the prime minister.

.

The Conservatives need someone to replace incumbent Prime Minister David Cameron, a Brexit opponent who tendered his resignation after the vote. Johnson was the overwhelming favorite to take over. Now that hes withdrawn his name from contention, no one is quite sure whos going to lead Britain in the near future.

.

Why are both parties in such omnishambles? The answer in both cases is strikingly similar: The Brexit vote was a shattering event that brought out deep ideological fissures in both parties. Divisions that were previously papered over are now coming to the fore.

.

Now, nobody knows whos going to run Britain, or either of its two leading parties, at perhaps the most critical juncture in the countrys modern history.

.

The Conservative Party is stuck in a trap of its own making

.

The Conservative Party has been at odds with itself over Europe since the 1980s largely due to Margaret Thatcher, who was prime minister of the UK from 1979 to 1990. The changes ushered in by Thatcher are crucial for understanding why Brexit has collapsed the Conservative Party today.

.

Prior to Thatcher, the Tories (as members of the Conservative Party are often called) had been the more Euro-positive of the UKs two major parties. Conservatives saw greater European unity as a way to strengthen the UKs political influence vis-vis the rest of Europe. Most skepticism came from the Labour Partys left flank, which saw the move toward supranationalism as an international capitalist effort to weaken the welfare state (more on that in a minute).

.

Thatcher, by contrast, became a vocal critic of European integration while in office. She saw Europes drive for unity as exactly the kind of big-government initiative she so famously opposed at home.

.

"We have not successfully rolled back the frontiers of the state in Britain, only to see them re-imposed at a European level, with a European super-state exercising a new dominance from Brussels," Thatcher said in a famous 1988 speech in Bruges.

.

Her vocal criticism of European unity infuriated members of her own party, contributing to an uprising that ended her premiership in 1990. But her influence was lasting: After Thatcher, the Euroskeptic wing of the Tories has grown in strength considerably.

.

Increased European integration as well as higher rates of immigration to the UK have created a sort of nativist, isolationist backlash among British conservatives, fueling both Tory Euroskepticism and the rise of the hard-right third party the UK Independence Party (UKIP).

.

But despite the growing prominence of the Euroskeptics, theyve never gotten a chance to actually lead the country. Cameron, who sounded sympathetic to the Euroskeptics during his campaign for party leadership in 2005, actually ended up governing as something of a Europhile. He famously told his party to "stop banging on about Europe," and led the Tory campaign against Brexit.

.

The Brexit referendums victory, however, is a clear mandate for the Euroskeptics.

Britain's Political Chaos Makes Brexit All the More Confusing

What a weird few days in Britain. As the country -- and the continent eyeing it warily across the Channel -- attempted to come to grips with the fallout of last week's vote to leave the European Union, its political parties imploded in a frenzy of backstabbing and internecine struggle.

.

snip

.

First, there was the no-confidence vote against Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, whose lackluster support of the Remain campaign infuriated many of his fellow colleagues in the opposition. Corbyn's decision to fight for his post -- backed by much of Labour's more leftist rank-and-file -- has triggered "what will likely be an ugly and protracted war for the partys soul," writes The Washington Post's Griff Witte.

.

Then, there were the Conservatives. The victory of the pro-Brexit camp compelled British Prime Minister David Cameron, leader of the failed movement to remain, to announce his resignation. On Thursday, Boris Johnson, the former mayor of London and the most mainstream politician leading the Leave camp, began the day assuming it would mark the first step toward his coronation as Cameron's successor.

.

But there was a sting in the tail in the form Johnson's longterm friend and deputy, the bespectacled, bookish conservative politician and former journalist Michael Gove.

.

As Johnson prepared to announce his candidacy, Gove betrayed him without notice, announcing that he was launching his own campaign to helm the Conservative Party and thereby become prime minister. The insurrection earned comparisons to backroom maneuvering in "House of Cards" and prompted Johnson to withdraw his candidacy, leaving Britain totally befuddled.

.

"This one stunned an already dazed nation, and left no doubt, if any had remained, that Britain is divided, directionless and leaderless as it prepares for a leap into the unknown of life outside the E.U.," wrote Witte.

.

There's a somewhat crowded field of candidates to now follow Cameron. The Post's London correspondent Karla Adam wrote profiles of the two at the head of the pack: Gove and Theresa May, 59, who commands perhaps the most support from sitting Conservative parliamentarians.

