Anti-BSL Rally Feb. 23- Toronto, ON

Ally at DogZworth.com <love2fetch@...>

For anyone in the Toronto area there is an anti-BSL rally on Feb 23.  If you are interested in attending more information can be found on this link or you can read this email from the CKC. http://supporthersheysbill.com/

CKC Calls on Members to Attend Anti-BSL Rally

February 23rd in Support of Bill 16

As part of its mandate to oppose Breed Specific Legislation (BSL), the Canadian Kennel Club urges all members to show their support for Bill 16 by attending the Anti-BSL Rally on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. at Queen's Park in Toronto. We also encourage you to attend the legislative session of the second reading of Bill 16, which is the second bill scheduled for debate in the early afternoon that day.

Bill 16, the Public Safety Related to Dogs Statute Law Amendment Act, 2011, was introduced by MPP Randy Hillier (PC), Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington, on November 30, 2011 -- backed by MPP Cheri DiNovo (NDP) Parkdale-High Park and MPP Kim Craitor (LIB) Niagara Falls -- and serves to revoke the breed-specific section of the Dog Owner's Liability Act (DOLA) in Ontario, enacted August 29, 2005.

Specifically, Bill 16 "repeals provisions in the Animals for Research Act relating to the disposition of pit bulls under that Act" and also "repeals provisions in the Dog Owners' Liability Act that prohibit restricted pit bulls and provide for controls on pit bulls."

Contact Your Local MPP and Ask Them to Support Bill 16!

CKC strongly encourages all members to contact their MPP to ask for a vote of "Yes" as Bill 16 approaches its second reading. View all Ontario MPPs here and click on the name to view the Queen's Park and constituency contact information. Take action now and make your voice heard!

Sign and Submit a Petition Supporting Bill 16!

Please consider showing your support of Bill 16 by downloading MPP Randy Hillier's petition to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Be sure to include your name and address along with your written signature and mail or hand-deliver, as required by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, to the Perth Constituency Office of Randy Hillier prior to February 23rd.

The CKC Supports Bill 16 by Motion of the Board at the January 2012 Meeting.

As you know, the CKC "supports dangerous and/or vicious dog legislation, which would serve to protect the public from dangerous dogs" and does not support breed-specific legislation. CKC maintains that "a dangerous temperament is a product of many factors" and cannot be determined by breed alone. For more information, please check out the CKC Legislative Policy Statements regarding Breed Specific Legislation and Responsible Dog Ownership.

For more information about the Anti-BSL Rally in Support of Bill 16, please visit The Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of Canada website.

AKC recognition of NAFA titles

Dana Nichols <workinglabs@...>

The North American Flyball Association is pleased to announce that the American Kennel Club will now recognize NAFA flyball titles for inclusion on pedigrees of AKC registered dogs.  AKC will recognize three titles – Flyball Champion (FDCh), Flyball Master (FM), and ONYX.  Titles earned back to January 1, 2000 may be recorded.  Owners who wish to have their dogs’ titles recorded must fill out an application and pay a recording fee to the AKC of $20.  Applications may be submitted immediately and the AKC Performance Events Department will be prepared to start processing application on July 1, 2012.

More information is available on the NAFA web page (www.flyball.org), including the application form.

Re: AKC recognition of NAFA titles

Dana Nichols <workinglabs@...>

We have had a number of questions about the AKC recognition of NAFA titles, primarily about submitting a title certificate for recognition of ONYX awards.  For ONYX titles,  NAFA awards a plaque and pin, but does not issue a separate title certificate.  You may submit a photocopy of the ONYX plaque.

There have also been a number of questions about whether other titles will be recognized.  At this point, the only titles that will be recognized are FDCH, FM and ONYX, but we may investigate the possibility of having higher titles recognized in the future.

Thank you for you patience as we go through this process.

supervising judge application - comment period

Dana Nichols <workinglabs@...>

Comment period for Supervising Judge application from Geoff Brown of Raleigh, NC

  • Effective October 1, 2009, the Board adopted new rules on considering applications for supervising judges. The rules were adopted to give the Judges Committee and Board of Directors the opportunity to make a more informed decision on supervising judge applications. The new rules call for notice of the application to be posted on the NAFA® webpage for a period, ideally of seven days, to allow for comment to the Board. Applicants are also required to meet with the Judges Committee via teleconference to discuss his or her application.

  • Prospective judges must possess all of the best qualities one could want in a Supervising Judge . . . fairness, firmness, safety minded, a good attitude to the sport, the participants, the spectators, a sense of responsibility to the sport and as a representative of NAFA®. Prospective judges must be willing and able to mentor new and apprentice judges, answering questions, challenging apprentices, and generally overseeing the education of the new judge. The sharing of experiences and the ability to explain rulings and other nuances of the sport are an absolute must. Prospective judges must have excellent measuring skills since his or her measurement is the deciding factor for any height cards. It is understood that the meeting of all of the necessary criteria for Supervisory status does not mean an automatic approval by the Board of Directors. It is not the intention of the Board to appoint great numbers of Supervisory Judges in any area.

  • The NAFA® Judges Committee has received an application for supervisory judging status from Geoff Brown, of Raleigh, NC. Comments on this applicant should be directed to the Judges Committee at judges@.... Comments received will be reviewed by the Judges Committee and the Board of Directors. Names will remain private unless permission is granted for them to be disseminated to the applicant. The Committee will make a recommendation to the Board of Directors for consideration at the August BOD meeting.
