Re: Windows 1903 Update

One of the side effects of Microsoft Windows 10 updates that surprised me was losing the paths to pinned documents in both Word and Excel in Office 2019, the installed Office, not Office 365 which is partially in a cloud.  A brief search for a Microsoft knowledge base (KB) dialog lead to one that basically says it happens, look for the documents, open them and reset the pin paths.  I find this response indicative of inadequate testing and finding a means to avoid breaking these paths.

The commit charge (the amount of RAM Windows 10 consumes just to run) on my PC found using Task Manager is about 4 GB with nothing else running.  While replacing your spinning HD with an SSD is a good idea, you may find that with insufficient RAM, your PC will be paging from SSD to RAM and back making it sluggish.  You may not be able to add RAM to get to 8 GB to avoid paging.  It is sad that some of the Windows 10 PCs sold on TV shopping channels only have 4 GB RAM.

If you are shopping for a new PC or motherboard, chose one with M.2 technology for the SSD.  The SSD is packaged on a circuit board about the size of 3 match books side by side and plugs directly onto the motherboard.  M.2 is screaming fast because it uses multiple PCI Express lanes, while an SSD on a ribbon cable uses only one lane.  As an alternative to a bulky new desktop PC, consider an Intel NUC8 or one of its siblings.

We found, at work, that when we changed to SSD, we lost our Microsoft Office licences. We were unable to find a way to re-install Office onto a new disk. We ended up buying new licences.
Is there a way? Did we miss something?

Re: Windows 1903 Update

John, I have installed a couple of SSDs here in my shack PCs without losing any software or causing a need to reinstall including older versions of Microsoft Office products. The way I did it was to "Clone" the old hard drive to the new SSD first, then just remove the old hard drive physically and then put the new Cloned SSD back in its place. Search for SSD replacement on You Tube and you will find several videos. The product that I used to Clone the old to the new was Acronis. Other apps have this ability too.

Hope this helps - and 73, Rod/w7zrc

I have received a few comments off list... pretty thoughtful responses too!  I know my tell it how it is approach causes some to bristle. :)

Here is a good link from May that shows how to get to the Windows Control panel that you know and love: https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/access-control-panel-sound-settings-windows-10-1903/

One thing I have noticed is that when you pull up the new 'Open Sound Settings', you might need to make the window wide enough to see the link in the upper right hand corner to the good old tired and true sound control panel.

This "should" be the final update in this thread (assuming no other gremlins
materialise)....

The use of the "Low IF" option in the SDRPlay configurator appears to have
resolved the SDR stability issues. It was running for over 24hrs solid
during IOTA, I'de call that stable!

I would recommend that a note be put into the N1MM+ manual in the
Spectrum Window -> SDRPlay section to advise the use of "Low IF"
if users are experiencing stability problems.

Many thanks once again to all those who helped!

Re: YCCC SO2R+ box and Yaesu FT dx-3000

Jason Newton

OK I was finally able to find time to conduct further work on this and I *may* have made progress.

I disassembled my cable to make sure the solder connections were good etc.  In an effort to facilitate some testing I removed the ¼ CW key connector and used jumpers having alligator clips on the ends to connect the appropriate wires in the cable to the ¼ connector.   I wanted to rule out a polarity issue.

During testing I connected my DMM to the YCCC box pins 6 (CW key) and 1 (PTT/CW ground).  Using the continuity function I was able to witness a slow pulsing (via a bar graph on the DMM) for dahs and a faster pulsing of the bar graph for dits.    I think, great, I can confirm the YCCC box appears to be working.

So, using the jumpers, I connect YCCC pin 6 to the tip of the key jack and pin 1 to the sleeve (not ring).  Still no joy.  The DMM shows pulsing, the rig keys up but no CW is generated.

I unhook the DMM and test other things.  Then I decide to test one more time and I reconnect the DMM in parallel with the keying circuit.  But get this, I inadvertently connect the common lead of the DMM to pin 6 (CW key) and the other (red) lead to the ground.

And the damn thing works! I can use the paddle to generate CW, the speed pot works etc.

But if I unhook the DMM its back to no CW.

My electronics skill is slightly above neophyte so I can’t offer any ideas as to why this works.   I would venture a guess about a voltage drop?