.

Observers weren't impressed by Johnson's retreat. The flamboyant, mop-headed former mayor had championed the Leave campaign and won a narrow victory in last week's referendum -- a result some pundits say he never had anticipated.

.

Boris engineered the largest constitutional crisis in post-war history but wont even put his name forward to clear it up? tweeted University of Manchester political scientist Rob Ford.

Gove and Johnson: What Happened?

Laura Kuenssberg

Political editor

30 June 2016

From the section UK Politics

BBC News

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-36679738

.

.

There is suspicion and mistrust in the air tonight in the Tory party.
Everyone is trying to work out exactly what happened that led Michael Gove to break his word and launch his own campaign to become the next prime minister, leaving Boris Johnson, who he has known for decades stunned, and defeated.

.

Of course, only the two men really know what happened. As I write, they still have not spoken to each other.

.

As you know, from time to time, it's worth passing on the conspiracy theories that will never be proven or otherwise in Westminster. At the end of one of the most astonishing days in politics for years, here are three different accounts I've heard today of what went on.

.

The truth is probably a mixture of them all. But for the conspiracists out there, here goes, and neither camp would officially deny or confirm any of the scenarios below.

.

Conspiracy One

.

Michael Gove was always a "cuckoo" in the Boris Johnson campaign team. He arrived at the Johnson's farmhouse on Sunday after the two men had done a deal on Saturday night that Mr Gove would co-chair his campaign. They had also agreed, I'm told, that he would be Boris Johnson's chancellor if he moved into Number 10.

.

But he arrived with his advisers in tow, having tipped off the press as to the location and timing of the meeting. At that meeting, it's claimed that Mr Gove's team demanded the list of Boris Johnson's supporters, but his campaign team refused to hand over the spreadsheet with the names of their backers.

.

It's suggested that Mr Gove then leaked the story to the Telegraph that George Osborne would be Mr Johnson's foreign secretary, and demanded that his former adviser, Dominic Cummings, be given a senior role in Number 10.

.

Then yesterday an email miraculously made its way into the public domain, written by Mr Gove's wife, Sarah Vine, that urged him to demand a significant role and to stand up to Mr Johnson. People close to Mr Johnson just don't believe that all those things were a coincidence. They claim "it was an operation" from the start and they suspect that George Osborne's influence may be behind it.

.

"It was proper treachery," they say, and as soon as Mr Gove announced this morning, MPs described as the "inner circle gang" all peeled off and withdrew their support for Mr Johnson.

Donald Trump Starts a Trade War - with the Republican Party

The unusual battle between Donald Trump and much of the Republican establishment on international trade is rapidly escalating, as the presumptive GOP nominee rails against business groups and members of his own party while defenders of sweeping free-trade pacts rebuke him.

.

The rift deepened on Thursday when Trump called out the U.S. Chamber of Commerce by name for the second straight day and pilloried the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, two landmark trade agreements broadly supported by Republicans.

.

Im messing with bad deals that we could make good, Trump said in his speech at a shuttered manufacturing plant in Manchester, N.H. I could make good deals. Why would somebody fight that? I mean, the U.S. Chamber fights. They said, Oh, Trump wants to stop free trade. I dont want to stop free trade. I love free trade, but I want to make great deals.

.

The moguls comments followed a flurry of insults throughout the week aimed at advocates of broad trade accords, which have been championed by Republican leaders for decades as crucial engines of capitalism. Trump accused TPP backers, for example, of wanting to rape the United States.

.

For Trump, feuding with powerful business interests makes him an attractive candidate for many disaffected working-class voters, including some who have supported Democrats in the past.

.

But the loud dispute also risks alienating many of the Republican Partys wealthy benefactors at a time when he is struggling to kick his long-dormant fundraising operation into gear. A stridently protectionist message could also push some moderate Main Street Republicans to support Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, in much the same way that many Republicans in the foreign policy world have done.

[Wonkblog: Donald Trumps trade war could kill millions of U.S. jobs]

===============================

Many business groups, which generally favor looser trade restrictions and are traditional Republican allies, have taken sharp issue with Trumps latest comments and appear determined to rebut them.

.

While we never endorse in the presidential race, we do plan to be aggressive in presidential policy with both major party nominees, said Scott Reed, the senior political strategist at the Chamber of Commerce. The group repudiated Trump in real time on Tuesday in a series of tweets as he delivered an address threatening to tear up trade accords and impose tariffs.

