EJS start cadence change

Dana <danamilstead@...>

Lee Heighton asked me to send out a note to everyone about how to identify which EJS have had a change to the start light cadence. The Signature Gear lights are in the process of having the start cadence changed from 1.2 to 1.0. Lights that have been changed should be marked in permanent marker underneath the score table console. If for some reason, you receive two sets of EJS which are not set to the same cadence, please contact NAFA® right away so we can have it remedied.

supervising judge application - Scott Frerichs

Dana <danamilstead@...>

Scott Frerichs, of Balton, Illinois, has applied for advancement to supervising judge. The public comment period is now open.

Comment period for Supervising Judge application from Scott Frerichs, Balton, Illinois

Effective October 1, 2009, the Board adopted new rules on considering applications for supervising judges. The rules were adopted to give the Judges Committee and Board of Directors the opportunity to make a more informed decision on supervising judge applications. The new rules call for notice of the application to be posted on the NAFA® webpage for a period, ideally of seven days, to allow for comment to the Board. Applicants are also required to meet with the Judges Committee via teleconference to discuss his or her application.

Prospective judges must possess all of the best qualities one could want in a Supervising Judge . . . fairness, firmness, safety minded, a good attitude to the sport, the participants, the spectators, a sense of responsibility to the sport and as a representative of NAFA®. Prospective judges must be willing and able to mentor new and apprentice judges, answering questions, challenging apprentices, and generally overseeing the education of the new judge. The sharing of experiences and the ability to explain rulings and other nuances of the sport are an absolute must. Prospective judges must have excellent measuring skills since his or her measurement is the deciding factor for any height cards. It is understood that the meeting of all of the necessary criteria for Supervisory status does not mean an automatic approval by the Board of Directors. It is not the intention of the Board to appoint great numbers of Supervisory Judges in any area.

The NAFA® Judges Committee has received an application for supervisory judging status from Scott Frerichs of Balton, Illinois. Comments on this applicant should be directed to the Judges Committee at judges@.... Comments received will be reviewed by the Judges Committee and the Board of Directors. Names will remain private unless permission is granted for them to be disseminated to the applicant. The Committee will make a recommendation to the Board of Directors for consideration at the May 8, 2010 meeting.

New EJS cadence

Lee Heighton

Hello everyone,

There have been several questions recently about the new start cadence for the Signature EJS from 1.2 to 1.0 seconds. The idea originated after we were contacted by tournament hosts and competitors stating that the limited runback of some of the venues available to them (50-60 ft) made it very difficult to use the second light for their start dogs. The decision was made to reduce the sequence to 1.0 seconds in order to address these concerns.

Just today I was contacted by the RD from Region 9 stating that the new start sequence would make it much easier for the start handlers at their tournament due to the limited amount of runback.

In conversations with many competitors it appears that the new start cadence in no way limits the performance of our start dogs but there is an adjustment process necessary to adapt to the new sequence.

It is for the above reasons that the Board of Directors implemented this change. We hope to have all of the EJS converted as soon as possible. If you are at a tournament and discover that the start sequence is still at 1.2 seconds, please contact me at 810-650-2093 and I will explain how to update the set you are using to the current standards.

Subject: CanAm 2009 P&L

Dana,

Please post the following message to the NAFA News site:

Upon review of the CanAm 2009 income and expenses on the P&L reports for fiscal year 2008/2009 and for the first fiscal quarter 2009/2010,  I certify that the numbers are correct.   Upon review, the cost of prizes were inadvertently left off of a manually prepared report that I provided to the ED for his presentation at the January BOD meeting and AGM.   This mistake resulted in an understatement of the CanAM 2009 losses.

As noted, we are actively seeking sponsors to help offset expenses for future CanAm events.   NAFA has created a sponsorship DVD to help with this effort.  Suggestions for potential sponsors are gladly accepted.  Please contact me with the company's name, address and contact person and we will promptly make contact.   Or, if you just have an idea of a company that you think would be a good sponsor let me know and I will take care of finding the address, etc.

handicapped participants

Lee Heighton

Hello everyone,

Recently a thread from a Regional flyball list was forwarded to me for clarification. The thread discusses NAFA's stance on participation by individuals who use wheelchairs or scooters. In the portion of the thread that I received there was an incorrect quote from the minutes when the BoD addressed this question.

The BoD meeting in question occurred in Omaha, Nebraska in 2007. A competitor from Florida had written in with concerns about wheelchairs and scooters being allowed in the racing ring as well as the line and box judging areas. The quotation stated on the Regional flyball list actually came from this letter and in no way represents the opinion of the Board of Directors.

NAFA strongly supports participation in our sport by all competitors regardless of any special needs that they may have. Specifically, wheelchairs, scooters or any other items that a participant may need to allow them to participate in our sport are allowed in the racing area as well as the line and box judging positions.

I hope that this answers any potential misunderstandings and will be happy to answer any questions concerning this matter if anyone would like to contact me directly.

Thank you,

Lee Heighton
