Ukiah sewer ponds today

Linda Malone

This morning at the sewer ponds Sheridan and I saw 6 avocets; 3 different pairs, each in a separate pond.  Nine stilts, the most we have seen so far. American gold finches, great-tailed grackles trying to impress the girls, and a large group of barn swallows down in the pond weeds feeding on some wonderful treat.  A lovely morning.

Greater White-fronted Geese, Lake Mendocino

Tim Bray

26 April 2021 - We stopped briefly at the Kyen Campground (closed, except the boat ramp) off Highway 20 at the north end of Lake Mendocino. Lots of birds, including some obliging Bullock's Orioles and about 400 Aechmophorus grebes. I was surprised to find two Greater White-fronted Geese hanging out with a small group of Canada Geese, between the boat ramp parking lot and the lake. Thought they would all be gone by now.

12 April 2021. Great-tailed Grackles - 7 at UWWTP

Dave Bengston

I know this is a continuing bird at the Ukiah Waste Water Treatment Plant. But today, Mike Curry and I saw at least 7 of them. There were two pairs and 3 single males. We saw them clearly more than once all at one time flying together. Part of the time we seemed to be surrounded by them, flying and squawking and squealing in every direction, and we thought there might be ten or eleven. Since it is a rare sighting, we left it a 7. So, count carefully the next time you see them.

I cannot say that I am thrilled by this sighting, even though it is rare. There are many birds I would much rather see in the county. The Red-winged Blackbirds did not seem too thrilled either.

Swainson's Hawk in Willits

Swainson's Hawk in Willits

While birding the skate park with me in Willits this morning, my daughter Alexandria spotted a Swainson's Hawk soaring high overhead.  Light adult type buteo with dark tale and head.  Dark leading wing edges on underside along with dark wing tips.  Mostly off-white elsewhere on the undersides.  No dark patagials discernible.  A couple of lousy distant pictures posted to ebird.  See list at: https://ebird.org/checklist/S84986974

Black-bellied Plover Ukiah WWTP 4/4

Chuck & Barbara Vaughn

Greetings Mendobirders- Of interest mostly to you inland birders was a
Black-bellied Plover this morning at the Ukiah Wastewater Treatment Plant.
It was a male in full breeding plumage, and was calling repeatedly from
the levee leading to the pumping station on the plastic-lined storage
ponds to the S of the main plant. It was still there at 920. Also out
there were the 2 continuing Black-necked Stilts and 2 Great-tailed
Grackles.

Black-necked Stilts Ukiah WWTP 3/28

Chuck & Barbara Vaughn

Greetings Mendobirders- Earlier this morning there were 3 Black-necked
Stilts at the Ukiah Wastewater Treatment Plant. They were moving around
between the sludge pond and the S oxidation pond. The adult male
Great-tailed Grackle that George Gibbs found on 3/20 has been joined by
another. Their duet was sublime.

Stay well, Chuck

Navarro River Goldeneyes

Roger Adamson

There was a Barrow's Goldeneye Reported earlier today from the Navarro
River estuary. I checked it this afternoon and found about 20 goldeneye
actively feeding near the big island about a quarter mile west of the
bridge. There were about 11 male and 9 female Common Goldeneye. I could
not find any Barrow's; of course I could have missed it.