.

Trump has long blamed broad trade agreements for harming U.S. workers. But this week has marked a rhetorical shift as he aggressively casts members of both parties who have supported trade deals as anti-American and in league with special interests.

Vermonts GMO Labeling Law Is Now In Effect.
Here Are The Labels The Senate Is Trying To Get Rid Of

July 1, 2016

.

.

Its July 1, 2016, which means that Vermonts controversial rules for labeling certain products containing genetically modified ingredients (GMOs) is now in effect. With both the supermarket industry and agribusiness-backed Senators trying to defeat this law in court and on Capitol Hill, we took a field trip to Vermont this morning to see just what the labels look like in the real world.

.

The final rule [PDF] requires labels on or near various types of packaged and unpackaged foods. It does, however, provide manufacturers with what is effectively a few months grace period, as any packaged, processed foods currently without the label will until the end of the year be presumed to have been produced before the July 1 deadline. So if a Vermont shopper sees a bag of potato chips in December that doesnt have the label, the producer of those chips would not be in violation of the law.

.

That said, we did find a number of products on store shelves that are already in compliance with the rules.

.

There were, as we expected, products from companies like PepsiCos Frito-Lay group that began making this change on a nationwide basis a couple of months in advance of the July 1 deadline.

.

Another company that made the nationwide change earlier this year is Campbell Soup, so we were not surprised to see some labeled Spaghetti-Os. Likewise, General Mills jumped on the labeling wagon months ago, so its Progresso soups are already labeled.

.

snip

.

As mentioned above, the Vermont rule is under attack on both the legal and legislative fronts. Its been two years since a grocery industry trade group sued to stop the labeling law from being enacted, yet the Second Circuit Court of Appeals has yet to issue a decision on the matter, even though it heard oral arguments nearly eight months ago.

.

More recently, theres been a bipartisan effort led by two senators who have received a total of more than $2.1 million from agribusiness donors in just this election cycle to push through new legislation that would:

.

Override the Vermont law and any other state rules on GMO labeling.

.

Eventually in at least two years; likely more create a national standard for labeling that states could not attempt to make more strict at the local level.

.

Create a standard that would not require any disclosure on the affected products. Instead, the disclosure could be nothing more than a barcode, text website link, or phone number.

.

Much like the earlier, failed so-called DARK Act, which would have created a voluntary labeling national labeling standard, this newest piece of legislation was able to skip much of the usual legislative red tape by having Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell present it [PDF] as an amendment to an earlier Senate bill to defund Planned Parenthood (a bill that was originally intended to reauthorize the National Sea Grant College program). The amendment wiped out all the existing text of the previous legislation, including the DARK Act text, leaving only the new GMO labeling bill.

.

The new legislation sailed through its first major procedural test earlier this week, on a vote of 69-28. After the July 4th holiday, its expected that the Senate will take a cloture vote on whether to end debate on the bill; 60 votes would be needed for it to then move on for one final Senate vote.

Vermont became the first state Friday to require the labeling of food containing GMOs, or genetically modified organisms.

.

Vermont had the courage to say ... If its the right thing to do, what are we waiting for, Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin said to cheers from a rally audience of about 150 people on the Statehouse steps.

.

Vermont Sen. Sanders sharply criticized the compromise bill in Congress that called for less stringent regulations, and said the bill has several shortcomings. The Senate is expected to vote on the bill next week.

.

The federal legislation would allow an electronic code on a package to stand in for a label, requiring a smartphone and internet connection for a consumer to know whether the product contained genetically modified ingredients, Sanders said. Many products, including corn products, beet sugar and soy oils that are in many processed foods, could be exempt from the requirement, he added.

.

Perhaps most shockingly and what exposes the partial nature of this legislation, this bill imposes no penalties whatsoever for violating the labeling requirement, making the legislation essentially meaningless, Sanders said.

.

Vermonts law imposes a penalty of $1,000 per day per genetically modified product that is not labeled as required.

.

At the Hunger Mountain Co-op in Montpelier, which specializes in natural foods and local products, general manager Kari Bradley said it was frustrating that a state law the cooperative has supported since its inception in the legislature might be erased from the books by federal action.

.

He said food co-ops elsewhere in the country cheered them on but their states didnt have the political climate to pass a labeling law. The federal bill is not a solution thats in the spirit of the Vermont law, he said.

