white screen

My SAA-2N has a white screen now, after working fine for almost a year.

I re-flashed the firmware.  NanovnaQT found the device and programmed it.

No change.  I hope the binary file was correct.

Any suggestion would be helpful.  Is it possible the screen connector became undone?

I suppose I could run some scans via the PC program to see it it is just a screen problem...

I just ran NanoSaver and the unit is working fine via the usb port...just a total white screen.

I took the unit apart, reseated both the ribbon cable to the display and the board-to-board

header, and display is now working again.

This is an example of a connection problem that I began seeing about 25 years ago. I think ultraminiaturization is to blame. As connector pins get smaller, they don't have enough metal-to-metal contact to maintain reliability in the face of vibration due to handing. I see it in tiny switches, too.

When I encounter something that's OOC, working its switches and connectors is one of the first things I try.

Glen,
Very interesting. I was waiting to see if I should crack it open or try a firmware update. I guess I will take it apart. Does the display flat cable receptacle have a retaining lock? The board-to-board cable also? What do I need to remove it?

I saw somewhere that somebody had similar problem on NanoVNA and the cause was badly soldered ribbon cable between the controll board and the display. I think that pressing on the display could make it loose.

Check my message with respect to the internal connector of the display..

Phil,

Yes it is a door hinge type clamp.  Most have a push in to lock system, but this is a lift

up clamp.  Gently!

In reality, I think it was more likely the 0.1" spaced pin and socket connector between the

two boards.

My brass standoffs were not exactly tight either, so all the hardware got a snugging up!

Glen,
Thanks for the info. I cracked it open and pulled the boards apart after disconnecting the battery. I noticed a lot of crusty white schmutz around the RF board back side of the 14 pin board-to-board through-hole female connector. I carefully scraped and brushed it off after trying isopropyl with no effect. Then I touched up the solder around the pins and a couple of the SMT parts near it. The SMT 14 pin male on the display board (actually the whole board) looked clean and shiny so I didn't touch it except to remove the flat cable from it's connector. It looked clean and shiny too. I reassembled it and it works!! Little victories like this don't happen much any more. The white stuff looked like corrosion and was probably conductive. Maybe from the salt spray on the trip over the Pacific.

Yes, the flex (Kapton PCB) cable between the display and its PCB has a flip-up ZIF connector. Just tilt it up with a plastic tool, push the cable in slightly while swinging the connector closed.

Same problem after 18 months - same solution: reseating the LCD ribbon cable connection. Glad I found your post.