So with the above arrangement the DMM connected in parallel in continuity test mode reads -2.01.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jason K8JT

Jason,

This is a very non-critical circuit, so you don't need to look for a giraffe of small resistances, etc.  It is much more likely that you have an intermittent somewhere in your cable or YCCC connector, and in connecting the DMM you bump something.  Double and triple check all connections.  Wiggle things.  Pull the 1/4 connector in and out a few times...those nickle plated ones are often dirty and don't make good contact.  When you find it, it is going to be simple.

Jason,

WIll a straight key plugged into the same spot on the FTDX3000 work?

Note:  Radio menus should be set for straight key use.  Set CW mode.  Any split turned off.  BK-IN button must be on - in Yaesu language, BK-IN means PTT for CW, not real Break-In.  There should not be much else to it.

Re: YCCC SO2R+ box and Yaesu FT dx-3000

Hi Drew,

Yes thanks for the insight.

I didn’t think the circuit to be complicated because a straight key is just a switch.  But after staring at this for awhile I start to question what I know, lol.

I had reached out to the YCCC in parallel with this group and look forward to the reply. Dennis W1UE has been great in assisting me on this. But because  I don’t expect anyone to have knowledge of all radios and their quirks I asked here as well.

I will make another cable with just the required CW circuits and see if that eliminates the issue.

I post a solution when I have it.

Thanks to everyone for the tips and suggestions!  This is part of why I enjoy this hobby.

I'm convinced the FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt ) around Windows updates will never go away, especially in Amateur Radio circles.  This update has been available for several months now:

(Starting June 6, 2019, the version 1903 is available to anyone who checks for updates.)"

So for those that pay attention to these things, the update has been available for 3 months.  And as you can see above it's now available, or shows up for those brave enough (yes that's a joke) to use Windows Update.  I have been running it without issues since April and despite the FUD around this every year it seems and incrementally with the smaller updates in between, everyone seems to sort out any issues they have and or tweak any changes that are made to devices.  Get over this... make a document for your devices and understand the O/S that you are running.

If Microsoft never pushed any updates then we could all bitch about that too, or if they didn't address security issues and push updates there would be more weeping and wailing and gnashing of the teeth and bitching.

And the year I last checked was 2019 and if you are still insisting on using a spinning mechanical hard drive when you can buy a 256 gb SSD these days for $35 on Amazon.  Plus there is free software to clone your dreict over to the new SSD.  If you insist on keeping the 'spinner' around for the next 10 years like some guys have with Windows XP,  then you get what you ask for in slow updates. :)  With an SSD, the updates are orders of magnitude faster to apply.

I say get over it... keep the :Windows updates "Up to-date" and use a little proactive smarts when it comes to some contest or big DX weekend when the adverbial sky will fall if EVIL Microsoft forces you to update your computer at the most evil and inopportune time.  Plus there is no use crying about changes to the interface... if MS hasn't provided an option to keep the interface for the sound settings the same (which they have), then get used to the new settings.  They are not going to change it back because a bunch of middle aged and old geezer Ham Radio cronies (I fall into this crowd) bitch about it on a groups.io forum. :)

Off my soap box... get over it and update and go get yourself an SSD. :)  Max NG7M

No, COM1 to COM99 is supported.

One of the Yaesu virtual COM ports does not support radio communications. I suspect that you selected that port. Make sure you increase the radio timeout timer for the port that you are using USB or COM port.

I am debugging FT101D code with some users. If you are PC savvy and want to help let me know.

WSJT-X Decode List SO2R

CJ Johnson - WT2P

Howdy-
Testing out the latest version 1.0.7870 with SO2R WSJT-X integration (v 2.1.0). Under config / configure ports, etc. in the new WSJT/JTDX Setup tab, I've enabled radio 1 to use UDP port 2237 and enabled radio 2 to use UDP port 2238 and I have the path for WSJT setup to point to my latest WSJT version with command line params of --rig-name=SliceA and --rig-name=SliceB accordingly.

WSJT instance SliceA, the port is set as 2237
WSJT instance SliceB, the port is set as 2238

I have 2 decode list windows up, DL1 and DL2. They are getting data from the respective WSJT instances. DL1 works when I click on a station calling CQ, it triggers WSJT to begin the tx sequence. However, when I click on a call of someone calling CQ on DL2, nothing happens on the second instance.
