Reminder - EUMETCast Europe - transponder migration

Folks,

The clock is now ticking - with the final transmission of the old HVS-1 service planned for December 23. This year!

https://www.eumetsat.int/eumetcast-europe-service-transponder-migration

By the way, does anyone have experience of using the TBS6903 (or similar) in dual-tuner, single-cable operation mode to get BAS on one tuner and HVS-1 on the other? The idea being that the BAS continues working even if the signal has dropped below the HVS-1 threshold.

Cheers,
David

Hi David,

To avoid confusion the above top line should read HVS-2.

Despite adjustment I still find when I run HVS-2 (C3) on another receiver it drops my Basic Service by about 0.5 db SNR. Adjusting the LNB makes no difference. My cable from the LNB is a twin which may be the issue.

I need all the signal I can get so the simple solution is to stay clear of HVS-2.

Regards,
Douglas.

Hi David,

I have been using a TBS6983 in dual-tuner, single-cable operation mode to get BAS/HVS-1 on Tuner A and HVS-2 on Tuner B for several years by use of a passive splitter. I use the single TBS-IP tool for Tuner A and BDADataEx for Tuner B as I find that this gives me the most reliable reception. It also avoids the problem of setting up a dual tuner configuration for either tool. When transponder C3 stops operation, I will lose HVS-2 and have no plans to add another cable as the Sentinel full resolution is no longer available on HVS-2. I can obtain this from the EUMETSAT Data Store if I need it. I am assuming that HVS-2 will continue to be dedicated to Sentinel data.

Fortunately, the future HVS-3 transponder uses the same quadrant as the current C4 transponder (low-band, horizontal polarisation) so dual channel operation should then be possible again. Unfortunately, Tuner A of my TBS6983 has become intermittent in operation so I have switched to Tuner B for BAS/HVS-1 operation. I'll probably need to replace the card at some point.

As an experiment, I have switched between vertical and horizontal polarisation to receive the new C3 transponder and found that the C3 transponder was about 0.2dB lower in S/N than transponder C4 The LNB had been previously aligned for best S/N on transponder C4 (BAS/HVS-1).

Regards,

Richard

Sorry - should read when transponder C10 stops operation.

Hi all,

I observe missed and recovered packets on the new HVS-2 transponder.
When I tune back to the old transponder missed and recovered packets are gone.
Do anyone else see the missed and recovered packets?

Good idea about the future WK4 transponder!

I regularly check the C3/C4 difference and now see quite a variation (likely local effects) averaging around 0.7 dB:

I've seen this sort of thing in the past with the TBS6903, fixed only by using a particular TBS Windows driver, using BDADataEx and not the TBS software, having HVS-2 on the correct tuner of the pair, and making a bow ro the moon every second Thursday of the month. It feels like that, anyway. Strictly "if it works, leave it!".

I reported issues to EUMETSAT last week where TelliCast would only work for a short while before stopping, they made a change (but I never found out exactly what), so I suggest you report your issues. Note from my Europe0wide plots that others also have a steady stream of missed and recovered TelliCast packets even on BAS and HVS-1:

I did notice your change this morning and guess you had switched.

Cheers,
David