What Senate Backers Aren't Saying about the GMO "Compromise" Bill

Last week, Sens. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) and Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) announced what they bill as a compromise deal that would label GMO foods across the nation. But the advocacy groups that have fought so long and hard for clear GMO labeling arent cheering: They know the bill is a gift to the agribusiness and biotech industriesnot a compromise. Thats why consumer advocates have dubbed the bill the Denying Americans the Right to Know (DARK) Act.

.

Heres what the backers of the bill dont want their constituents to know about the DARK Act:

.

The Bill Is Not a National Labeling Solution.

.

The backers of the Senate bill are portraying this as a big victory for those of us who dont live in Vermont, which passed a GMO labeling law that goes into effect today. (The Senate committees Twitter feed even posted a map showing that their bill would spread Vermont-style labeling across all 50 states.) But this is a misleading claim.

.

The Vermont law is about clear, on-package labeling, but thats not what the Senate is proposing. This bill is not about expanding GMO labeling; its about preventing states like Vermont from taking action. As the bill states, it would "immediately prohibit states or other entities from mandating labels of food or seed that is genetically engineered.

Additional topics covered in this article:

The Bill Does Not Clearly Label GMOs.

The Bill Has No Penalties for Violators.

The Bill Does Not Cover All Genetically Engineered Food Ingredients.

The Bill Benefits Corporations, Not Consumers

The industry has been chomping at the bit to repeal Vermonts law. This bill does that. The industry has long said GMO labels should be voluntary, meaning companies get to decide how much information consumers get. Thats precisely what this bill doesputs all the power in the hands of food companies, while ensuring that consumers are left wondering what is in their food. This bill is no compromiseits a gift to agribusiness and biotechnology companies that have fought popular, state-based labeling initiatives for the past five years.

.

Americans should know thiseven if Senate backers of the bill refuse to say it.

Welch: Senate GMO Proposal 'Kind of Stupid'

On the day Vermonts GMO labeling law went into effect, state political leaders vowed to fight congressional efforts to circumvent the regulations.

Gov. Peter Shumlin, a champion of the legislation, led a rally on the Statehouse lawn featuring the congressional delegation and members of VPIRG, an environmental group.

This is a true David and Goliath story, a small state fighting against Big Food, Big Ag, Big Business, and Big Money in Washington, Shumlin said. We knew when we signed it that wed have challenges, but we set up the Vermont Food Fight Fund and all of us said We will take them on.

Vermont is the first state to require food companies to label products with genetically engineered ingredients. The Grocery Manufacturers Association and others sued the state over the mandate, and there are ongoing efforts in Congress to derail the state labeling mandate, Act 120.

A new Senate bill would require disclosure of genetically modified organisms in food products nationwide through a barcode or QR code, instead of a label. Consumers would need a smartphone with a code reader to determine whether a food has GMO ingredients.

The proposal was roundly criticized by all three members of Vermonts congressional delegation, who vowed to fight the bill.

U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., said the Senate proposal is kind of stupid.

A lot of my colleagues who were against this down in Washington were bragging about how great GMOs were, Welch said. So I said I hear ya, but if its so great what they are why dont you want to brag about it by putting it on the label?

You know what? Welch continued, They didnt have an answer.

THUNDER BAY The impact of climate change is already having impacts on Northern Canada. Winter road seasons are shorter. Wild weather has brought massive rainfalls and flooding to Kenora and Thunder Bay this summer.

.

There is a serious challenge being put on lakes, rivers and streams as a result of the changing climate.

.

Climate change is already affecting inland fish across North America including some fish that are popular with anglers. Scientists are seeing a variety of changes in how inland fish reproduce, grow and where they can live, according to four new studies published today in a special issue of Fisheries magazine.

.

Fish that have the most documented risk include those living in arid environments and coldwater species such as sockeye salmon, lake trout, walleye, and prey fish that larger species depend on for food.

.

Climate change can cause suboptimal habitat for some fish; warmer water, for example, can stress coldwater fish. When stressed, fish tend to eat less and grow less. For other fish, climate change is creating more suitable habitat; smallmouth bass populations, for example, are expanding.

.

These changes will have direct implications some good, some bad for recreational fishers, who, in the United States alone, contributed nearly $700 million in revenue to state agencies through license, tag, stamp, and permit purchases in 2015. Annually, anglers spend about $25 billion on trips, gear, and equipment related to recreational fishing in U.S. freshwaters.

