Re: "Unable to retrieve data" pop-ups

Scott Davis

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your e-mail.

This FAQ was written with Field Day networking in mind, since insufficient permissions causes the error to appear most often under those circumstances, but the following applies to stand alone installations too.

The causes of errors accessing your database are listed from most common to least common as follows:

- By far, the most common cause of that error is that your security permissions are not allowing the program to access the log data file. This can occur as a result of insufficient network permissions, or the file / folder permission settings on your local drive. I have received reports of Window Updates causing your permissions to be changed in some cases.

First, make sure that you save the LogData.MDB file to a drive and directory that is accessible to ALL PCs on the network, or if using a local drive, that the file and folder permissions are set to update, not just read. I do not recommend using your Program Files directory, as Windows is especially particular about allowing access there. Instead, use something like c:\FieldDay. The drive, folder and file ALL must have their permissions set to Update, not just Read and must be accessible to all the PCs on your network. In this example, your drive c, your folder FieldDay and your file LogData.mdb must all have permissions set to Update. The drive and folder must also be Shared. More details and the example network security sharing settings I use are here:

http://www.n3fjp.com/FDInfoTips.html#networkingtips

- Your network is having drops in connectivity. I have lots more information on remedying that here: http://www.n3fjp.com/help/networkinghelp.html.

- Your virus protection software is blocking the connection. I've had user reports from folks attempting to run two different virus protection software programs simultaneously, which were in conflict with each other, preventing the connection. Disabling one of the virus programs corrected the problem. In another case, Kaspersky issued an update that affected all programs using Microsoft Access databases, including mine. Kaspersky users had to wait for Kaspesky to issue a corrected update to remedy that situation.

- There have been a few other, very rare reports, which I've been documenting half way down this page here:

Sorry, I don’t understand where Sign and Upload is.  If I look under the TQSL tab I find “sign the log and upload it automatically to LOTW,“ and under call sign certificate I have W5MJ, NN5P and FO/W5MJ, and I choose one of those when I use the TQSL upload feature. If you were talking about N3FJP logging, the file I have open is for W5MJ only, not the others. I do have the other two files under separate listings for my N3FJP logging program.

There are new country files for ACLog and related software by N3FJP.

To update the country files from the logging program menu, select:

You should download all three files.  When done, you can re-start your logging program.

Re: Install on USB/External Drive? #setup

Scott Davis

Hello!

Thanks for your e-mail.

Our software creates the support files folder based on your default Windows OS %USERPROFILE% environment variable. The support files are very small and will not grow as your log does. The support files folder location isn't user customizable, but you can set AC Log or the contest software to look for your log file wherever you like.

Just open your log file and then click File > Save As. Then save your log file to your preferred location. AC Log will remember that location and continue to use it automatically, each time you start the software.

That said, you can change your default Windows settings, where your support files land, as detailed here:

https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-tip-move-your-default-data-folders-to-a-different-drive/

Just be sure to copy or move your data when you do, or you will be presented with a new log file and unregistered program next time your start AC Log. If that occurs, copy the files from your old location to your new one with File Manager. Then start AC Log and click File > Open, navigate to your log file and select it.

Be well and enjoy!

Hi Jim,

I think there was a change to TQSL a while ago that requires a later version of ACLog.  The current version is 6.7, so you probably need to upgrade.

Hi Larry,
Thanks for your reply. Here’s what I’ve done and what I’m running:
1.  I’ve read the FAQ’s
2. TQSL 2.5.7
3. ACLog 6.1
4. Win10
5. Set up TQSL on new computer with a new TQSL certificate

When I clicked “all qso’s not uploaded” The message that comes back is “Already uploaded qso’s detected”.  In the body of the text it says the log contains 91 qso’s which appear to have already been signed for upload to LOTW, and no new qso’s.

This leads to to believe that the qso’s were uploaded, but I’m not seeing a “Y” in the sent column of ACLog .

When I hit the “confirmed since” button I get an error message “Error retrieving web data”.  The body of the message says that request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel.

That’s a lot of info, but I hope it gives you a clearer picture of where I’m at.  Any and all help is appreciated.
Thanks,

Re: Serial number problem

Scott Davis

Hi All,

Thanks for your e-mail. Fldigi sends the serial number, so it needs to ensure it has the correct value. There are two ways to accomplish this. The following is from:

http://www.n3fjp.com/help/api.html

To determine the next serial number to be sent:

<CMD><NEXTSERIALNUMBER></CMD> (only functions in programs where a serial number is required).

N3FJP Software responds:

<CMD><NEXTSERIALNUMBERRESPONSE><VALUE>123</VALUE></CMD>

You can also set the next serial number to be sent:

<CMD><SETSERIALNUMBER><VALUE>12</VALUE></CMD>

Fldigi needs to implement one of these two methods to ensure it send the proper serial number. Please be sure to pass this along to the Fldigi developers. You'll find their support group here:

https://groups.io/g/winfldigi/

I experienced the same problem.  I found that the difference lies in how each program deals with log entries.  N3FJP uses a form of error correction.  That is, if the log page isn't filled out correctly, such as a callsign error, etc., it will not log the contact.  Fldigi has no such protection.  It will log anything you entered into it.  This results in different total numbers of calls and subsequent differences in QSO numbers. when running both programs with API interface.

I use both options (if they are appropriate).  Both the “Rec Conf By” and the “Sent Conf By” fields will hold an “L’ and a “C”.  I have no desire to use EQSL so I can’t address that problem but I would assume those fields will hold an “E” as well.
