Re: If I Created a POTA Log?

Jim Shorney

Thanks for considering this, Scott!

What needs to be in the log is pretty much the same between the two programs.

Mandatory fields are Date, Time, Band, Mode, and Callsign worked.

Not mandatory at this time but strongly encouraged:

OPERATOR callsign
STATION_CALLSIGN (if different than OPERATOR)
MY_SIG_INFO reference number of the entity activated
SIG_INFO reference number of a entity worked for park-to-park contacts

Nice to have for various reasons:

MY_STATE, MY_CNTY, and MY_GRIDSQUARE (allows direct upload with correct station location to LoTW)
SIG and MY_SIG (program name, i.e. POTA, WWFF, SOTA, etc., helpful for operator data crunching)
FREQ (many ops like to log frequency)
Other fields like name, state/province, and country of the station worked as well as Comments.

There may be other fields that some ops would like to have. I'm not familiar with the requirements of the various programs but there may be enough crossover with SOTA, Lighthouses, and other programs that would make a generic special interest group/special event logger practical. It might be helpful to have a look at Genlog to see how it handles all of this.

IMO I think what bothers some ops is the arcane names of some of the fields, particularly the SIG (special interest group) fields. The differentiation between OPERATOR and STATION_CALLSIGN is another bit of slightly advanced knowledge. Although either or both may be used (or not) for generic operations it should be clear what special situations they are desirable for.

Of course CAT control and integration with ACL probably goes without saying. :)

I would love to see some of the special interest activators weigh in on this, Speak up guys!

In short, if you can nail down and agree on something clear and

I am looking forward to seeing what emerges from the consensus of your

Bill,
I have been Beta testing his software for some time. Rig control works great. He just added a new feature that will also change the band setting in the N3FJP Loggers. There is an interface screen that allows you to select which comm port will Key the Rig and/or key FSK if you have it. I use the DE Engine for all my RTTY operations and contest. Email me at joannplano2005@... and I will walk you thru how to set it up.

Re: Bearing, Distant and Cont.

Scott Davis

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for your follow up.  It does  You missed this portion of the FAQ here:

The bearing and distance works best for DX. With versions 1.8 and later, I have included the latitude and longitude of the state capitals so, when you enter the state, the calculations should reflect the bearing and distance from your QTH to the state capital. Additionally, Jim's country files now include the Lat & Long for some US call areas. Click View > Country List to see which ones.

Also, some of the callbook lookup options return Lat and Long and AC Log will use these values to calculate bearing and distance. In addition, if you are recording the grid square, the bearing and distance will update based on the value you enter in the grid square field.

So, in short, as long as you are accurately providing both your Lat / Long as well as the station you are working's Lat / Long, the values should update accordingly, but if the data source for call book lookup isn't returning that data (not all services have the data for all contacts), there is no way for AC Log to perform the calculation.

---

Here is an example of the calculation where QRZ data is used, which accurately shows a local ham, just 5 miles away from me:

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your e-mail.  The two things I can think to suggest are:

-  Click Settings > Appearance > Form Size and start with a smaller percentage.  You can still drag the edges of the form to your desired size, but your fonts will be smaller from the get go.

-  You might also check your monitor settings to make sure your font display is at 100% and not a larger value.

Enjoy!

An ADIF import of the raw (that is not altered at all) ADIF file exported from N1MM+ populates the ACLog "Contest-ID" field.  Is that not sufficient for some reason?  I have thousands of ACLog entries from N1MM+ and they have always populated the Contest-ID field for me.

For state QSO parties where county is part of the exchange, I process the N1MM+ ADIF file through the AD1C "ADIF County Conversion" tool to transform the contest logged county format to a valid ADIF "CNTY" field.  Then I import that into ACLog.
