TimeStep HRPT Dongle

Spence M0STO

Dear Group,
firstly this is my first post and hope to learn a great deal from this forum and also supply information that may be useful to others. I’m generally a radio ham interested in Satellite communication and HF. I also dabble in APT satellite, LEO and now progressing onward to HRPT.

I have started to build up a TimeStep HRPT receiving stations and wondered if anyone has a HRPT dongle for sale? I appreciate that some may wish to offer advice on SDR based receivers, however I would really like to get the time step equipment up and running.

Any help appreciated and hopefully get this wonderful equipment back operating again.

Many thanks, kind regards,

Hi, de Spence M0STO.

You can find info about a self-to-build decoder on my website:

http://www.alblas.demon.nl/wsat/hardware/hardware2.html

This decoder can handle HRPT and also Meteor_AHRPT. And if you can make a QPSK-receiver it can also handle METOP and Fengyun 3A-C.

For X-band it can also handle Aqua/Terra and NOAA20, but these are not tested yet on real data.

The decoder is realized in a FPGA. Not sure if the module I used is still available ("GODIL" at https://wiki.trenz-electronic.de), but since the decoder is written in VHDL it can be synthesized in other FPGA's too. And if it's just for HRPT/MHRPT, possibly even in a CPLD.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Rob.

Hi Rob,
That’s an absolutely awesome project and I had looked over it previously, however, I think I read somewhere that it was no longer supported!? Perhaps I need to read over again.?

I know the Xilinx Spartan group of FPGA’s are still available or Perhaps and Altera or Lattice Dev board but before I go on I will re’read your article a little more thoroughly first.

Thank you ever so much for the information and the link and will go ahead and gather up a preliminary to determine what’s parts are available off the shelf.

All the very best and shall keep you posted of my findings. The information is of course first class and appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Hi, De Spence M0STO

I did design a HRPT decoder in the 90's, with Xillinc 3042 FPGA's. That is not supported anymore because I don't have access to the synthesis software for these devices. Apart from that, I wouldn't even like to use these very old FPGA's anymore, a HRPT generator just fits. With the newer design (also already 12 years old...) all mentioned decoders and generators feed together, so that's much better. And I can still adapt this decoder; NOAA20 was recently added.

I am afraid the GODIL modules are not available anymore, but if you are able to handle other FPGA's that shouldn't be a problem. Advantage of GODIL is that the module has DIL-spaced pins (GODIL stands for Good Old DIL), so even for me easy to handle ;-)

I have recently played with CPLD's (simple EPM240), adding bitgenerators for several X-band sats and I think a HRPT/MHRPT decoder would fit.

Anyway, let me know which direction you want to go.

Cheers,
Rob.
