SS has an interesting history.  It is said [by ARRL] to be the longest running contest in ham radio ... if you don't count the psuedo-contest called Field Day.  The original contest exchange, around 1930, involved composing and transmitting actual messages [dozen words or so].  This was the era when "relay" in ARRL actually meant something.  I don't know when it went to "Work Once - Any Band" but it's possibly the only contest where that's the case today.  "Work Mults Once" is very common, NAQP's are the major exception here, but practically all other contests are "Work Once Per Band, Mults Once."
