File Backup
I just read Scott's email about potential file loss and the backup function within ACLog. I thought I would mention the solution I use on all computers here at my house. Scott is right in that there are many perils to data that exist and the biggest one is that it isn't IF a hard drive will fail it is WHEN will it fail. Some last for many years and some don't but the truth is that all hard drives will fail at some point and that includes SSDs as they have a finite number of read/write cycles until they too are prone to failure. I've been using Acronis True Image to backup my important drives for many years. I make an image of my drives which makes recovery hast and pretty painless. There are also other programs that will backup drives on a scheduled basis. There's even a backup option within Windows itself (not a particularly full featured one but it's there). There are cloud options but I like having a local solution as it makes recovery a lot faster. Both together would make losing data close to impossible! When the first drive I've had fail I was lucky in that I didn't loose a lot of irreplaceable stuff. But it still was a pain. As the years have gone by I've accumulated many gigs of photos and music files. Since we live in a digital world where you don't have negatives sitting in a drawer when you lose data it's gone forever. So think about backing up your computer regularly as you certainly don't want to lose the records of all your QSOs nor anything else you really treasure.

Bain,
After the import, select all of the K1USN QSO records from the Recent Contacts main list, Click Edit from the top menu bar, click Fill Fields Determined by Call, click Selected Records. That will populate missing fields such as state. You have to have a CallBook lookup source like QRZ, free AC Log Calldata, etc. for this to work. 73, Mitch NWØM

Hi Wilbur,
Thanks for your e-mail. That depends on the number of QSOs and amount of data recorded. You can navigate to your log file in Windows Explorer to see the file size.
Enjoy! 73, Scott

Re: Problem importing files to ACLog from N1MM+
Hi Bain,
Check your .adi file to see if that information is present. I suspect
the issue is with the export, not the import. ACLog can only input what is
in the .adi file.

Subject: [N3FJPSoftwareUsers] Problem importing files to ACLog from
N1MM+ I regularly use N3FJP logger programs, but have just started using N1MM+ for the K1USN Slow Speed Test with the User Defined Contest module downloaded from the K1USN website. It worked well and I exported a Cabrillo file showing all the information. When I exported the same log in .adi format, then imported it into ACLog (the N3FJP program I use as a master logger), the QSOs showed up in ACLog missing an important data field: the state/province/country (SPC) abbreviation. I had to edit each QSO record to fill in the SPC data.
Is there any way to avoid this problem the next time I export/import files into ACLog? Manual editing of each QSO record is a bother!
I would appreciate any suggestions.

Interestingly, Ham Radio Deluxe recently posted a note about 64-bit Microsoft Office Updates interfering with the HRD LogBook database.
No idea if there is a relationship here or not. Ron, AC2C

Hi Woody,
In addition to the users having data erased, I understand that the latest Windows update is also overwriting current Windows drivers with older versions, so that may have occurred in your case. 73, Scott

Please Regularly Backup Your Data!
Scott Davis
Hi All,
It's only been a handful of reports, but I've received a couple e-mail that the latest Windows 10 update is in some cases erasing user files. Settings files were returned to default and even backup files on the hard drive were erased.
Setting up a sensible, automated backup plan can be as easy as leaving a thumb drive plugged into your PC. Then, in Amateur Contact Log click File > Backup Options and on the Backup on Close option, point to that device for your daily backup. As long as you choose a device independent of your hard drive (the device holding your primary log file) to store your backup file, your data will be much safer.
Taking that minute now will save you from much disappointment later on. It's easy, seamless, automatic and once set up, you don't even have to think about it.
The following is from the FAQ page here:
http://www.n3fjp.com/faq.html#q49
![]() Actually, this question is almost never asked, and then only after data loss has occurred, but is it something for all of us to prepare for. Hard drives fail, RF / power surges get in the shack and corrupt files, Windows updates go awry, viruses invade, PC cleaners "clean" too much (I've had multiple reports of "Cleaners" eating log files over the years), components of our operating systems fail and human errors happen. Over the long haul, without protection, data loss is an inevitability.
Both Amateur Contact Log and the contest software have built in backup features to help protect your data. The best way to protect yourself from data loss is by backing up your data often, ideally to an external medium. All my logging programs have several automatic backup options that you can configure by clicking File > Backup Options.
AC Log creates a backup of your data automatically, once a week by default and also includes an option to save a backup every time you close it to a location of your choice. To fully protect yourself from data loss, I strongly recommend you enable the backup on close option and choose an external medium such as another location on your home network, thumb drive, etc. With this automatic backup feature enabled to an external medium, even if the PC hosting your log file totally fails, you can be sure that the worst case scenario is only losing a day's worth of data, not a lifetime of logging.
Please take a minute now and plan a sensible backup process for your data!
You've worked hard, maybe a lifetime, to put all those Qs in your log. Please take a minute now and protect them!
Enjoy!

I made up a command using <RST> even though that is not part of the Sweepstakes exchange. The default "5NN" was inserted. Then I intentionally entered WD5CMA as the callsign so that, with<SERIAL> = 68 and <RST> appended, it would overflow the 24 character command buffer in the K2. RI:KY <CALL> <SERIAL> N5IB 63 LA <RST>; totals 24 CW characters counting the spaces, so the terminating semicolon is truncated We can call the K2's behavior an "Elecraft feature" ... without receiving a valid terminator the command is ignored. The rig doesn't transmit a partial, it does nothing, which is a good thing. I'd say it's ready for Prime Time Jim, N5IB

Re: Edit Fields Displayed, Position and Tab Order

Tom,
On the Shortcut, the administrator will be grayed out. You need to go into the file location of ACLog and make that have the correct rights for your login. Go here: C:\Users\”your computer name”\Documents\Affirmatech\N3FJP Software Right click on the ACLog folder > give access to> and click on Specific People. Your login should show there with a permission level. You need to have that level show either Owner or Read/Write. If it shows anything else, then change it to read\write. After that click on the Share button. This should take care of the problem.

Re: CW transmit of rig's stored message memories

Hi Scott,
Works like a champ! Just tried it out with the K2. Set it up as: F2 -> RI:KY <CALL> <SERIAL> N5IB 63 LA; Running with the rig interface over my Bluetooth adapter. It inserted the callsign and grabbed the next serial number just as intended. In fact I let the program fetch my results from last year as a starting point Would you believe the next available serial was 67 ?? Actually not as bad as it seems - I'd set out to run QRP and resolved to work only one station per section in quest of a sweep. Managed 66 QSOs in 66 sections. I'll go exercise it some more later this evening, and make up some commands that use <RST> as well. Only thing I notice is that in the cheat sheet window all that showed was "RI: KY" It would be a memory aid if however many characters of the command string that would fit could be displayed. I'm getting psyched for Sweepstakes already! Many ,many thanks, Jim, N5IB
