Hello Douglas

Many thanks for your assistance. I have already checked with Eumaetsat that
I am registered for the 1 huorly service. See below.

Regards.............Geoffrey

OK many thanks Geoffrey. I have tried to follow back all the mails in this
thread to see what has been recommended.
I don't see any reference to checking the setting in MSG DM for Hourly FSD.
So just to be sure. In MSG DM select 'Setup', then 'Channel Selection' then
'FSD' and make sure that the 'Hourly FSD' box is ticked at the bottom.
My apologies if that is already done but I don't see any mails asking you
to check it.

Regards
Douglas.

Re: FSD Hourly

Geoffrey, the first two items listed in your recv-channels.ini have a small "d" in the word data and I suspect that you will therefore not be getting any data from channel one and four.

The word Data should have a capital "D" as shown in your channel 2 and 3. If you amend this I suspect that you will start to receive the hourly FSD.

Hope that helps.

Regards
Ian.

Hi all,
Ian, I had always understood that filenames in Windows and DOS were case insensitive, so your explanation might not be correct.

I offer an alternative with a question. MSG DM only has one box for the location of received files. Usually it points to the \T-Systems\Business TV-IP\received folder, but if you have followed David's advice and used separate received filenames for the four channels, how do you tell the Manager of the four filenames? In my system, I used \received for Channels 1, 2 and 3, and when I wanted to get Channel 4, I followed the then current advice and called it\received\Channel 4. But I cannot find anywhere where I have pointed the MSG DM to this folder. I have used separate received folders for the METOP, AHVRR and RSS channels as the data for these is handled by separate programs with separate Setup boxes. I am successfully receiving the 1 hour data so somehow it is finding its way into MSG DM!

Best regards - Alan S

Today I got a question from a Eumetcast user "suffering" from yellow
T. The cause: The wind did blow his disc to SKY at 13 east. Etoken can
not change the colour of your T, but the wind can...
Rob,
your guess - or advice - was right. I have this monstrous toroidal mirror on
the balcony, exposed to our favourite strong wind side of the house. It is
mounted on two very massive concrete slabs, each weighing more than
hundred kilogramms, and they surely did not move a millimeter despite the
~60 knots of SW wind we had in some gusts here.

The signal appeared and disappeared in a tidal time pattern over two days -
characteristic for a just slight displacement from the desired direction. Now it
was clear, the air had been to fast.

The mirror is mounted on a sort of tripod, with a massive foreleg and some
less convincingly looking hind-legs. These are connected with bolts, also
bolted to the concrete slabs. Well, nothing had really moved from its place,
but when I pushed the mirror moderately from NE, against the direction from
where the wind had worked, the whole setup jumped back a centimeter or
two at its outer diameter, like if some tension in the tripod had been
released. Now, it sits in a stable position again, but I will alter the column on
which it sits to a massive pole(stainless steel tube), welded to a plate that
will be bolted to the concrete slabs, and stabilized with some angles
minimizing any lateral motion.

I'll have to think again about installing this utility to record the signal strength
over time. Adding another step of complexity kept me off so far, but ...

Thanks again, and stay tuned!

Cheers,
U.

David,
Your mail below came in about 30 seconds after I had sent mine! We must have been typing at the same time.
Your explanation certainly covers the situation I found. But I find this type of behaviour rather strange and illogical - how many steps up the directory tree is it logical that the pointer would work? Do METOP Mgr and AVHRR Mgr work in this way too or is the pointer for those specific? I can see that you NEED this behaviour for MSG DM where the pointer must include several sub directories (although I avoided this by putting all channels 1,2,&3 into one \received folder). I guess you can see that it wasn't 'documented well enough'! The problem now is that after 7 years of evolution of the Eumetcast system and the software, there is just so much documentation, each filled with 'gotcha's'. I read the MSG DM documentation twice before writing my post.

Alan,

Yes, I thought about simultaneous typing when I saw your comment!

The AVHRR Manager accepts:

\received
\received\Data Channel 1
\received\EUMETSAT_Data_Channel_1

in accordance with some early and the most recent EUMETSAT default naming conventions.

The Metop Manager requires separate directories (as some of the file names might otherwise be confused).

The amount of data has grown very substantially over the years in which EUMETCast has been in operation, and what we could get away with in the early days is no longer recommended, or included in a default EUMETCast installation. Keeping up with the data streams is enough, keeping up with the documentation much more difficult!

Cheers,
David

Re: FSD Hourly

Ian Deans

Geoffrey,

You will have seen a few mails discussing the recv-channel.ini settings with regard to use of capitals and I apologise if it has caused a little confusion.

You have four entries showing in your recv-channels.ini. and your first two for channels 1 and 4 have an error on the first line. [EUMETSAT DATA Channel 1] should be [EUMETSAT Data Channel 1] and the same applies for the Channel 4 setting. If the word "DATA" is all capitals you will not receive data.

Your first two entries should be exactly the same as your last two for channels 2 and 3 except of course for the channel numbers.

Hope that helps.

Regards
Ian.

Hi All,
I only use Eumetcast at weekends to save energy (and my electric bill) but on boot up instead of saying "Media Broadcast" it says "GCP/EB9=XP61" which I googled and found it's temporary free to air channels. What I don't understand is why it's coming up on the same sat and frequencies as Eumetcast. Any feedback appreciated, especially if you know how to stop this happening.
Thanks

Hi Rob - looks like your tuner on the sky card has drifted - GCP/EB9=XP61 is marked as transmitting on 11938 whereas the channel you want for MEDIA BROADCAST is 11977

Need to re-tune a little I think,

Good news Rob,

If you can find out which way it is slowly drifting - you could insert a small change as per David Taylor's suggestion under his trouble-shooting page. To quote:

'Use an offset frequency (several MHz higher or lower) to correct for LNB oscillator offsets'
