FT8 for Field Day

Anita Kemmerer

We are testing FT8 with N1MM for Field Day.  It does not appear that QSOs with the mode FT8 are counting toward the score – they show up with zero points.  Does the Field Day contest file need to be updated to support FT8 or is there something we are doing wrong?

Thanks,

Anita, I suggest you check with the ARRL Contest Manager regarding the scoring of FT8 QSOS in FD.

Do your FT8 QSOs in the N1MM+ log include the received exchange in the correct columns in the log window? If not, they will be assigned zero points.

The standard FT8 QSO does not include the Field Day exchange. The only way to send the FD exchange to another station in FT8 is to put it in a free-text (13-character) message, most likely at the end of the QSO. It would not be at all surprising if received free-text messages were not passed on to N1MM+ at all. Even if they were passed on in a comment field, N1MM+ would not recognize them as contest exchanges - there is no standard format for comments that could be used to reliably extract exchange information.

I believe you will probably have to enter the received exchange into N1MM+ by hand after the contact is logged. Following that, in order to get the program to assign points to the contact and to record the dupe/non-dupe status correctly, you will have to do a Tools > Rescore Current Contest. You are going to have to rely on N1MM+'s worked/not worked (dupe/non-dupe) status to tell you whether you can safely work another station or not, because WSJT-X does not distinguish between bands when notifying you of "worked before" status.

It all seems very clumsy - you could probably complete two or three RTTY or PSK63 contacts in the time it takes to make an FT8 QSO, take note of the received exchange, edit the N1MM+ log to include the received exchange data in the correct places, and rescore the contest in order to update the worked/not worked status of that call sign in the N1MM+ log.

FT8 will probably work well enough in a VHF contest where the only exchange data is grid square information that is already included in the FT8 protocol, but trying to adapt FT8 for other contests seems a bit like a courier service trying to adapt a race car to deliver small packages - no doubt it can be done with enough ingenuity, but why?

Bob,

The cause of the error is  that access to C:\Program Files (x86)\N1MM Logger+.old\LogError.txt is denied.

This is not a N1MM Logger+ issue.

I renamed.  It went further with “A runtime error occurred during error processing” .  That message is below, but I think may get stripped out.

Running the Full Installer, boot, Run Updater worked on 2nd try.    First time it hung trying to go to a non-existent file server (that was my clue).  I told it c:\N1MM Logger+ instead.    It created it, but it’s still empty.   It did find my old databases in the Docs folder.   While running installer it was trying to go to a non-existent file server which I rebuilt under a new name months ago.  \\FS2\Docs versus \\FS1\Docs.    Windows document folder is redirected there.  Changing File Server name probably was the root cause.  Rather than go to the docs folder, it insisted to going to the location of the old docs folder.  Had it simply looked at whatever Docs was pointing at it would have worked.  Not sure if that is a Windows issue or N1MM, but it’s a minor issue now that I know about it.

Thanks for your help.

Bob,

I would rename the user N1MM Logger+ directory and start the program. The default location of the directory is MyDocuments. If the program starts your database file(s) are corrupt.

If it doesn’t start, the installation is damaged, likely from a computer scan or hardware issue. Rerun the Full Installer. There is no need to un-install. If the installer tells you to reboot, then restart the computer. Install the latest update before starting the program for the first time.

Make sure the database directory is located on the computer physical disk drive (not on a network share, cloud, USB disk, etc).

Some computer virus/security programs are known to damage the installation.

Never allow shadow backup of the database directory files when the program is running.

FT8 and FD

John N2HMM

This past Friday I went to a presentation by Joe Taylor K1JT the principle software designer of FT8, JT65, WSPR etc.  It was very interesting stuff.

But he specifically mentioned that FT8 is not designed for a contests like Field Day and should not be used for FD.  The ARRL agrees with this viewpoint (I called to ask their opinion).

At the moment they are working on a Beta version called "FT8 DXpedition Mode" but it's not ready for full release.  After it is released (they've had three trial tests already) a "FT8 Contest Mode" will be developed.  There will be a 2 to 3dB penalty in sensitivity since they'll have to accommodate a longer string of characters (wider bandwidth).  A small price to pay during a solar minimum.  So maybe next year.