.

Climate Change is Affecting North American Fish

.

The U.S. Geological Survey and partners are working to provide a fuller and more comprehensive picture of climate change impacts on North American fish for managers, scientists, and the public alike, said Abigail Lynch, a lead author and fisheries biologist with the USGS National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center.

.

The authors reviewed 31 studies across North America and Canada that document fish responses to climate change. The manuscripts describe the impacts of climate change to individual fish, populations, recreational fishers, and fisheries managers. One of the takeaway messages is that climate change effects on fish are rarely straightforward, and they affect warmwater and coldwater fish differently.

.

Thanks to this synthesis, we can see the effects of climate change on inland fish are no longer just future speculation, but todays facts, with real economic, social, and ecological impacts, said Doug Austen, Executive Director of the American Fisheries Society and publisher of Fisheries magazine. Now that trends are being revealed, we can start to tease apart the various stressors on inland fish and invest in conservation and research where these programs will really make a difference in both the short and long term.

Antarctica's Penguins Could be Decimated by Climate Change

For millions of years, fluctuating climates have impacted Adie penguins, which breed on ice-free, rocky ground.

.

Colder climates and expanding glaciers led penguins to abandon ice-covered breeding habitats. Warming climates and melting glaciers meant more breeding territory for these penguins, one of only two true Antarctic penguin species. (Emperor penguins are the other.)

.

But warming may have reached a tipping point and the Adie penguin population could be decimated.

.

Thats according to a study published this week in the journal Scientific Reports, which estimates that Adie colonies could decline by as much as 60 percent by the end of the century.

.

It is only in recent decades that we know Adie penguins population declines are associated with warming, which suggests that many regions of Antarctica have warmed too much and that further warming is no longer positive for the species, the papers lead author, University of Delaware researcher Megan Cimino, said in a statement.

.

These penguins breed on the entire Antarctic continent.

.

Other penguins breed on the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, which scientists warn is quickly warming.

.

The Adie penguin is already undergoing population declines on the West Antarctic Peninsula, one of the fastest-warming places on the planet.

.

But elsewhere on the continent, in places where the climate has remained stable or even cooled, the penguin population has been stable or even increased.

.

While in the past, Adie penguin populations were positively affected by warming and negatively affected by cooling, the authors write, this study suggests that in many regions of Antarctica climate warming has tipped past peak suitability so that further warming is no longer beneficial to Adie penguins.

.

In particular, climate change could decrease the quality and availability of nesting grounds and food.

.

Adie penguins build their nests with pebbles on terrain free of ice and snow. Eggs and chicks need to be kept dry and out of water.

.

Warming climates could bring more rain, or prematurely melting snow or ice, meaning more wet terrain.

.

For penguins who lay their eggs on the ground, Cimino told National Geographic, rain and puddles are bad because eggs cant survive when theyre lying in a pool of water. Chicks that dont have waterproof feathers can become wet and die from hypothermia.

Are Fewer Women in Exercise Studies Because of Their Periods?

.

.

Women are underrepresented in exercise and sports medicine research when compared to men, a new editorial suggests.

.

One reason may be that women's periods throw things off for exercise researchers: "The complexities of the menstrual cycle are considered major barriers to [women's] inclusion in clinical trials," the authors of the editorial, who are experts in Europe and the United States, wrote in their article, published online today (June 6) in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

.

Research on how the menstrual cycle may affect women's exercise training and performance is lacking, said Georgie Bruinvels, a doctoral student in the division of surgery and interventional science at University College London and the lead author of the editorial.

.

When research is conducted on women who exercise, it is often limited. For example, women are often only tested when they are at a specific phase of the menstrual cycle, typically when hormone levels are low, Bruinvels said. Or, studies may include only women who take birth control pills, and some researchers just completely ignore the possible impact of the menstrual cycle on female study participants in their analysis, she explained.

.

"Women athletes have to compete at all phases of their menstrual cycles, yet currently only a snapshot of time is being researched," Bruinvels told Live Science. More studies are needed to evaluate how the cyclical variations in female reproductive hormones may impact physiological processes and women's athletic performance, she said.

.

For example, women who are ovulating have high levels of estrogen, and this may mean their strength levels are different than they are during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, when they have high levels of both estrogen and progesterone, Bruinvels said.

.

Gender gap

.

