Kathy's nomination letter:

I would like to nominate Kathy Haney for the Board of Directors of NAFA. She would be an excellent candidate. She has been playing flyball for 16 years. She has successfully run her own team for 10 years. Surf City's tournaments are one of the best run tournament on the west coast. She's organized, compassionate and a great leader. All these skills would help her be a great board member. The west coast needs some representation and we would be proud to have Kathy Haney represent us.

News from the AGM January 27, 2018

Kim Davis

NAFA Board of Directors Annual General Meeting, January 27th, 2018

Minneapolis, MN

Election results - This year our delegate voter turnout was remarkable. We were thrilled to see that we 90% voter turnout for our ballots this year!

Announcement of New Officers:
Chairman of the Board: Steve Corona
Vice Chairman: John Hendriks
Secretary: Kim Davis
Treasurer: Dana Hanson

Delegate Vote Results and Changes

This past year has been a busy year with changes and trial periods. For much of this past year we have implemented a trial period for changes to the jump height requirements and false starts in the open class. During that time we solicited feedback and received a lot of responses on these topics, as well as for the removal of false starts in the regular and multibreed class. Following that feedback period we held a delegate vote on these issues.

From the feedback and voting results, we would like to announce the following changes:
o The Open trial period changes of no false starts, and ability to run any jump height between the minimum and maximum, will continue through the end of this flyball year. Additionally any host clubs that would like to offer a practice start before the first heat in a race will be allowed to do so without the need for ED approval.
o Effective October 1st, 2018, these changes will be officially in the rulebook, and the practice start will offered to all competitors.
o Effective October 1st, 2018, there will no longer be false starts in the regular and multibreed classes of racing. The ability for competitors to have a practice start before the first heat in a race will also be offered.

NAFA is creating a new special committee, whose primary responsibility will focus on communications. We are looking to improve the ways we communicate with our members, as well as finding better ways to improve the pace at which we communicate updates.

FCI World Cup
This past August, NAFA was approached by the FCI, which is a world governing body of many dog sports, about attending the inaugural World Cup of Flyball this coming August, which will be held in France. NAFA did a lot of analysis on logistics and costs. Due to the short timeline and planning, both financially and logistically, NAFA isn’t going to fund teams to enter this year, but plans to work towards attendance at the 2020 World Cup. We plan to create and publish selection criteria for teams by the end of this fiscal year. While there is a chance one of top finisher in the NAFA Championship standings may attend the event if they can raise their own funds, NAFA will send a delegate to the event to better understand the logisitics, as we well as work with the FCI to help us prepare for 2020.

A huge thank you to one of our board members that is rolling off after his two terms have ended.

Dale Smith has been an instrumental member of the flyball community and a major contributor to the NAFA Board of Directors. While this is the end of 6 consecutive years on the board, Dale has in fact served a total of 21 for the board. His contributions to the sport extend well beyond his contributions directly to the board. Dale was instrumental in the development of our current EJS, and is currently working hard at helping develop the next generation of lights. Dale’s contribution to the technology side of flyball on the whole is amazing. He created the NAFA Flyball Database that drives all our points, titles, and regional standings. Additionally, he created the flyball optimizer that NAFA uses to generate schedules for tournaments. If that all wasn’t enough, Dale has worked tirelessly to help create and maintain our rulebook, been a critical contributor to CanAm, and that’s all when he isn’t busy functioning as a NAFA Supervising Judge. He is one of our longest tenured active judge in flyball. So please join me in offering a huge “Thank You” to Dale Smith!

Congrats to NAFA’s newest board members!

NAFA Communications Committee

Kim Davis

NAFA is pleased to share additional details regarding the formation of a new committee focusing on improving communications within the NAFA flyball community. The committee will look at not only the content of the messages, but also the various channels of communication (i.e., website, email, social media) with the goal of optimizing the message and reaching as many in the flyball community as possible.

