Re: N1MM+ ESM Unexpected Return to RX

Robie,

This PTT issue is unique to the K3 radio. It gets confused when there is a radio command for PTT and the hardware PTT active at the same time.

When you press Enter in ESM mode, the program is attempting to play one of the voice messages below.  Remove all text after the comma of every line including the “-“ characters on some lines.

Also, in the radio com port setup window, uncheck “PTT via Radio Command SSB mode”.

All,

I used my Elecraft K3 in the NAQP SSB contest with N1MM+ set up for rig control, foot switch is set to NONE and ESM is enabled.  I use a foot switch directly connected to the K3 for PTT. I have not enabled any of N1MM+s voicing features.  I noticed that when I have the foot switch pressed and  hit the ENTER key my K3 immediately switched to the RX mode and displayed  ERR PTT.  I have checked my setup and am unable to correct a setting that corrects this issue. The work around I used during the contest was simply to hit the SPACE BAR to move to the next field and not enter the QSO into the log until I had release my foot switch.

My expectation is that N1MM+ would not switch the K3 to the RX mode with this setup. Are my expectations incorrect?  If so, what should I expect?

John,

Wouldn't it be simpler and easier to just turn off ESM? That way pressing Enter would not trigger any PTT events from the software, and the function keys would still be available for use.

I tried N1MM+ this past weekend in the 10 GHz and Up contest.

I've run in to a problem with the scoring. N1MM+ doesn't seem to score duplicate calls after my station has moved over 16km as per the rules.

I worked VE2UG from one spot, then moved 24 km. I reset my station info "grid" and worked Rene again, but scoring shows 0 points....

It did recognize VE2UG as not being a unique call so no 100 points.

Is changing "station info" the correct place to tell N1MM+ that I have moved? Headings all looked good after the grid change....

Changing the main station location does not do what you want. You should be setting the station category as "Rover" and using the ROVERQTH feature. See <https://n1mmwp.hamdocs.com/manual-supported/contests-setup/#arrl-10ghz-and-up>.

In my experience, most sellers of USB to serial converters with FTDI chips mention that on the box and in their advertising.  In 20-some years with N1MM, starting back when USB ports were rare, I don't recall ever seeing a complaint about an FTDI converter not working.

They will usually work with the original driver supplied on the unmarked mini CD, but if you ever lose it you are SOL as it’s rare to find a replacement with a Google search. O/S upgrades are an issue as well, since the upgrade can’t tell it’s a counterfeit chip and will install a Prolific supplied driver which Prolific (IIRC) deliberately disables when it finds its being used with a counterfeit. I don’t blame them.

Jim,

Thanks for your ideas. I sent an email to Mark KJ6ZWL describing the problem and asking which cable he recommends. I have a spare Valley Enterprises cable but when I connect it Windows changes the COM port. Not sure what to do. When I put the original cable back it switches it back to COM 3 which is what N1MM+ is on. The only other idea I have is to send the rig to a tech (ICOM no longer supports the 756 Pro III). The jack maybe mechanically unsound or I’ve heard that transistors may be faulty. I’m willing to give Mark’s cable a try in any case.

I enjoyed reading your QRZ page. I always like hearing how folks discovered ham radio. Yours was a particularly good story!

WSJT-X

Prep for upcoming WW contest I've followed tutorial and everything on the receiving/decoding end works perfetly.  I'm seeing identical stations through N1MM+ that I see when WSJT-X is running by itself.

When I call stations the audio is so weak that transmitter output is only a few watts, even with gain sliders moved up to 100%

When not using N1MM+ the WSJT-X software gives full 100 watt output with sliders backed off to remove ALC action.  The WSJT-X.ini used without N1MM+ and the WSJT-X - ForEW1.ini are identical.

System is WIN10 64 bit   Both N1MM+ and WSJT-X work perfectly on their own.  Any idea why only the transmit audio level is severely attenuated when I enter either FT8 or FT4 in the N1MM+ call field?

In its entirety, it does not appear to be a real properly assigned callsign.
Just like when you work QRP guys and they send VE9ABC/QRP or you work a mobile in a QSO party and you hear K5KG/DAY.....the suffix is self-assigned.

I looked on QRZ and it would appear it EG1LWB was a Lighthouse operation.  Delete the /LH

Just my opinion.

I looked on QRZ and it would appear it EG1LWB was a Lighthouse operation.  Delete the /LH

Just my opinion.

N1MM Logger + / WSJT SO2R Setup problem

Bud Trench

I am attempting to setup N1MM Logger+ and WSJT v2.1.0 in a SO2R configuration.  I’ve made some progress but, now I’m stalled.  I’ve searched on this list for an answer to my issues but I’m seeing one.

I’ve been successful in making both the Radio 1 and Radio 2 sides work independently, i.e., I can start WSJT from either side and it comes up fully functional.  I get CAT control and a good Decode List.  However, when I attempt to bring up the second side, I get a runtime error message and no CAT control on the radio that I have just activated.

Radio 1 is a K3, Radio 2 is an IC7800.  I am activating them from the Load WSJT/JTDX option in the Entry Window pull down.

I’ve setup the Configurer and WSJT tabs per the instructions on the N1MM website, including the CAT Control Network Server and UDP server port number updates for Radio 2.

Any advice?

Re: N1MM+ ESM Unexpected Return to RX

Robie

John,

I do not have a hardware PTT connection between my computer and the K3.  With digital modes I use PTT via radio command.  That feature is not activated on SSB.

Thanks for the feedback.

1. I'll make the suggested changes to the Function key files and test later today

2. PTT via Radio Command SSB mode was not checked

I'll provide feedback on the results,

My expectation is that N1MM+ would not switch the K3 to the RX mode with this setup Are my expectations incorrect?  If so, what should I expect?

John,

Removing all text after the, in all Function key messages resolved the issue.

I do not use N1MM to do any voicing for contesting, so using ESM for SSB is not an issue.

Thanks for your feedback, i've learned a bit.

You need to use an older prolific driver...
Use Driver 3.2.0.0 or older.

The typical problem with these USB-Serial “cables” (it’s more than just a cable) is the chipset used. The most common manufacturer is Prolific and their chips are the most commonly counterfeited by the Chinese.

All best, Ed
