Band Status and Chat Function

Michael WA7SKG

Getting ready for FD, I finally got another computer to test networking with. I followed the various directions and both computers are using the database and contacts are showing up on the other computer appropriately. Dupe checking is working. The only thing that isn't working right now is the Band Status and Chat Function. On the primary computer hosting the database, it shows up in the Band Status Grid properly. The other computer does not show up in either grid. On the other computer, nothing shows at all in the grid. I have checked Enable Status/Chat Functions on both machines. The status on the primary computer says "Connected to computer". On the other machine, the status says "Attempting to connect to computer". I am using File Share, not TCP.

Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?

When master pc gets disconnected from others it should sync contacts from all the others on its own after reconnected. If it does not, keep in mind each pc keeps a copy of all of its contacts as well. I have in the past done an export of each pc contacts and then import those into the master log. I think I recall it handled any dupes without issues.

a little off topic...but FD is this weekend...and many use
n3fjp software and file sharing.

MS is pushing out a major update ..may 2019...level 1903
on my 3 pc's here at home...after the update ( a lengthy one ) i
had to update my "advanced file sharing" choices and then do a
"network reset" on each pc to enable file sharing.

one great feature of the update...
one can now "disable" downloading" of updates for
up to 35 days....this is great if you are away from "home"
and are using a cell or hotspot for internet connection.
no big update files to cause data rate overages.

if need more info....contact me off group

Re: Log in to a net, not a controller

Joseph Miller

Hello,

This is not an easy question to answer as each net has it's own rules. This won't cover every circumstance, but I will start with a few.

Local nets on 2 meters using a repeater: I don't log them as these contacts can not be used for ARRL awards. If you decide to log them, probably best to log the net control's call sign as that who the qso is with.

On HF, there are worked all states nets, and there I would log only the stations you called during the net. Since these nets generally involve QSL cards, you definitely want to record these.

Lastly, if it is a HF net just taking check-ins, then the net control's call sign should be recorded with the name of the net in the comments section.

I am sure there are other situations, but hopefully this will give some help.

You can use one of the free "MS Access/MDB file readers" to achieve your goal.  You will find many if you do a web search on the quote-delimited phrase.  You can also use the database function in OpenOffice/LibreOffice but it is a "bit" arcane.
Have fun!

Bill,

If device manager is showing the cable on COM 5, that is the port you should use in the rig setup. Just remember that you cannot share the port with anything else, including the RT Systems software.

Using ACLog with remote stations

Peter <k3sss@...>

Hello ACLog community

A significant part of my operation involves using remote stations around the country.

I would like to use the Awards functionality of ACLog to show my my progress toward various awards BY STATION.

This is in fact mandatory for WAS because the rules say that all contacts for a WAS award must be made by stations within 50 miles of each other.

I see 2 ways to do this:
- all of my log entries have the station name in the "Other" field.

- all of my log entries also have a "Grid sent" entry.

If I search by the contents of the "Other" field I can easily see only the log entries from that station. However, when viewing that subset of contacts, "Awards" still shows me all log entries in the database, not just the subset I've selected. Am I doing something wrong, or is that just how it works ?

I haven't found a way to search by "Grid sent" yet. Is there a way? and if so, would Awards then work the same way, ie showing me the results based on the entire database, not the subset of selected records ?

any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks Steve and to all the others who helped with their comments!! Changing the baud rate to 4800 was all that was needed. I guess I was so fixated on the K3S that communicates at 38400 it never occurred to me to try a differed speed. My Winkeyer USB, N3FJP's FD software and the FT-450D are happily communicating with one another.

Unless you changed it, the default baud rate is 4800.Your attachment shows 38400.

If the device manager shows the cable on COM5, and the RT Systems programming software connects on COM5, then I think you should use COM5 in N3FJP software too!

Remember, ONLY 1 application can connect to the com port at a time (without extra port sharing software and that opens a can of worms I don’t recommend).

One caution.  If you insert the RT-Systems cable in a different USB port, it will show up with a different number.  I'm assuming you installed the driver, plugged in the cable to your USB port, and left the cable in that port.

Well? Call it Gremlins.

After setting everything up, guess it took a little time for everything to sync but all is good. Both Home and Pro PC's I tested are now able to see each other on the networking screen and the shared file, of course, is logging both data, tested with the inputs. Software is working as it was designed to.

Crisis averted.

With W10, I created a folder in the root directory (on the W10 Pro machine) and called it Logs (C:\Logs) and then shared it. After that, I was able to make entries on separate computers, both registering the entries properly.

What I have yet to see is, communication showing status between the two machines. They do not see each other on the chart and I've followed instructions regarding making sure the names of the computers are input properly but still do not see a status of the two machines being networked.

I am running the latest FD software on 2 laptops running the latest version of Win10.

I have turned on networking via file sharing using one laptop as the “Master DB”.

The 2 machines see each other appropriately in the band/mode grid. Messages between the 2 laptops appear appropriately.

However, only local (on that pc) qso’s show up in the log window , not the qso’s of the other station.

Likewise, only the section which was in the log of the local station turns blue so the other station had no clue that the section has been worked.

Is this the expected result or have I mid i figured something ?
