This afternoon’s Es

Fascinating Es openings. Initially at about 2:00pm just within Europe and low signal strengths on FT8.
At around 3:00pm signal strengths rose and a full blown opening ensued and it was obvious that the paths would support phone. I could then have sat and worked hundreds (or so it seemed) one after the other on SSB, as if it was 20m. Many European stations were running low power and dipoles. Signal reports were 5/9+20! I wanted to probe across the pond so swung the beam west and switched to FT8. Slowly, one by one the stations lit up on PSKreporter, first in western Canada and then progressively eastward over half an hour to Ohio. I only ‘worked’ WA1NLG in MA but it was a first for me. Also just shows that a PSKreporter response does not mean there’s and operator there too! It was then fascinating to watch the opening subside as the reflection points moved east. As we move to the solstice and the sun really cooks the E region, hopefully there will be more such Es openings. And the key omission? It was all on 6m! Next time I’ll read before sending. John On Tue, 7 Jun 2022 at 19:09, John Berry <john.berry@...> wrote: Fascinating Es openings. Initially at about 2:00pm just within Europe and low signal strengths on FT8. --
