Reflections on peer-coaching vs. mentoring #week2 Re 3 messages
#week2
Some of you were wondering during last week's meeting why I used the term 'peer-coaching' rather than mentoring or 'peer-mentoring' to describe what we were doing in pairs in break-out rooms, in other words engaging in a mentoring kind of conversation with one another. I said this was because mentoring involves someone with more experience engaging with someone who has less experience, so it's not an ideal term for a situation where two teachers can't be assumed to have different levels of experience - and, of course, we were hoping you would swap roles and 'mentor' one another. I came across the term peer-coaching for this kind of more equal relationship, and just found this too, so I do think it's quite an appropriate term for what we're doing (and will do in tomorrow's meeting too): "Peer coaching (also known as co-coaching) is a confidential process where two people, who are at a similar level, support each other to work through challenges they are facing. During a coaching session, peer coaches take turns to coach each other." https://creativeconomy.britishcouncil.org/projects/peer-coaching/#:~:text=Peer%20coaching%20(also%20known%20as,turns%20to%20coach%20each%20other. In an article on 'Enhancement mentoring' which I've uploaded to the 'Files' section (by Seden, Eli (Erzsebet / Elisabeth), Mariana and me), we discuss this use of the term 'peer-coaching' further. By the way, I'm thinking we need to agree to keep details of what we peer-coach about confidential within this platform, even if we have permission from one another to share with the group. I'm sure you can agree to that! best wishes Richard

Week 2 (2) - Reflect on a mentoring dialogue with a teacher 14 messages
#week2
The most important activity this week is to ... mentor a particular teacher / colleague to consider recent successes, difficulties and puzzles, to select a topic relating to their current teaching, and guide them to develop research questions for teacher-research. If you would prefer to interact with another member of EVO2022 - peer-coaching about your recent teaching – you can find a partner here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IvHbIysrmWyEafIMiOX1KDwgZ-RBY8V0Vc-kvuafknY/edit?usp=sharing [Ideally, record your conversation – with permission – and listen back to analyse and/or reflect on it]. Please share and critically reflect on your experience, from any point of view you like, here.

Week 3 (1): Meeting video and special offer
#week3
Today's meeting video is now available to view here: Part I (before break-out rooms): https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/DfmmtdD1M_JrDKGIPtobZxaP2QZytiOlBb0Havmh6esIqZQVtHWXnIJu2DEjSecu.uUICj5XHPtmz85HL?startTime=1642948517000 Part II (after break-out rooms); https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/DfmmtdD1M_JrDKGIPtobZxaP2QZytiOlBb0Havmh6esIqZQVtHWXnIJu2DEjSecu.uUICj5XHPtmz85HL?startTime=1642952680000 We had a very interesting conversation about many mentoring issues today - definitely worth watching (we think). The benefits of peer-coaching (for its own sake but also as a stepping-stone into mentoring teachers to do research) is emerging strongly, and we recommend you pair up with another participant to engage in this if you haven't done so already. You can still do so via the sign-up sheet here - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IvHbIysrmWyEafIMiOX1KDwgZ-RBY8V0Vc-kvuafknY/edit * LIMITED SPECIAL OFFER* - If you do not have a teacher in mind to mentor to do research, our friends Mariana and Ruben, who are leading the EVO on Classroom-based Research for Professional Development, are offering the opportunity for you to mentor one of the teachers taking their EVO over the coming two to three weeks. If you'd like to do this you will need to contact Mariana eIther TODAY or at the latest TOMORROW (Monday). Her email address is mariana serra2@... ( marianaserra2@... ) Best wishes Richard and Seden

Week 3 (3) Reading and discussion this week 2 messages
#week3
Apart from continuing to mentor a teacher or peer-coach with another participant, if you can, and reflect on the experience, the main activity this week is the following (see https://groups.io/g/Mentoring-TR/wiki/29017): Look back over Chapters 1 to 8 to consolidate work so far, and read Chapter 9 of Mentoring teachers to research their classrooms - then comment on or question anything you have read (and/or heard in online meetings 1 to 3), from any point of view you like, in response to this message. This is an opportunity to raise any questions that have arisen your mind relating to mentoring teacher-research.

Special extra meeting on Sunday - 'Mentees' and Mentors' Voices' 7 messages
With our 'sister' EVO - the one on 'Classroom-based research for professional development' run by Mariana Serra and Ruben Mazzei, we've agreed to hold a special joint session this Sunday (February 6th) at 12 midday (GMT). You will need to register in advance to attend this session. You will be asked two questions when registering - choose 'Mentoring workshop' and 'Mentor' for your options when asked Register here to be sent the meeting link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0lcOCspz4pEtzsGf9r4oC4_JQgDaoMllJ7 The deadline for registration is today, Saturday 5th February, 9pm GMT. This is so that we can arrange break-out rooms in advance. As a (learning) mentor, you will have a mentoring dialogue with Classoom-based reseach for PD EVO participants, who will explain to you their research plans (research topic, research questions, data collection plan and intended way of analysing the data). Your job will be to listen attentively, encourage and question - but not to judge or directly advise. We're sure you'll find this an interesting encounter and hope you can make it! best wishes Richard and Seden