An earlier study also found a gender gap in sports medicine research. In that study, researchers looked at exercise studies published in three major sports medicine journals between 2011 and 2013, and found that 39 percent of all of the participants were women, and 61 percent were men, according to the findings published in the European Journal of Sport Science in 2014.

.

The reasons for this gender gap are unclear. Historically, all types of medical research including drug trials were once exclusively done on men because of concerns over potential damage to a woman's reproductive health, Bruinvels said.

A disabled Tennessee teen was trying to make it home to celebrate the end of her brain cancer treatment last year but instead she was bloodied and bruised by Memphis airport security and locked up in jail for a night, a new lawsuit says.

.

Hannah Cohen, 19, was traveling home to Chattanooga, Tenn. on June 30, 2015 after receiving a final round of radiation for a brain tumor at St. Judes hospital when she set off the the metal detector at the Memphis International Airport.

.

TSA agents told Hannah they needed to take her to a sterile area where they could search her, but the disabled teen was confused and tried to get away from the officers, her mother, Shirley Cohen, said.

.

Observing the situation escalate, her mother attempted to explain to the officers that the teen was impaired from radiation treatment, which left her deaf, blind in one eye and partially paralyzed, her familys attorneys said.

.

She is a St. Judes patient and she can get confused Shirley Cohen attempted to tell them, but was restrained. Please be gentle. If I could help her, it will make things better, Cohen tried to say, according to the Guardian.

.

Cohen then watched the unfolding scuffle which left her disoriented daughter wounded.

.

One of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor. There was blood everywhere, Cohen told WREG News.

.

Cohen reached for her phone as it came off the securitys conveyor belt, and snapped a photo of Hannahs bloodied face as she cried in anguish.

.

I felt so helpless. I sat down on a bench facing away so I couldnt see what they were doing to my daughter, Cohen told the Guardian.

.

Hannah was cuffed and booked overnight in a Memphis jail instead of flying home and was reunited a day later in the jails parking lot, the suit says.

.

Cohen told the Guardian that her daughter collapsed in her arms and cried, saying Im sorry, Mama.

.

A judge who saw Hannahs injuries the next day tossed the charges against her and refunded the familys $250 in court fees.

19-year-old Hannah Cohen and her mother Shirley are suing the TSA over an incident that occurred about a year ago when the then 18-year-old was beaten by agents while attempting to go through security at Memphis international airport.

.

Hannah and her mother were attempting to fly to Chattanooga for the holidays, a trip Shirley claims they made hundreds of times. Hannah is a patient at St. Judes hospital in Memphis, where she is being treated for a brain tumor. Hannah and Shirley told The Guardian that Hannahs condition left her easily confused and frightened in unfamiliar situations.

.

On June 30, 2015, Hannah set off the alarm on the airport body scanner as she went through security. Her and her mother believe it was because of the sequins on her shirt, which she offered to remove since she had another shirt on underneath. A female TSA agent allegedly laughed at the suggestion. Meanwhile, Shirley, who had already gone through security attempted to inform agents about Hannahs condition.

Family Sues After Disabled Teen Beaten Bloody at Memphis Airport

According to the lawsuit, airport security threw the 19-year-old to the ground after she refused to go back through a metal detector.

Brooke Binkowski

Snopes

.

10. The Plaintiff, Hannah Cohen, is an individual who has a physical and mental impairment that substantially limit one or more of her life activities and has a record of such impairment. She had this physical and mental impairment on June 30, 2015 and before.

.

11. More particularly, the Plaintiff, Hannah Cohen, has damage from radiation and removal of a brain tumor that substantially limits her ability to speak, walk, stand, see, hear, care for herself, learn and work, think, concentrate, and interact with others.

.

12. This substantial limitation on her life activity by the radiation and removal of the brain tumor causes her to be significantly limited in the ability the life activities listed above compared to the manner, duration, and conditions which individuals are able to perform these activities. This substantial limitation is obvious on sight and was obvious on June 30, 2016.

.

When Hannah Cohen went through airport security, she apparently set off the metal detectors. When she was approached by TSA workers, she became disoriented and confused and refused to go through the scanner again.

.

The lawsuit details that her mother tried to intervene, but to no avail:

.

