12 New Job Hunt Strategies That'll Re-Energize Your Search
          The Muse
          https://www.themuse.com/advice/12-new-job-hunt-strategies-thatll-reenergize-your-search
          1. Focus First on Companies—Not Openings
          2. Meet the Moderators
          3. Check Out Offline Jobs
          4. Expand Your Network

“Most job seekers focus on networking with colleagues and people in their industry, but neglect to talk to other people in their lives. This doesn’t mean that you should lead off every conversation with the news that you’re on the hunt, but you can strive to work it into conversation in a natural way. Neighbors, acquaintances from the dog park, people in your rec soccer league—any or all of these contacts may have knowledge or connections that could prove helpful.”

5. Foster Your Relationships
          6. Attend Events Outside Your Industry
          7. Make a Human Connection
          8. Build and Send a Newsletter
          9. Bypass HR—if Possible
          10. Confirm That the Listing’s Active
          11. Converse With Leaders
          12. Host a Job-Search Party

            Networking isn’t job searching  01 . 19 . 2016   Job search

By Workopolis
        https://careers.workopolis.com/advice/networking-isnt-job-searching/

“One of our correspondents sent me an article yesterday called, “You’re not working because you’re not networking.”
Which is kind of a catchy title to say out loud. But the point of her piece was that the number one job search strategy
that people who are out of work should be employing is networking.I haven’t published that story yet, because I worried
that on some level it could be misleading to people who are actually looking for employment. The fact is that if you suddenly
find yourself without a job, you can’t at that moment decide to start networking and connect your way into a new one.”

And that’s why networking isn’t a job search strategy.

“So should you be networking?  By all means. Speak with people in your industry, or in the industry you want to work in.
Find opportunities to participate in events or activities. See how you can develop the in-demand skills, and demonstrate your
knowledge of these to relevant contacts.”

Networking essentials
Keep in touch with your network.
Make sure your social network information matches your resume.
Pay it forward.
Talk to people in your industry.

“Over the past 12 months I’ve been asking people how they found their most recent job.
(Here’s the link to the survey.) About 3,000 people have responded so far, most of whom
are in staff or management roles. The results are shown in the graphic.”

Networking Rules!
Start by reading Harvard Prof Todd Rose’s new book, The End of Average.
Recognize that LinkedIn is a network of 400 million people, not just a database of them.
Demonstrate the ability to do the work, not pass some assessment test, to get the interview.
Be different. If you do what everyone else does you’ll get average results.

“Lou Adler (@LouA) is the CEO of The Adler Group, a consulting and training firm helping companies
implement Performance-based Hiring. He's also a regular columnist for Inc. Magazine and
Business Insider. His latest book, The Essential Guide for Hiring & Getting Hired (Workbench, 2013),
provides hands-on advice for job-seekers, hiring managers and recruiters on how to find the best job
and hire the best people. His new video program provides job seekers inside secrets on what it takes
to get a job in the hidden job market.”

"Your resume represents you as a professional on a piece of paper – it is your first impression with your future boss. Interestingly, resume writing is not a skill that is generally taught in school so once you are ready to start looking for a job, you are left to fend for yourself. In this age of technology, most people search the internet. There is an overabundance of information available online, yet very little of it is helpful and if you decide to take matters into your own hands, it is difficult to figure out where to start.

Start by putting together the content: work experience, summary of qualifications, achievements, education, keywords and any other important information that makes a powerful resume."

History of the Dictionary

ODLIS began at the Ruth Haas Library in 1994 as a four-page printed handout titled Library Lingo, intended
for undergraduates not fluent in English and for English-speaking students unfamiliar with basic library terminology.
In 1996, the text was expanded and converted to HTML format for installation on the WCSU Libraries Homepage
under the title Hypertext Library Lingo: a Glossary of Library Terminology. In 1997, many more hypertext links were
added and the format was improved in response to suggestions from users. During the summer of 1999, several
hundred terms and definitions were added, and a generic version was created, omitting all reference to specific
conditions and practices at the Ruth Haas Library.