As Tom says, there are two types of drivers from Silicon Labs.  The ones that Icom use and the ones that are designated as Windows Universal Drivers.  These report that the maximum baud rate is 23800 which is incorrect.  It seems that any of the icom drivers are fine. If you open the device manager and look at the driver in use for the Silicon labs devices, if it reports version 10.xx .  That is the bad driver.  Uninstall it, and make sure you click the checkbox "Delete drivers" otherwise Windows might reinstall the same version 10 drivers since it thinks it is more recent.  This seems to only effect software written using .NET

Re: QSO Recorder

Vytenis LY5T

I know minimum 2 reasons why QSOrder might be better than Audacity:
1. Search for particular time or QSO in Audacity record is difficult or not possible.
2. you may want to upload/share audio records to http://qsorder.hamradiomap.com/ after the contest. You will not be able to do it with Audacity records.

I still dream of a day when QSOrder will be integrated into N1MM natively.

John,

I could check NTFS perms, but it’s a moot point because It’s working.  However, it seems odd that I renamed it to .old to make it “not found”,  yet N1MM+ it realized the name was changed and tried anyway.  I did look at NTFS perms for both the .old version and the newly installed version.  At first glance they look the same.  To be sure, I’d have to create a document as Windows does not give me a way to create a list of perms for both old and new install.  There are tens, if not hundreds of setting to remember.   If I had such a list I could compare in detail.  I don’t want to build that list as its now working.

I believe the root cause is moving my docs from \\FS1 to \\FS2, yet something insisted on going to \\FS1 and that server is “gone”.  It probably retried X number of times, and eventually just gave up and exited the program.  I need to remember to not do that.

I probably could have just done the uninstall / reinstall on my own without posting to list, yes I know the uninstall is not needed.  Sorry to bother you.

Anyway, its working, thanks for the help.

Bob

Re: Use of USB ports

Dennis,

I had a fair amount of interference problems using n1mm+ and my normal setup with a Winkeyer.  K1ERL advised me to run Winkeyer direct to the PC rather than through a USB hub.  I did as he suggested and the problem is mostly corrected.  I have been using the USB hub for connecting the wireless mouse and keyboard with not much problem.  Sometimes a mistuned xcvr will cause some problems but usually nil if tuned correctly.

Subject: [N1MMLoggerPlus] Use of USB ports

I will be part of a small DXpedition to HQ9X for the WPX CW contest.  Since the laptop I'm bringing has only two working USB ports and I do have a powered USB port extender, what's the best way to set up the ports?

I have to connect:
USB radio cable (for an IC7610- audio codec also used)
USB cable for Winkey
USB port for wireless mouse

Since I only have two working USB ports, the USB port extender will require the use of one of the USB ports.  Obtaining a new laptop is not an option.

What should be plugged directly into the radio, and what should be plugged into the USB hub?  Does it make a difference?

Further to the above, the same thing happens with the Silicon Labs drivers for Yaesu radios.  They cannot connect over 19200 baud.
Do not use the version 10 drivers.

MORTTY Working

Got one of my MORTTYs working. Seems to work fine.. I have not tried it on the air yet.

So.... Do I simply put the transmit command [ into the macro? Then put the receive command in at the end ] ?

There is little info out there on actually USING the Tiny FSK. As lease by using an internet search engine.... No into on the N1MM help either that specifically addresses the Tiny FSK that I could fine.

Anyone have any links?

Thanks

Perfect! Thanks!

Wonder why a Google search on N1MM and Tiny FSK didn’t bring this up...

Looks like I need to make a couple of tweaks... But I had it mostly right.

Re: QSO Recorder

Peter Krüger

45 seconds is a good length - do it not too short as sometimes not everything is "heard" - e.g. you need too long for logging the QSO and then the QSO is not in the MP3 File.

Audacity Recording is really not the best for recording in this area.
Sometime I use "No.23" recorder - which is really simple to use.

I am waiting for the GUI version with PyQT support :) or QSorder

Bob,

It also looks like you renamed the wrong directory. Two self-inflicted errors.

>…..I would rename the user N1MM Logger+ directory and start the program. The default location of the directory is MyDocuments.

Un-install does not remove all files (for good reason). Often a user will un-install, re-install and have the same issue. This is why I suggested that you remove the user N1MM Logger+ directory.

Bob,

The cause of the error is  that access to C:\Program Files (x86)\N1MM Logger+.old\LogError.txt is denied.

This is not a N1MM Logger+ issue.

John,

No.  It was first installed 2-3 years ago.   Windows 10 has been upgraded several times via the forced updates.  It is now at 1709, Build 16299.431 .

I’m getting ready for June VHF.  N1MM fails to start.  No error message on screen.  I extracted this from Windows Application log.  I was thinking about uninstall / reinstall but perhaps there is a better way?
