What are you using for PTT in CW?

I Love the WinKeyerUSB for operating CW, BUT.... an added bonus is the PTT output from the Keyer controls ALL Modes.

Peter,

Define the radio control and CW with one COM port line not two. Check CW/Other for this line.

In the radio’s config menu you have to assign CW to DTR or RTS.

If you configure the radio for CW=DTR, set the Logger+ DTR dropdown to CW.

I will send you a snapshot via direct email.

Just installed the KI03B USB interface in the K3. Radio talks to the PC all ok with freq.display but cannot get the PC to send CW when using N1MM+. In N1MM have selected com 12 in second row (same com used for Elecraft K3 freq display in first row of port configure), have checked "cw" box, set DTR=CW and RTS=PTT, nothing else checked.

For the K3 have set for USB mode, vox is on, in config where PTT-KEY is displayed there are 7 choices available starting with off-off, which one do I select ??, I think I have tried every combo but w/o any success so far. Is there something else I need to activate ?? Tnx, Peter,NO2R/HS0ZKX

External Monitors and RFI

Jim Brown

I've seen several posts here about the virtues and weaknesses of various external monitors. One VERY important thing I don't see mentioned is the RFI that some of these monitors generate. There are three potential sources -- 1) the switch-mode power supply for the monitor, 2) the computer, and 3) the monitor.

A few years ago, I discovered that Costco was selling 23-24 in Samsung monitors that run on a nominal 14VDC. I bought several, and found that they run just fine on 12VDC from whatever power supply you have laying around as long as the current rating is sufficient. This takes a major noise source out of the equation. In my station, the monitors run on the station's 12VDC bus. In my living room and in my wife's office, monitors run on a 12V battery that is float-charged by a 12V 1A linear wall wart.

Noise from the computer and/or monitor is radiated by cables connected to those boxes. I use multi-turn ferrite chokes on the video cable between monitor and computer and on the power cables for both units. For VHF contests, where antennas are on a mast just above our operating position in W6GJB's contesting trailer, we also use 2-turn (for 6M) and single turn (for 2M) on those cables.

Most of the 14VDC Samsung monitors have been reasonably quiet (but not quiet enough to not require chokes), but one older model with "touch" controls was truly awful. Not only was the noise awful, but the touch control system went nuts in the presence of RF.

It's gotten harder to find monitors that run on 14VDC, and there are only a few of the smaller Samsung models that do. I just bought a 24-in Samsung S24E310HL to replace one that died. Max res is 1920 x 1080 pixels. Newer, larger models run on higher DC voltages.

Re: N1MM+ Icom Spectrum Display

Tom - N1MM

I spoke with all the vendors I could find at Dayton and got them to understand the problem we are trying to solve. All agreed to look into it, we will have to see how many can make it happen.

An email will be going out this week to the seven vendors from Dayton plus the LP-Pan vendor this week. Please send me any other vendors that should receive the information.

There was some interest in support for CQ frequency "finding" by those I talked to at Dayton. I coded a prototype of that this morning and had it working on the AM broadcast band - a band that is always full. Making it find the lowest energy slot is the easy part. Deciding how long to monitor frequencies and the UI are the hard parts.

Top priority right now is getting some of the vendors on board.

Terry,

Internal cw is generated by the program. It toggles a com or lpt port pin to send cw.

What are you using to send cw? If it is a winkey, is it a genuine k1el winkey? Some winkey clones have been known to produce odd results.

Using mygrid macro shouldn't make a difference.

OK John,

I’ll try setting it up again. I could try {MYGRID} instead of IO75UU in case that makes a difference.

Please clarify, what’s “internal CW”? I presume that’s just using messages generated via the program, or am I missing something here?

Enrique-

Maybe check out the uploaded skins here on the files section of the N1MM
yahoo group. I think the closest one that somewhat matches the 7300 is
LY5T's version (LY5T_Blue_v2.skin)

Enrique,

After you start N1MM Logger you need to start the Spectrum Display. Click
on the Entrywindow menu “Window” then, down at the bottom, click on “Icom
Spectrum Display”.

Will be fixed in the next build. In the meantime don't close the
window
- minimize it.

I just pulled down your latest version which highlights static

I had an existing window that displayed on startup, so I closed it

opened a new window and turned on the preamp to trigger the static
indicator and saw this in the Message window:

Fred -

In centered mode, when you are tuned to a frequency that is not an
even
kHz, the Microsoft Chart control will put the scale at a full kHz
boundary. I manually draw the blue dotted line, so that shows you the
actual spectrum that the radio is providing.

I'm hiding the Sig (db) to save screen real estate. The only real
issue
I can see is if you have changed the scale by using the mouse wheel
in
that area. In a contest, you aren't really worried about absolute
signal levels.

I don't position the callsigns, the Chart control does that. I also
expect it to get real crowded. I have some solutions in mind.

1. Take over the user's radio and roll the fixed display as you tune.
I.e. just like centered, but with discrete jumps rather than
continous
jumps. This would require the program to take over one of the edge
memories for each band you use it on.

2. Just zoom in. There will be fewer spots with the same space.

3. Additional filtration of some sort. Show only mults. Show only
spots
with highest s/n. Show only your continents spots (you can already do
this in the telnet filter tab).

Another way to save space with this control is to close your bandmap.
Ctl+up/down don't require the bandmap to work. They just require
spots
to be collected.

I'm glad you are enjoying it!

Hi Tom-

I did notice the inconsistency between navigating on the
spectrum and
the bandmap, however I recall in one of your earlier notes that you
were aware of the issue :)

I pulled down the latest version and the adjustable noise floor
lines
look great, however did notice something different from this
morning's
version.

If you're on a freq (say 14.030.0), the left side lines go all
the way
to the edge. If you move it anywhere between 14.030.1-14.030.9, the
further you go up, the more the noise floor line moves farther away
from the right, until you get to 14.031.0

I'm in Centered mode. I attached screenshots.

In the future once you guys work out some of the more pressing
issues/design items, I just have one thought.

I love the ability to hide the controls. This definitely will be
useful when I take m y 7300 out in the field on a small laptop for
INQP this weekend. It's maybe a matter of personal preference,
but I
like having the Sig [dB] shown. Some may not. It's no big deal.

I am struggling to articulate one potential tweak, but I suspect
that
it may just be that I'm not used to this new ability as of yet.
I do
notice that when the band is crowded, the callsigns at least in
Column
mode can get a bit confusing as to who is where. I imagine this
will
get thoroughly tested during WPX CW (unfortunately I won't be on
from
home to help). I see that you have made it so when calls are a bit
"crowded" there's a visual indication of where he is. I find in the
case of a super crowded band that I'll switch to Bar mode and
use it
that way. I like that flexibility.

I found a lot of value in this feature, especially in both CWT's.
Here's an excerpt from my 3830 for 1900Z... This tool hel ped
immensely.

"Was a combination of aggressive S&P and calling CQ. S&P with
the N1MM
IC-7300 Spectrum Monitor was simply amazing. My hands never left
the
keyboard except for when I found a spot to call CQ. It was
pretty cool
to just use the shift up/dn arrow keys to "find" signals that
hadn't
even been picked up by RBN yet and get them first call. If you
have a
7300 and use N1MM, you have to check it out."

OK John,

I’ll try setting it up again. I could try {MYGRID} instead of IO75UU in case that makes a difference.

Please clarify, what’s “internal CW”? I presume that’s just using messages generated via the program, or am I missing something here?

Cheers, thanks and 73,

Terry

wow !

esp if vendors embrace UDPing to N1MM+
making it usable for other rigs with N1MM+ would rock !!!