16. The Plaintiff, Shirley Cohen, repeatedly tried to tell the personnel manning the security checkpoint of her daughter's brain tumor and disabilities. However, the personnel at the security checkpoint refused to listen to the Plaintiff, Shirley Cohen, concerning her daughter's disability. They proceeded to assault the Plaintiff, Hannah Cohen, at the checkpoint, causing her physical and emotional injury as well as emotional injury to the Plaintiff, Shirley Cohen as she witnessed the assault on her daughter.

.

Shirley Cohen snapped a photograph of her daughter on the ground before she says she was pushed away by security. Hannah Cohen was arraigned on "various charges," which were later dropped in their entirety:

.

The next morning now two days without their belongings, which had made the flight home the pair appeared before a local judge, who asked the accused to explain herself.

.

When Hannah responded, the judge said: Youre going to have to speak up.

.

Thats when Hannah looked up and her hair fell back from her face, revealing her unseeing eye, surrounded by cuts and contusions.

.

The judges eyes got big and round, Shirley said.

.

After inquiring if the pair were from Memphis, the judge recommended they get legal representation.

Chattanooga mom sues TSA for slamming her disabled daughter's head into the ground

Cohen, who is blind in her left eye and deaf in her left ear, is impaired from radiation and removal of a brain tumor, and is limited in her ability to talk, walk, stand, see and hear. Her mother, Shirley Cohen, says she begged Transportation Security Administration screeners to let her help her disabled daughter through the checkpoint, but she said they called for backup instead.

.

"They were grabbing her from both sides," Shirley Cohen alleged Friday. "One of them slammed her down, hit her head on the cement, and there was blood everywhere."

.

As two agents thrust their knees into her daughter's back and clapped handcuffs around her wrists, another agent grabbed Shirley Cohen and pulled her away from her daughter, she said.

.

Later, in an interrogation room, a TSA agent told her that her daughter had struck one of the agents, and the agency was going to press charges, Cohen said. After a night in the hospital with two guards standing watch outside the door, officers booked her daughter into jail.

.

Though prosecutors eventually dropped the charges and refunded her bail bond, Cohen said that hardly justifies the way her daughter was treated.

.

Though Hannah Cohen is now tumor-free, her run-in with the Memphis screeners shattered her life. The 19-year-old has now graduated from high school and started taking classes at Chattanooga State Community College, but she's since dropped out of school and is taking a semester off.

.

The family lives in Harrison, just north of Chattanooga.

.

"The stress of all this, she wasn't able to continue full-time hours so she lost her scholarship," her mother said.

.

In a lawsuit filed on June 28 that named the TSA and the various agencies that manage the airport as defendants, Cohen asked for damages not to exceed $100,000 for violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as negligent infliction of emotional distress.

.

In the lawsuit, Cohen alleges that the TSA didn't provide any reasonable accommodation for screening given Hannah Cohen's disability, and assaulted her in the airport without cause.

.

"They think they are above the law," she said. "The one time they let me go back [into her daughter's hospital room] to take her some food, one of them was grinning at me the whole time, and I was like, 'We'll see.'"

The lawsuit says an alarm went off as she and her mother were going through a security checkpoint operated by the Memphis International Airport Police Department and the Transportation Safety Administration. Hannah Cohen became disoriented by the alarm and the security workers attempts to search her, the lawsuit says.

.

The security personnel failed to recognize that she was confused because of her obvious disability and was unable to cooperate with the search, Cohens lawyers, Kelly Pearson and William Hardwick, wrote in the lawsuit.

.

Her mother, Shirley Cohen, said she tried to tell TSA agents about her daughters disability, but she was kept away by police.

.

Shes trying to get away from them but in the next instant, one of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor. There was blood everywhere, Shirley Cohen told WREG-TV.

.

The lawsuit alleges the security personnel assaulted Hannah Cohen at the checkpoint, causing her physical and emotional injury as well as emotional injury to her mother.

.

Hannah Cohen was arrested, but the charges were later dropped. The family filed a federal lawsuit against the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority and the TSA for damages that include pain, medical expenses, personal and emotional injury, and embarrassment.

.

The lawsuit alleges that the TSA and airport police discriminated against Cohen because of her disability and failed to provide reasonable accommodation for screening her. The suit asks for a reasonable sum not exceeding $100,000 and costs.

What brave TSA agents we have. Did they give a medal to the hero who threw the little girl to the ground and busted her head open?

There have been so many outrages committed by TSA personnel over the years that we've become inured to their incompetence and arrogance. What it comes down to is this: the culture in the TSA ecourages a lack of accountability, promotion of managers who deserve to be fired, poor training of agents, and an entitled arrogance from top to bottom.