The NAFA Communications Committee will focus on three main work streams:

1.       Official communication from the NAFA Board of Directors to the Flyball Community: This area will focus on official information regarding the NAFA Policies and Rules of Racing as well as any clarification or communication that the Board of Directors needs to provide to the flyball community.

2.       NAFA CanAm Classic Tournament: With the 10th anniversary of CanAm happening this year, we want to ensure that all information regarding this tournament is communicated to everyone in a clear and timely fashion, encouraging everyone to attend this special event.

3.       Flyball Community Engagement: This area will focus on information sharing between the participants in flyball (e.g., regional happenings, training tips, equipment advice, general Q&A, etc.).

The members of the committee are: (non-board members are identified with an asterisk *)

·         Cindy Henderson * - Committee Chair (Region 13)

·         Neil Flood (Region 3)

·         Steve Corona (Region 5)

·         Kim Davis (Region 5)

·         Emma Mak (Region 2)

·         Aaron Robbins (Region 2)

·         Dede Crough * (Region 15)

·         Kathy Haney * (Region 6/16)

·         Jayne McQuillen * (Region 21)

The committee looks forward to working with the NAFA Board of Directors and engaging the entire flyball community in a way that brings us all together for the enjoyment of flyball. If there are any suggestions for ways to improve communication, please send them to the committee chair Cindy Henderson at cindyhenderson23@... .

Upcoming move to Groups.io – a new list provider

Kim Davis

Dear NAFANews Subscribers,

We’re moving!

NAFA will be moving this list to Groups.io, a newer email list provider competing with Yahoo Groups, within the next week or two.

Why are we moving?

Yahoo stopped offering any customer service support for Yahoo Groups some time ago, and the new owners (Verizon/Oath) haven't made any public statement about the future of Yahoo Groups.

What do you need to do?

You won't have to do anything to continue receiving emails from NAFANews.

All of our content including the list of subscribers (members) will be copied to the new provider.

Warning:  your spam filter may block those notices or other emails from the new group! If you notice you’re not receiving messages, please check your spam folder.  To avoid this - add the new group email address (NAFANews@groups.io) to your address book, or add groups.io to your spam white list.

Do I need to create a login?

If you’re only interested in continuing to receive messages from NAFANews, then no.  To access the archive (to see old messages) you will need to log in to the site, but that is far easier than it ever was with Yahoo Groups.  Instructions will be included in the welcome messages you’ll receive.

The new site is here if you want to take a look, but none of our content has been copied there yet https://groups.io/g/NAFANews

When the transfer is complete you will receive two emails. One from Groups.io telling you that "You have been added" to our new group, and a Welcome message from NAFA. Look for those messages in your Inbox and/or your Spam folder.

If you have any questions, or want to make any suggestions, please contact flyball@....

Thank you,

North American Flyball Association

Welcome to subscribers transferred from NAFANews Yahoo Group

Emma Mak

Migration from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io has been completed.  All NAFANews Yahoo Group subscribers now belong to this new list.

The following instructions are for those transferred subscribers:

If you simply wish to receive messages from this group by email then you're all set - no further action on your part is needed.

  • If you click onto the Groups.io web site and you want to access members-only areas of our https://groups.io/g/NAFANews (to see old messages, for example) you will need to log in using your email address (the same address used in the group). There are multiple ways to log in at Groups.io, but the easy way to start is to click the link to Log In, and since you don't have a password yet, click the "Email me a link to log in" button.
  • The link in the email Groups.io sends you will log you in for 30 days. Any time you want you can request another log in email, so no worries if you log out, clear your browser cookies or let the 30 days expire. There's no need to ever set a password, unless you prefer to log in that way.

If you need any help with Groups.io, please visit https://groups.io/static/help#faq or contact NAFA directly at flyball@....

If you do not wish to belong to this group and email list, you may unsubscribe by sending an email to NAFANews+unsubscribe@groups.io

Regards,
NAFA