In the fall of 1999, the glossary was expanded to 1,800 terms, renamed to reflect its expanded scope, and copyrighted.
In February, 2000, ODLIS was indexed in Yahoo! under "Reference - Dictionaries - Subject." It was also indexed in the
WorldCat database, available via OCLC FirstSearch. In 2000, the dictionary was expanded to 2,600 terms and by 2002
an additional 800 terms had been added. From 2002 to 2004, the dictionary was expanded to 4,200 terms and
cross-references were added, in preparation for the print edition. Since 2004, an additional 1,500 terms and definitions
have been added.

Purpose of the Dictionary

ODLIS is designed as a hypertext reference resource for library and information science professionals, university
students and faculty, and users of all types of libraries. The primary criterion for inclusion is whether a librarian or other
information professional might reasonably be expected to know the meaning of the term in the context of his/her work.
A newly coined term is added when, in the author's judgment, it is likely to become a permanent addition to the lexicon
of LIS. The dictionary reflects North American practice. However, because ODLIS was first developed as an online
resource available worldwide, with an e-mail contact address for feedback, users from many countries have contributed
to its growth, often suggesting additional terms and commenting on existing definitions. Expansion of the dictionary is
an ongoing process.

Broad in scope, ODLIS includes not only the terminology of the various specializations within LIS but also the vocabulary
of publishing, printing, binding, the book trade, graphic arts, book history, literature, bibliography, telecommunications,
and computer science when, in the author's judgment, a definition might prove useful to librarians and information
specialists in their work. Entries are descriptive, with examples provided when appropriate. The definitions of terms used
in the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules follow AACR2 closely and are therefore intended to be prescriptive.

The dictionary includes some slang terms and idioms and a few obsolete terms, often as See references to the term in
current use. When the meaning of a term varies depends on the field in which it is used, priority is given to the definition
that applies within the field with which it is most closely associated. Definitions unrelated to LIS are generally omitted.
As a rule, definition is given under an acronym only when it is generally used in preference to the full term.
Alphabetization is letter-by-letter. The authority for spelling and hyphenation is

Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language

RAILFAN GUIDES OF THE U.S.: SEPTA'S SUBWAY SURFACE LINES IN PHILADELPHIA, PA

David Dillard

Philadelphia is served by two major transit companies:
SEPTA, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority
PATCO, the Port Authority Transit Corporation

PATCO services New Jersey from Camden down to Lindenwold, but includes four stops in Philadelphia in order to provide their riders with access to Philadelphia.  It is a Heavy Rail line, and runs over the outside of the Ben Franklin bridge to hop over the Delaware River.

SEPTA, which covers Philadelphia PA and the surrounding suburbs, has one of the more diverse transit systems around, with Light Rail, Heavy Rail,
trolleybuses, busses, and several different styles of streetcars.  They stopped using some of their trolley bus line several years ago.  :-(  Streetcars come
in three varieties, updated PCC cars, and Kawasaki's with both poles (on most of the routes) and pantograph's (on routes 101 and 102).
The Norristown Light Rail line is fairly unique in the sense that it uses third rail for power, which is usually reserved for heavy rail systems.

SEPTA has two large transit centers: 30th Street which handles mainly Commuter Trains and the Market St Subway Line (Amtrak is also co-located
in the main station), and the 69th Street Terminal, which handles light rail, heavy rail, the route 101 and 102 Kawasaki Streetcars, and of course,
busses - in three different staging areas.  In addition, there are the Norristown (R6 Commuter, Light Rail, and busses) and Frankford Transportation
(just busses) Centers.

The SEPTA system is extensive..... SEPTA's selection of maps is at: http://www.septa.org/maps.html.

A nice personal SEPTA website with a really good selection of maps is: http://www.phillytrolley.org

Although SEPTA has a fairly liberal photo policy, the SEPTA police will stop you and take your name and address info down if they even see
you running around with a camera on their property - it happened to me in the 69th Street terminal after photographing the Kawasaki's out
on the street.  At least they don't detain you for hours on end like METRA does!

As always, if you have something to contribute, please check my contact page.

If you have a particular question about transit or railfanning in the Philly area, there are several Yahoo groups for that purpose,
please check 'em out first cause there are many area experts on those groups (and I'm not one of them :-).
