Downland Radio Group (DRG) Railways On The Air (ROTA) at Horsted Keynes 24th & 25th September 2022

The Downland Radio Group will be operating a Special Event Station with the Callsign GB0BR at the Bluebell Railway Horsted Keynes on Saturday 24th September and possibly on Sunday 25th September depending on the weather.  The event last year in 2021 was cancelled due to the COVID restrictions so it will be good to get the event back on the air this year.

Operation will be on the HF bands using SSB mainly on 40m and 20m but depending on the propagation other bands such as 17m and 15m may be used as well.  Check out the DX Clusters looking for GB0BR.

We will be located at the top of the Car Park at the Bluebell Railway Horsted Keynes

Members of the Mid Sussex Amateur Radio Society (MSARS) are welcome to visit the Special Event Station. Bring chair, mug, food as required.

On behalf of Gavin Keegan G6DGK.

I did not participate due to it taking place nearly fully in darkness. Could be Dangerous parking up in country lanes to check signals.

Hi Chris,

Peter, Tony and Me G8KMP were the only one's taking part in this foxhunt.

In the beginning the signal was not heard on the first transmission from the car park.

We moved to the park area just around the corner and the signal improved slightly and Mervyn was only just heard so we knew it was from him and his friend.

The next over we were at Ansty and this signal was great 5/7.

Next position was at Clair Hall with 360 degree full signal, and all at 5/9 in all directions.

We ended up at Lindfield due to a couple of clues, but we could not find the fox.

At least we ended up at the correct pub!

I wonder if the interest from the Scouts and Guides was at all initiated because of Peters radio interview? (could be good feedback to the radio station and get the MSARS name aired again!)

Well done on the antenna upgrades to all involved.

Good Morning

This morning I checked into the 80m net

My callsign:-      G3WOR/R.  Operator CT1/G4UDU

So I was using the Worthing Radio Club Flex Radio located in the centre of Worthing remotely from Portugal

In fact VERY RURAL Portugal !  If you look at the map where the word Portugal is and go west to the coast - that is where we are at "Sao Pedro de Moel"

I managed about 15 minutes before the WiFi dropped out on my end - it has since recovered but took half an hour to do so !

Remote radio is great but you are at the mercy of an internet connection.

I will be on either 15m at lunchtime - remote or possibly direct and maybe next Sunday on 80m

Hello

On the list of October 1st there is a “Memory Walk” in Brighton

I will be there with my Granddaughter Lottie taking part and trying to raise money for the Alzheimers Society.

I will be extremely grateful for any sponsors to help with this charity - I have family members and friends that have issues now with memory loss and advancing dementia.

Our team name “Walk for Dough” came about with me teaching Lottie about bread making and now she is a contacts manager for major retailers in the food industry.

Many thanks for your help

Foxhunt Friday 16th September 2022

M0WVE Merv

Hi All,
My friend Keith and myself are the Foxes for next weeks Foxhunt next Friday 16th September.  We are looking forward to welcoming as many Fox-hunters that can muster on the day as this will be the last hunt of the season.

As it is late in the Fox-hunting season it will be dark during the hunt so make sure you have torches with you.  To make it a bit easier to spot the Foxes Lair in the dark we will have a yellow maritime beacon flashing an “A" in Morse code in a prominent position from 8.30pm

Please see below for timings and further details.

Good Luck

Merv
M0WVE

Foxhunt Information
Meet at Cypress Hall car park at 7.15pm where envelopes with the location of the pub will be handed out.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS
All the Hounds will be starting from Cyprus Hall Car Park.

Normally everybody meets there from approx 7.15pm.

Sealed envelopes will be passed out to those teams that take on the Foxes, inside will be the location of the Pub for those who give up!

The first transmission will be sent from the Foxes location at 7.30pm, we will be using 145.375Mhz +/- QRM, this will be 2 mins long and we will then be transmitting for 1 min every 15 mins after that at 7.45, 8.00 & 8.15 etc.

If nobody has found us by this point some general clues will be slipped out during the 1 minute chat so listen carefully or your drinking time in the pub may be short!

For those that are new to this you will need, ideally 2m handheld & small beam antenna, map (OS 198), pencil, ruler & compass for plotting signal direction.

Looking forward  to  John Berry’s talk on Sporadic E, I have chased the Es on VHF for ni on 40 years  after being introduced to it by John G3WZT . Living in an apartment block now I am restricted to indoor antennas and with a short boom  3 element duo band  for 6 & 4M fixed facing south east I still manage to get reasonable results working five continents each year on 6M  and three continents on 4M each year with this antenna setup. My ODX

withh the loft antenna =  JR1LZK in grid QM06FL at 9567 k. On 4M  my ODX with the loft antenna is 9K2YM in grid LL48EQ at 4711 k.

We are in the dying days of this years summer Es season tho we do get a few winter Es openings.

The great nephew of Anthony Appleton, who identified and named the E layer, lives here in my apartment block.

Check out my https://www.qrz.com/db/G0LFF to see some great Es QSL cards from over the years.