And the traveling public are the victims.

A new analysis of Vermont State Police data shows that racial disparities in traffic stops have increased in the five years from 2011 to 2015.

.

A similar analysis commissioned by state police, and released in May, showed that minority drivers are stopped, cited and searched by the Vermont State Police at a higher rate than white drivers. It also found white drivers were more likely than minorities to receive a warning, rather than a citation.

.

At the same time, a new report from The Sentencing Project, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group, shows Vermont is one of five states where black people are incarcerated at more than 10 times the rate of white people, which is double the national average.

.

One of the primary differences between the analysis of traffic stop data commissioned by state police and the analysis released Thursday by UVMs Dr. Stephanie Seguino, is that Seguino looks at data from year-to-year, instead of aggregating the five years of data.

.

What we wanted to see is are these disparities shrinking or growing? Seguino said in an interview.

.

What we find is the trends arent getting any better, and in some cases theyre worsening, she said.

.

For instance, the search rate for black drivers went from 3.6 percent in 2011 to 5.1 percent in 2015, hitting a high of 6 percent in 2014, while the search rate for white drivers remained roughly 1 percent during those five years.

Vermont Becomes 8th State to Confirm It Stops More Blacks Than Whites in Traffic Stops, Implicit Bias to Blame

Loads of traffic-stop data collected by the Vermont State Police over the last five years confirms an occurrence Black Americans are all too familiar with. A recent report revealed stark disparities between the rates at which Black drivers were stopped by Vermont police compared to whites.

.

snip

.

Per a study conducted by the Institute on Race and Justice at Bostons Northeastern University, the percentage of traffic-stops resulting in searches was 5.1 for Blacks and 1.1 for whites. The study also revealed that contraband was found 80 percent of the time in searches involving white drivers, but only 68.5 percent of the time with Black drivers, the news site states.

.

States, including Vermont, began compiling traffic-stop data after a 1990s racial profiling controversy involving New Jersey state troopers, the New York Times reports. The officers had targeted minority drivers for traffic-stops in hopes of catching drug runners.

.

snip

.

In Greensboro, North Carolinas third largest city, officers were found to have used their discretion to search African-American drivers or their vehicles more than twice as often than white drivers, the New York Times reports. Yet, contraband like illicit drugs and firearms were found much more often when a white motorist was searched.

.

Col. Matthew Birmingham of the Vermont State Police blames implicit bias on the part of police officers, ABC News reports. He says although implicit bias is harder to recognize and root out, acknowledging that you have a bias is a good start to moving these numbers in a positive direction.

.

The disproportionate risks of driving while Black dont stop there however.

A suburban Chicago high school made headlines earlier this year after its principal barred an African-American student from prom over an offensive poem she read at a talent show. Now, it looks like that principal is out of a job.

.

Homewood-Flossmoor Principal Ryan Pitcock was fired Tuesday at a school board meeting, the Chicago Tribune reports. Pitcocks termination prompted the resignation of school board member David Mayer.

.

The official reason for the principals firing remains unknown, but it comes just weeks after Pitcock banned 18-year-old student Taiylar Ball from attending prom. He claimed Ball used profanity and offensive language in a poem she read at the school talent show titled Dear Black Girls.
Youre only feeling me when my chocolate skin is shining with coconut oil, flexing with my t*ts out on Twitter, Ball said in a line of her poem. According to The Root, she also used the word nigga while speaking on the misogyny and disrespect of Black women.

.

Ball said she was asked to leave school following her performance and later received a call saying she wasnt allowed to attend prom. When she showed up to the soir anyway, district officials turned her away at the door, the Chicago Tribune reports.

.

Amid the backlash, Homewood-Flossmoors director of human resources and public relations, Jodi Bryant, issued a statement that read, There were many amazing performances at the talent show, including this students powerfully written and delivered spoken word. It is unfortunate that it included additional content that was not previously approved by the audition committee at the dress rehearsal and was not within the schools guidelines.

.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Ball admitted her poem wasnt finished until the day of the talent show, so the audition committee didnt have a chance to review it. She later acknowledged she shouldve reached out for approval, but said the sponsor who knew she hadnt finished the piece also should have contacted her prior to the performance.
We both dropped the ball, the high school senior told local paper the Daily Southtown.
